Treat “should not need” as an architectural goal: reduce build-time coupling where practical, while choosing when data is read based on freshness, route count, and how the app will be deployed.
Can Next.js query a database during a build?
Yes. In the Pages Router, Next.js documents that getStaticProps runs on the server at production build time and can make direct database queries. That function is not included in the browser bundle. This is a Pages Router API; the App Router uses different mechanisms.

Build-time access is useful when database content is suitable for prerendered pages and a build should capture a known set of routes. It also means the build needs whatever database connectivity and credentials that query requires. The generated HTML and route output reflect the data available while building; changing the database later does not rewrite an already-built artifact.
For Pages Router build code, the same documentation recommends calling shared server-side data-loading logic directly rather than making an HTTP request to an API route that then fetches the same data. That avoids an unnecessary internal API hop. Keep credentials in server-side code, and remember that data passed into rendered props or page output may be visible to visitors.

Choose when to read the data
| Approach | When data is read | Suitable when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build-time query | During the production build | Content is stable enough for a snapshot and routes are known | The build needs database access; output can become stale until rebuilt or refreshed by another strategy. |
| Runtime server rendering or dynamic handling | On a request, or on a first visit depending on route mode | Data must be current at request time or paths are not all enumerated ahead of time | Requires an application server/runtime and data availability when the request is handled. |
| Static shell with client-side fetching | Shell at build; selected data in the browser | Dynamic or frequently changing portions can load after the initial page | The browser needs a deliberate data-access path, and the initial HTML may not contain that data. |
| Hybrid prerendering | Selected routes at build; other paths handled according to route configuration | A large or changing route collection has a smaller subset worth prerendering | Fallback and cache behavior depend on the Next.js version and configuration. |
Next.js recommends Static Generation where appropriate because generated pages can be served by a CDN rather than rendered by a server for every request. This is the framework’s recommendation, not a universal performance guarantee: actual build duration, freshness, caching, and reliability depend on the application and deployment.
How App Router paths are generated
In the App Router, generateStaticParams supplies dynamic route parameters for build-time generation. It can provide all paths or only a subset; what happens for omitted paths depends on the route configuration. The current API reference, last updated February 27, 2026, also states that generateStaticParams is not called again during ISR revalidation.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
That function concerns which paths to generate; it is not the App Router equivalent of the Pages Router’s getStaticProps. App Router components can also access data on the server, but the right rendering and caching behavior depends on the route’s implementation and configuration. Check the documentation for the Next.js version in use before relying on a specific refresh or omitted-path behavior.

A static export is a stronger constraint than ordinary prerendering. Next.js runs the Server Components used by the app during the export build and emits static files. As the static export guide, last updated August 25, 2026, explains, those files can be hosted by a server that serves static assets. That server cannot execute application code to query a database for each request.

If a page needs live or personalized database data after deployment, a static file alone cannot provide it. You need an appropriate runtime server path or a browser-side data path. Static export can still be suitable for the stable parts of a site, but the dynamic portions need a separately designed way to obtain current data.
How to reduce build-time database coupling
- Decide how fresh each page must be. If a build-time snapshot is acceptable, prerendering may fit. For request-current or user-specific data, plan for runtime handling or client-side fetching instead.
- Check the deployment output. Determine whether the app runs with a Next.js server/runtime or is exported as static files. A static file host cannot run request-time database code.
- Choose a data source for builds that still need content. Options to evaluate include a versioned data export or snapshot, a content/API source, or direct access to the database. A snapshot can decouple the build from a live database only if the project has a process to create and provide it.
- Keep secrets on the server. Use server-side data-loading code for credentials; do not assume that values passed to rendered output remain private.
- Measure the actual trade-offs. Compare build reliability, data freshness, route count, build duration, cache behavior, and where credentials and network access are required. Avoid assuming that removing a database connection automatically makes a build faster, safer, or more reliable.
When a build-time database query is reasonable
A direct query can be a sound choice when the content changes infrequently, the set of routes is manageable, and the build environment is intentionally allowed to reach the database. It is less suitable when builds must proceed without production data access, content must be current per request, or personalization depends on the visitor. In those cases, use a deliberate snapshot/content source or move the relevant read to an available runtime path rather than expecting static output to update itself.
