It cannot tell you whether the something is the entity you meant. In one daily visibility check described by writer Marin T. Kael, a query for an author returned four results, and one of them was an Andean condor. The count of four looked healthy. The raw response showed a duplicate identity, a wildly different ranking score, and a match that had nothing to do with the author.
What the response actually contained
The check asked Google’s Knowledge Graph Search API whether an entity exists. Kael’s original logging stored only the number of results. Once the raw response was examined, the picture changed:

- Two distinct machine IDs were both labeled “Marin T. Kael.” One carried “Author” as its description. The other had no description at all.
- Scores of 43 were reported for the first two entries.
- An Andean condor appeared with a score of 0.0374.
- A fourth result fell below the logging cutoff the author had set, so it was invisible in the logs.
Two entries sharing a name, one with a useful description and one without, is exactly the kind of ambiguity a count hides. A reader looking at “4 results” would reasonably assume four candidates for one entity, when the response actually contained two copies of the same name and an unrelated bird.

A count collapses every result into one integer. It discards three things an audit depends on:
#1 Best Overall
- 6 Iconic Birds of Prey: This detailed set includes 6 hand-painted figurines of majestic raptors: Golden Eagle, Red-Tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle, Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcon, and Vulture. Each figure highlights the distinct features and fierce beauty of these powerful birds.
- Solid Plastic Design: Crafted from solid, non-hollow plastic, these bird figures are built to last. The sturdy construction ensures long-term durability, making them ideal for both play and display as high-quality collectibles.
- Sized for Little Hands: These bird models are perfectly sized for toddlers and young children. Easy to hold and carry, they encourage hands-on exploration and imaginative play for kids.
- Lifelike Detail and Realistic Poses: Each bird figurine is sculpted in a natural pose with realistic feather textures and markings, sparking curiosity and helping children learn about bird species through tactile, interactive play.
- Ideal Gift for Bird Lovers: Perfect for birthdays, classroom activities, or bird-themed parties, these figurines also work great as cake toppers, party favors, or educational toys—sure to delight birdwatchers and young nature enthusiasts alike.
- Identity: which machine ID was returned at the top, and whether it changed from one day to the next.
- Ranking: how far apart the scores are. Here, 43 and 0.0374 differ by roughly three orders of magnitude, but a count treats the condor the same as the author.
- Context: the descriptions and raw fields that explain why an entry matched.
Kael’s central argument is that observability depends on preserving these details. Her line for it is blunt: “A number you cannot audit against the raw response is a number you are choosing to trust forever.”
Recognizing a person is not the same as recognizing their work
The article also reports two work-level queries: one for a book title and one for a series name, each including the author’s name. Both returned zero results, even though the person themselves resolved in the entity lookup. The practical distinction is that an API can recognize an entity while returning nothing for entities linked to it, so a monitoring check on a creator’s books cannot be inferred from a check on the creator’s name.
Rank #2
- REALISTIC BIRDS OF PREY FIGURINES: Hand-painted eagle, falcon, owl, and vulture toy animals with lifelike textures and colors that spark imagination and make every play session feel like real wildlife discovery.
- EDUCATIONAL ANIMAL FIGURES FOR KIDS: Perfect for STEM learning, school projects, homeschool lessons, and nature play while helping kids recognize bird species, habitats, and predator traits through hands-on fun.
- ARTISTIC DETAIL: A true reflection of nature on a smaller scale. Each bird figurine is 3–4" tall and professionally sculpted and individually hand-painted, capturing the unique colors and characteristics of each species with exceptional accuracy.
- PERFECT SIZE FOR PLAY AND DISPLAY: Hand-sized bird models ideal for dioramas, science tables, cake toppers, and collectible shelves while still being easy for kids to hold, move, and create stories with.
- GREAT GIFT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS & COLLECTORS: A fun surprise for wildlife fans, educators, and curious kids who love realistic animal toys, making birthdays, holidays, and learning moments more exciting and memorable.
What a monitoring record should keep
Based on the failure described above, a record that can explain a surprising result needs these fields:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The top machine ID returned for the query.
- The score attached to that top ID.
- The count of results above a stated floor, with the floor value written down.
- The date the top ID was first seen, so identity changes are visible over time.
- The top three raw results, including descriptions, so a duplicate or unrelated match can be checked.

| Result count only | No | No | No |

Treat the floor and the score with care
The cutoff in Kael’s log was an arbitrary threshold chosen by the author, not a value supplied by the API. If you build a similar check, record the threshold you chose and why, and keep it separate from anything the API reports as a confidence measure.
The same caution applies to scores. Kael warns against reading a resultScore as a probability, a percentage, or a scale that can be compared across different queries. The article makes these points from the author’s own observations. The evidence here does not include Google’s official documentation for score meaning, request parameters, or the response schema, so the score semantics described above should be treated as the author’s interpretation rather than confirmed API behavior. Check the current official Knowledge Graph Search API documentation before you build alerts on any particular field.

Practical takeaway for your own checks
If your check only logs how many results came back, a shift from four to four tells you nothing. Log the top identifier, its score, and enough raw output to see every candidate that cleared your floor. When a result looks wrong, you can then answer the question that matters: which entity was matched, and on what basis.
Verified in the source article: the duplicate identities, the score values, and the work-level zero results. Not established: how the score is calculated, whether it is stable across API versions, and whether the returned results are representative of all matches for a name.
