Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →After launch, the riskiest failures may be invisible: a user can reach another user’s data, a secret is exposed in a client bundle, or an unreviewed change alters production behavior. A working interface is not proof that the app’s permissions, data handling, configuration, and release process are safe. Start by checking those boundaries, then set up repeatable maintenance and review.
What tends to break after launch?
The app’s visible screens are only one part of the system. A user can see the right page while a server route or database policy still allows access they should not have. Likewise, a successful demo does not establish that production credentials, error handling, dependencies, or deployment controls are configured safely.

- Identity and data boundaries: Authentication establishes who a user is; authorization determines what that user may do. Check both at server routes and in the data layer, not only in the interface.
- Input and unfinished logic: Unvalidated input can reach databases, file handlers, shell commands, templates, or external services. Mock responses, permissive fallbacks, debug routes, and placeholders also deserve review; their presence alone does not prove they are exploitable.
- Secrets and configuration: Credentials can be exposed in source, repository history, build output, client bundles, logs, or deployment settings. Default accounts, excessive permissions, unused services, and detailed error messages can also create avoidable risk.
- Dependencies and release path: Outdated or vulnerable packages are only part of the picture. Build tools, CI/CD actions, registries, deployment credentials, and the artifact that actually runs in production all need attention.
- Maintainability: If no one on the team can explain the critical routes, data model, and deployment path, routine changes become harder to review safely.
These are software-security and maintenance concerns, not proof that every AI-built app is defective. OWASP’s guidance on security misconfiguration and software supply-chain failures applies to applications generally.
How much should you read into the reported vulnerability rate?
A June 2026 arXiv preprint, “Understanding the (In)Security of Vibe-Coded Applications,” analyzed a corpus of 9,041 open-source vibe-coded applications and sampled 200 deployed public applications. The authors identified 1,186 vulnerabilities in that sample: 91.0% of the sampled applications had at least one vulnerability, and 65.77% of the identified findings were rated Critical or High. The latter figure describes vulnerability findings, not the share of apps rated Critical or High. Read the paper and its methodology.

Those results are specific to the study’s sample and method; they are not a prevalence estimate for all apps built with AI, including private or commercial apps. The authors identify patterns including placeholder logic, unfiltered input, broken access control, authentication failures, and exposed secrets. Their abstract also cautions that stronger models and improved prompting can reduce vulnerabilities but do not eliminate the underlying risks. Treat the findings as a reason to inspect your own app, not as a diagnosis of it.
What should you inspect first?
Authentication, authorization, and records
- List the routes and database operations that read or change user data; confirm each makes the correct authentication and authorization decision.
- Test whether one account can view or change another account’s records by altering identifiers in requests. Check tenant separation, admin-only actions, and public endpoints that return private information.
- Review database policies and server-side checks. Hiding a control in the UI is not an authorization check.
Inputs, placeholders, and fallback behavior
- Trace user-controlled values into queries, commands, uploaded-file handling, templates, and outbound requests. Confirm the app validates and handles them appropriately for each destination.
- Search for mock responses, unfinished placeholder logic, permissive fallback paths, and debug routes. Verify whether each is reachable in production and what it can access or change.
Credentials and production settings
- Check source code, repository history, build output, client-side bundles, logs, environment settings, and deployment configuration for credentials that should remain private.
- If a credential may have been exposed, rotate it rather than merely deleting the visible copy. Replace embedded static secrets with protected configuration and narrowly scoped or short-lived credentials where practical.
- Remove default accounts and unnecessary services, limit cloud permissions, avoid showing detailed stack traces to users, and configure security headers. OWASP’s misconfiguration guidance covers these kinds of controls.
Dependencies and the production artifact
- Inventory direct and transitive dependencies, including build tools, and identify unsupported or vulnerable components. Track advisories and update with compatibility checks.
- Know which source, build process, and artifact produce the deployed app. Restrict access to repositories, registries, CI/CD, and deployment credentials.
- Where feasible, generate a software bill of materials (SBOM), use trusted sources, remove unnecessary dependencies, and stage risky releases. OWASP’s supply-chain guidance recommends human oversight of production promotion rather than letting one person write and promote code without review.
What is a practical post-launch review sequence?
- Map what is running. Record domains, data stores, external integrations, environments, deployment pipeline, and who can access each.
- Prioritize consequential paths. Review sign-in, account recovery, tenant separation, admin actions, payment or sensitive-data flows, and inputs that reach databases or external systems.
- Contain credible credential exposure. Rotate affected credentials, move secrets into protected configuration, and narrow their permissions.
- Harden production environments. Separate environment credentials, remove unused services and defaults, and verify permissions and error handling.
- Inventory and monitor dependencies. Include transitive packages, track advisories, and apply updates with compatibility checks.
- Protect production promotion. Require another human to review production changes, protect repository and pipeline access, scope deployment credentials, and stage changes when appropriate.
- Repeat checks during development and release. OWASP’s DevSecOps Guideline describes checks such as secret scanning, software-composition analysis, static analysis, infrastructure-as-code scanning, API and dynamic testing, supply-chain controls, and security gates. Choose checks that fit your app and team; the guideline is a menu, not a mandate to adopt every tool.
- Assign ongoing ownership. Name a person responsible for vulnerability alerts, dependency updates, configuration drift, and incident decisions, and set a review cadence that fits the app’s risk and release activity.
Can a scanner tell you the app is safe?
No single scan establishes that an application is secure. Different checks cover different surfaces: code analysis can flag suspicious patterns, dependency checks can identify known vulnerable packages, and dynamic or API tests can exercise behavior in a running system. None replaces testing whether authorization matches the app’s actual users and data model, or verifying that the deployed artifact and environment are the intended ones.

Do you need to rewrite the app?
Not automatically. A 2025 experience report discusses possible technical-debt costs of rapid AI-assisted development, including architectural inconsistency and extra maintenance, but it does not establish a universal point at which an app should be rewritten. Read the report.

Make the decision based on whether the team can understand and safely change the current system. Consider whether its data model and trust boundaries are clear, whether critical paths can be tested, and whether production changes can be reviewed and rolled back through a controlled process. If problems are isolated and understandable, targeted fixes may be more appropriate than a rewrite. If the team cannot reliably explain or control high-consequence paths, get an experienced engineer to assess them before adding more users or sensitive workflows. For apps handling personal data, payments, or similarly consequential operations, a human-reviewed security assessment or penetration test may be a sensible next step.
