If Expo + Supabase signs a user in but the app looks signed out after reopening, check how the Supabase client saves and restores its session. A login flag held only in React memory disappears when the process ends; a persistent Supabase session needs a storage adapter and persistSession: true. The app should also wait for Auth to restore that session before deciding which screens to show.
Why am I signed out when I reopen my Expo app?
A successful sign-in proves that authentication worked in that moment; it does not prove that the app can restore the session on its next launch. Check the full path: Supabase must write the session to storage, the client must use that same storage when it starts, and the UI must wait for the restored Auth state instead of relying on a temporary React state variable.

Expo’s current Supabase guide uses a SQLite-backed localStorage shim and configures the client to persist sessions. In that correctly initialized setup, Supabase says, “The client stores sessions, so email and password sign-in needs no extra configuration.” That statement depends on the storage and persistence setup shown in the guide; it is not a guarantee for every unconfigured client. See Expo’s Supabase guide.

Option 1: Expo’s SQLite-backed localStorage integration
Expo’s current integration installs the SQLite localStorage shim before creating the Supabase client, then passes localStorage as the client’s storage. The key settings are persistSession: true and autoRefreshToken: true. Follow the package installation and initialization shown in Expo’s guide, keeping the shim import ahead of client creation.
Option 2: Supabase’s React Native AsyncStorage example
Supabase’s React Native quickstart shows a native setup using AsyncStorage as the storage adapter, alongside session persistence and token refresh. It is another documented pattern, not a reason to initialize a second client with different storage. Select the setup that matches your project and package compatibility, and ensure all Auth calls use the same client. See the Supabase React Native quickstart and Expo’s AsyncStorage reference.

| Approach | What the official example uses | Security and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Expo integration | SQLite-backed localStorage shim passed as the Supabase client’s storage | Current Expo-specific guide; follow its setup for the project’s Expo and package versions. |
| Supabase React Native quickstart | AsyncStorage for native, supplied as the client’s storage | Persistent but unencrypted, according to Expo’s AsyncStorage reference. |
| Expo SecureStore | Encrypted native key-value storage | Designed for small secrets and persistence across app restarts and updates. Confirm compatibility with the Supabase storage adapter before treating it as a drop-in replacement. See Expo SecureStore documentation. |
These options are not automatically interchangeable: use a compatible adapter and avoid mismatched client initialization. Persistence alone does not encrypt stored data. SecureStore’s platform behavior also differs: Android data is not preserved after uninstall, while iOS Keychain data may remain after reinstall with the same bundle ID.
Configure native token refresh around app state
On iOS and Android, connect Supabase’s automatic refresh to the app lifecycle: start refresh when the app becomes active, and stop it while the app is inactive or backgrounded. Both Expo’s integration and the Supabase quickstart demonstrate this pattern. Register the AppState listener once, rather than adding another listener every time a screen renders. Refer to Expo’s setup or the Supabase quickstart for the corresponding example.

Let restored Auth state control protected screens
Keep an initial loading or restoration state while the client checks storage. Then show authenticated routes only when Supabase reports a session, and show signed-out routes when it does not. Supabase’s quickstart demonstrates observing Auth changes with onAuthStateChange and reading claims with getClaims; Expo Router’s authentication guide demonstrates a provider that tracks isLoading while session state is restored.
If the session is actually restored but the app briefly shows a sign-in screen, that is often a UI initialization problem: hold navigation at the loading state until restoration resolves. Do not treat a React state flag as durable storage.

What should I inspect if the session still disappears?
Use this sequence to separate a storage problem from a startup, refresh, or session-termination problem. Without the app’s initialization code and logs, no single root cause can be identified.
- Verify sign-in returned a session. Inspect the result from the sign-in call and relevant Auth logs. Distinguish a successful user response from a non-null session.
- Verify one client and one storage setup. Confirm the application imports its configured client before Auth use, creates it once, and passes the intended persistent storage with
persistSession: trueandautoRefreshToken: true. - Check lifecycle refresh. Confirm the native AppState listener starts refresh on
activeand stops it when the app backgrounds, and that the listener is not registered repeatedly. - Observe startup Auth state. On relaunch, check whether an initial/restored Auth event provides a session. If it does, keep protected navigation in a loading state until your app has processed it.
- If no valid session remains, check termination causes. Review sign-out calls, invalid refresh tokens, security actions, project session limits, inactivity settings, and maximum session lifetime. Supabase documents these session controls in its User sessions reference.
Does session persistence prevent Supabase sessions from expiring?
No. Persistent storage lets the client retain and restore session data; it does not override Supabase’s expiry or session-termination rules. Supabase says access tokens typically last “5 minutes to 1 hour” and recommends the default “1 hour” JWT expiration for most applications. Session behavior can also be affected by configured lifetime limits, inactivity settings, sign-out, or security actions. See Supabase’s User sessions documentation.

Could email confirmation explain a missing session?
Yes, if the apparent login was actually a new sign-up. Expo notes that new Supabase projects confirm email addresses by default; with confirmation required, signUp can return a user while session is null until the address is confirmed. That differs from an established session disappearing after an app restart. Check the returned sign-up result and your project’s confirmation flow in Expo’s Supabase guide.
Is the saved Supabase session encrypted?
Not necessarily. Persistence describes whether data survives app restarts, not whether it is encrypted. Expo documents AsyncStorage as persistent but unencrypted; Expo SecureStore provides encrypted native key-value storage and is designed for small secrets. Check that any chosen storage adapter is supported by your Supabase client, and account for SecureStore’s reinstall behavior: Android data is not retained on uninstall, while iOS Keychain data may survive a reinstall with the same bundle ID. See AsyncStorage and SecureStore.
Keep Supabase secret keys out of the app client. Expo warns that secret keys bypass row-level security; use the appropriate client key and enforce access through your database policies. See Expo’s Supabase guide.
