A Kubernetes Pod can pass its health checks and still serve stale, incomplete, or invalid data. Startup, readiness, and liveness probes answer specific operational questions about initialization, traffic eligibility, and recovery; they do not certify that business data is fresh or correct. Treat data health as a separate signal, and connect each failure to an action that makes sense for that failure.
What Kubernetes health checks do—and do not—tell you
Kubernetes distinguishes three probe purposes. A startup probe gates other probes while an application initializes. A readiness probe determines whether a Pod should receive service traffic. A liveness probe can cause the container to be restarted. These consequences are different, so the probes should not be treated as interchangeable (Kubernetes documentation).

None of those probe purposes defines domain-specific data quality. A process may respond successfully while its dataset is stale, only partly synchronized, missing required records, or inconsistent across replicas. Those are examples of conditions the application may need to detect; Kubernetes does not automatically identify them.
Choose a signal based on the action a failure should trigger
Startup: has initialization finished?
Use a startup probe when initialization may take longer than the normal liveness or readiness thresholds allow. While a configured startup probe has not succeeded, Kubernetes waits to run liveness and readiness probes. This gives a slow-starting application time to initialize without an early liveness-triggered restart (Kubernetes documentation).

- 【DeskPi RackMate T1】It's made of aluminum alloy and acrylic frame mini chassis which you can setup your own cluster or home assistant server. For 10 inch 4U Server Cabinet (DeskPi RackMate T0), please refer to ASIN B0DPGZPTPP. For 10 inch 12U Server Cabinet (DeskPi RackMate T2), please refer to ASIN B0DT2XM22G.
- 【10-inch width】The cabinet has a width of 10 inches, which is a relatively small size that saves space while accommodating sufficient equipment. With dimensions of 11x7.8x16 inches, it is suitable for small offices, home environments, and large enterprises looking to save space.
- 【Open Design】The cabinet adopts an open design, allowing easy access to all devices inside. This design facilitates equipment installation and maintenance, aids in device cooling, and maintains optimal working conditions.
- 【8U Standard】The cabinet has a height of 8U, which is a standard unit size. With 1U equaling 1.75 inches, 8U implies a height of 14 inches.
- 【Translucent Design】Both sides are made of translucent acrylic, providing dust resistance and reduced weight. This design allows direct observation of the cabinet's interior, and users can add ambient lights for decoration.
Readiness: can this instance handle traffic now?
A failed readiness probe marks the Pod unready. Kubernetes continues running and probing it, but removes it from Service load balancers. Readiness is therefore the relevant signal when the intended action is to stop sending requests to an instance temporarily—not to restart it (Kubernetes documentation).
Decide deliberately whether a dependency problem means this particular replica cannot serve its requests. A shared database outage, for example, may affect every replica; withdrawing all of them may be appropriate in some systems but may also eliminate useful degraded service. Probe semantics establish the traffic consequence, not the right policy for every application.
Liveness: can a restart help this process recover?
Use liveness for a condition where restarting the container is a reasonable recovery action, such as an unrecoverable deadlock. A failed liveness probe can restart the container, so tying it to a broad remote-dependency check can turn a dependency outage into repeated restarts. Kubernetes documentation warns: “Incorrect implementation of liveness probes can lead to cascading failures” (Kubernetes documentation).

Measure data health separately
Model data health around the requirements of the operation that depends on the data. Depending on the service, useful signals may include freshness or replication lag, completeness checks, validation results, or synthetic checks of critical behavior. These are design choices, not built-in Kubernetes guarantees.
- Process progress: Is the process functioning, or is it stuck in a way a restart may resolve?
- Request-serving ability: Can this replica safely handle the requests it is likely to receive now?
- Data health: Is the required data recent, complete, and internally valid enough for the operation?
Expose data-health signals through application metrics, alerts, or other monitoring appropriate to the system. Do not automatically wire every data-quality alert to liveness: if an external database is down, restarting otherwise functioning containers may create a second failure mode.
What each probe mechanism actually checks
| Mechanism | Success condition | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
exec |
The command exits with status zero. | The configured command completed successfully; its meaning depends on what the command checks. |
httpGet |
The response status is 200 or higher and below 400. | The HTTP probe received an accepted status code, not that business data is correct. |
tcpSocket |
A connection can be established to the port. | The port is open to the probe; this alone does not establish application or data correctness. |
grpc |
The gRPC health response reports SERVING. |
The service reports its protocol-level health status, not a prescribed data-quality result. |
These mechanisms and success conditions are documented by Kubernetes (probe configuration). For HTTP probes, Kubernetes recommends a dedicated health endpoint with a minimal response body (probe configuration). Keep the endpoint inexpensive and decide what a failed result should do before adding checks that depend on a chain of remote services.

Using native gRPC probes
Kubernetes native gRPC probes have been stable since Kubernetes v1.27. They can be used for startup, readiness, and liveness when the service implements the gRPC Health Checking Protocol. The Kubernetes configuration requires a port and does not support authentication parameters for native gRPC probes; verify these constraints against the Kubernetes version and configuration you deploy (Kubernetes gRPC probe documentation).
The gRPC health-checking protocol describes a health service that servers expose and clients can use to check server health (gRPC health-checking guide). It provides a protocol-level availability signal; it does not prescribe how an application should test the freshness, completeness, or correctness of its data.
A practical design review before adding a check
For each proposed check, answer these questions before deciding whether it belongs in startup, readiness, liveness, or monitoring alone:
- What condition is measured? Separate process progress, request-serving ability, transport reachability, and domain-specific data quality.
- What happens when it fails? The consequence may be delaying probe activation, withdrawing one replica from traffic, restarting a container, or alerting an operator.
- How broad are its dependencies? A local process check has a different failure scope from a check that depends on a shared database or several remote services.
- How costly and frequent is it? Keep checks small enough to run at their configured cadence without adding avoidable load.
- What is the blast radius? Consider whether the same dependency failure could make every replica fail simultaneously and trigger an outage-amplifying response.
There is no universal rule that every database check belongs in readiness—or that dependency checks never belong in liveness. Place a check according to what its failure means for initialization, the affected replica’s ability to serve, and the chance that restarting the process can restore progress.
