How to Set Up an AI IDE for Angular

Add Angular’s current IDE-specific AI instructions, optionally connect the experimental CLI MCP server, and verify assistant changes in your project.

To set up an AI IDE for Angular, start with a working Angular project, add Angular’s current IDE-specific instruction file, and give the assistant narrowly scoped tasks whose changes you can review and verify. You can optionally connect Angular CLI through its experimental MCP server; that is separate from loading Angular’s prompt rules.

What the two setup pieces do

Angular publishes framework-specific instruction files and setup guidance for several AI-enabled IDEs. The instructions give a model persistent Angular context so it can better follow the framework’s conventions; they can be used as system instructions or prompt context. The CLI MCP server serves a different purpose: it exposes Angular CLI-related tools to compatible assistants. You can use the instruction files without MCP.

Angular says its rules are updated regularly, so obtain the current file and follow the setup directions for your IDE rather than copying a static snippet. The supported IDE guidance includes Firebase Studio, Copilot-powered IDEs, Cursor, JetBrains IDEs, VS Code, and Windsurf. The filename and location depend on the host. Angular’s LLM prompts and AI IDE setup links to the relevant instructions.

Prepare the Angular project

Use an existing project or create one before configuring the assistant. Angular’s local setup guide, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Node.js v22.22.3 or newer. Minimum versions can change, so confirm the live requirement on the Angular installation guide before installing or upgrading.

  1. Install the Angular CLI using npm, pnpm, yarn, or bun, as described in the official guide.

  2. In a terminal, create a project with ng new <project-name>, or open your existing Angular workspace in your IDE.

  3. Start the local app with npm start and make sure the project runs before asking an AI assistant to change it.

Angular recommends Visual Studio Code and the Angular Language Service for its documented local workflow; CLI commands require a terminal. The Language Service complements an AI assistant by providing Angular-aware editor support.

Add Angular’s instructions in your IDE

Choose the setup directions for your specific host IDE and place Angular’s instruction file where that host expects it. Do not assume a configuration filename or folder from one editor applies to another. If you change IDEs, check whether the new host needs the rules installed in a different location.

Persistent rules establish general Angular guidance; each task still needs relevant project context. In a prompt, state the desired behavior, the feature area or files involved, project constraints, and how you will verify the result. For a broad change spanning files, ask for a plan before edits. For a narrow fix, request a small change and the relevant test or check.

Decide whether to connect Angular CLI MCP

Angular documents its CLI MCP server as experimental. It is optional and intended for compatible assistants that can use MCP tools. The server can provide Angular-aware documentation, workspace analysis, CLI-powered code generation, and development or test workflows; the available tools depend on the current server version.

The launch command is npx @angular/cli mcp. Configuration is host-specific: Angular’s VS Code example uses .vscode/mcp.json with a servers property, while several other hosts use an mcpServers property in their own configuration files. Follow the current Angular CLI MCP documentation for your host instead of reusing an example JSON file across IDEs.

Angular also describes using its official AI Agent Skills alongside MCP where the host supports them: skills provide instruction-level guidance, while MCP supplies actions. Neither capability removes the need to inspect what the assistant proposes or does.

Understand the MCP flags’ limits

Angular documents --read-only and --local-only as options that constrain which tools the MCP server registers. They are not complete edit-control or privacy boundaries: Angular cautions that the host agent may still edit the project and may still send data over a network. Do not treat either flag as a guarantee that changes or network communication are impossible.

Keep requests and changes reviewable

GitHub’s Copilot IDE guidance provides one product-specific example of an inspectable workflow. It describes Ask, Agent, and Plan modes in VS Code, along with repository custom instructions and file references that add context. These mode names and controls are Copilot-specific; other IDEs may work differently. GitHub advises evaluating responses and, for agentic changes, reviewing proposed edits and command output before accepting them. See GitHub’s guidance on asking Copilot questions in an IDE.

  1. Define one outcome and state the relevant constraints, such as which feature should change and what existing behavior must remain.

  2. Provide only the useful file or repository context. If the task touches several files, ask the assistant to explain its plan before it edits.

  3. Inspect the proposed diff and any commands the assistant ran. Check that the changes match the request and do not include unrelated edits.

  4. Run the project’s relevant build, tests, or other checks. If a check fails, share the specific failure and request a targeted correction.

A generated change is not verified merely because the assistant says it is correct. Verification comes from the checks you actually run and review.
