Your Windows Recycle Bin Has a Size Limit—and It Can Differ by Drive

Windows gives each drive its own configurable Recycle Bin size limit. Find the setting, change a selected drive’s cap, and distinguish capacity from automatic cleanup.

Windows sets a maximum size for Recycle Bin contents on each drive separately. To check or change it, open Recycle Bin Properties, select a drive, and review that drive’s size setting. The number is a cap for that drive’s deleted files—not a shared allowance for the whole PC.

Why the Recycle Bin limit differs by drive

Recycle Bin capacity is configurable by volume. Windows’ policy documentation describes the setting as the percentage of a volume’s space available for deleted files and says the control applies to all volumes. In the consumer interface, you select a drive and set its maximum size, so two drives can have different limits. Microsoft’s RecycleBinSize policy documentation describes the policy-level control; Windows Central’s Windows 10 and 11 guide shows the consumer dialog.

The selected drive’s limit is the maximum space its Recycle Bin contents may use. It is not the drive’s total free space, nor one pool shared by all drives. There is no universal default percentage established for every Windows version, build, or device, so check the setting on your own system rather than assuming a particular default.

How to check or change the limit for a drive

  1. Open the Recycle Bin from the desktop and choose Properties.
  2. In the list of available locations, select the drive you want to configure. Confirm the selected drive before making a change.
  3. Review its current maximum. To set a different cap, choose Custom size, enter the maximum size in MB, and apply the change.
  4. Repeat for each drive you want to configure. The setting you change applies to the selected location, not automatically to every drive.

Names and available options can vary by Windows build and drive type. If the dialog on your PC looks different, rely on the selected location and its displayed size rather than assuming the setting applies to another drive.

Capacity and automatic cleanup are different settings

The size limit controls how much Recycle Bin content may be kept for a drive. Storage Sense addresses a different question: how long eligible files remain before Windows cleans them up. In Storage Sense, look for Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over and choose the age threshold you want. Microsoft says that with default settings, Storage Sense runs when the device is low on disk space, and Recycle Bin items are deleted after a period of time. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide explains the setting.

Storage Sense works on the system drive. For other drives, Microsoft directs users to advanced storage settings; the available controls may depend on the Windows version and configuration.

Some deletions never enter the Recycle Bin

A larger capacity limit cannot protect every deleted file. Microsoft says deletions from non-local resources, such as a network computer, bypass the Recycle Bin. Using Shift+Delete also bypasses it, so those files cannot be restored through the bin. See Microsoft’s guidance on bypassing the Recycle Bin.

Freeing space and what to do after deletion

To remove items already in the Recycle Bin and free their space, empty the bin. Microsoft also suggests other general storage-management options, such as moving large files to external storage, in its Windows drive-space guide.
