Your microSD Card Has Five Speed Markings—and You May Be Watching the Wrong One

microSD speed labels measure different things. Match the class your device requires to your workload, and treat “up to” MB/s as a peak claim—not a guaranteed minimum.

The right microSD card is the one that meets your device’s required performance class and supports the job you need it to do—not necessarily the one with the biggest “up to” MB/s number. The markings describe different workloads: sustained sequential writing, application access, or peak transfer speed. Match the class and interface to your device before comparing headline speeds.

Which microSD card speed rating do you need?

Start with the device manual. Find its required speed class, supported card capacity, and file-system requirements; then choose a compatible card that meets or exceeds the required symbol in the relevant class family. The SD Association cautions that similar-looking numbers across class families do not guarantee equivalent performance. A device requiring Class 10, for example, may not get its expected write speed from a U1 card simply because both figures are 10 MB/s. SD Association speed-class guidance.

There are four SD Association Speed Class families: Speed Class, UHS Speed Class, Video Speed Class, and SD Express Speed Class. Application Performance Class is a separate marking relevant to app-oriented use. Shoppers may also see a manufacturer’s peak transfer-speed claim, but that is not another official class. In practice, these are the labels and numbers most likely to be compared on a card:

  • C marks Speed Class, such as C10.
  • U marks UHS Speed Class, such as U1 or U3.
  • V marks Video Speed Class, such as V30.
  • A marks Application Performance Class, such as A1 or A2.
  • “Up to” MB/s is a manufacturer’s maximum transfer-speed claim, not an SD Association Speed Class.

The C, U, and V families describe minimum sequential performance under standard-defined conditions. A ratings address application-oriented access behavior. A peak MB/s claim describes a maximum, not a guaranteed minimum. The SD Association says its Speed Classes assure minimum sequential card access performance under conditions specified by the standard. SD Association: Speed Class and SD Association: Speed Class Standards for Video Recording.

What do C, U, and V numbers mean?

These are separate sequential-performance class systems. Their numbers indicate minimum performance thresholds, not maximum file-copy speeds. The UHS and Video values below are the minimum rates specified by the SD Association; applicability depends on the card’s interface and host support. SD Association speed-class guidance and SD Association video-recording speed classes.

Marking family Common symbols Meaning
Speed Class C2, C4, C6, C10 Sequential-performance class; the number denotes the class threshold in MB/s.
UHS Speed Class U1, U3 U1: minimum 10 MB/s; U3: minimum 30 MB/s sustained sequential performance under standard conditions. UHS host support matters.
Video Speed Class V6, V10, V30, V60, V90 The number denotes a minimum sequential rate of 6, 10, 30, 60, or 90 MB/s, respectively. Interface compatibility matters; V60 and V90 are associated with UHS-II/III.

Do not treat C10, U1, and V10 as interchangeable because each is associated with a 10 MB/s threshold. A host’s class requirement and the class family supported by the card both matter; matching the same nominal number across different symbols may not deliver the expected write performance.

What do A1 and A2 mean—and are they faster for video?

A1 and A2 are Application Performance Class ratings, intended for application-oriented use where random input/output operations matter. They address a different workload from sustained sequential video writing. The SD Association cites Android phones and tablets as examples, but whether a particular device can run apps from removable storage depends on its support and configuration. SD Association application-performance guidance.

A2 does not mean a card is better for video recording than a card without an A rating. For video, use the device’s required C, U, or V class and confirm the card’s interface compatibility. An A marking alone does not establish that a card meets the camera’s sustained-write requirement.

Is V30 faster than U3?

Not in the sense of a universal head-to-head speed ranking. U3 and V30 both indicate a 30 MB/s minimum sequential-performance threshold under their respective class standards, but they belong to different class families and have different applicability rules. Use the symbol and family your device specifies rather than choosing by comparing the number alone.

Why the “up to” MB/s number can be the wrong one

A manufacturer’s “up to” read or write figure is a peak-performance claim, not the card’s guaranteed minimum sustained-write class. It cannot substitute for the C, U, or V symbol required by a camera or other recording device. Actual transfer results also depend on the card, host, and interface; a card cannot realize an interface-dependent peak if the host does not support that interface. When computer file transfers are your priority, check the card’s product specifications and make sure the reader and computer support the relevant interface.

Choose for the workload

Continuous video recording

Use the camera manual’s minimum write-class requirement as your starting point. The SD Association says a camera capable of 4K may use U3 or V30–V90, but resolution alone does not identify the required card: bitrate and recording settings matter. Higher frame rates, including 60–120 fps, may require a faster card. Check the manual for the specific recording mode you plan to use. SD Association video and class guidance.

Apps on a phone or tablet

First confirm that the device supports installing or running apps from a microSD card. If it does, A1 or A2 is the relevant marking to investigate; it is not a substitute for any separate sequential-performance class the device requires.

Copying files to a computer

Compare peak transfer claims only after checking the card, reader, and computer interfaces. The C, U, and V class symbols are minimum sequential-performance ratings, not promises of a particular maximum copy speed.

Check capacity, format, and interface before buying

Speed is only one part of compatibility. The SD Association lists microSD dimensions as 11 × 15 × 1.0 mm, SDHC capacity as more than 2 GB up to 32 GB, and SDXC as more than 32 GB up to 2 TB. Those ranges do not mean every host accepts every capacity or file system, so check the device manual for its limits and requirements. SD Association capacity guidance.

  1. Read the host manual. Note the required class family and symbol, supported bus/interface, capacity limit, and file-system requirements.
  2. Match the class requirement. Choose a supported card meeting or exceeding the required symbol within the relevant class family; do not substitute a similar number from another family.
  3. Match the workload. For sustained video, prioritize the specified sequential-write class. For supported app use, consider A1/A2. For computer transfers, check compatible peak-transfer specifications across the card and host setup.
  4. Verify the exact card variant. Card capacities and advertised speeds can vary within a product line, so check the specifications for the capacity and model you intend to use.

There is no universal fastest choice independent of device and workload: a card that is suitable for one host may fail to meet another host’s class, capacity, or interface requirements.
