Your code editor can hint at how you like to work: in a full-featured IDE, a flexible text editor, or a terminal-first setup. But it cannot tell anyone how skilled you are—or what kind of developer you should be. The editor stereotypes are best taken as jokes about habits, not personality tests.
What your editor choice might suggest
In his DEV Community article, Hadil Ben Abdallah turns familiar editor preferences into playful developer archetypes. The point is not that a tool reveals a user’s character; it is that people often choose tools that fit the way they prefer to work.

- VS Code: A familiar, flexible starting point for someone who likes a capable editor and an extensive ecosystem of add-ons.
- IntelliJ: The person who wants a full IDE with substantial development functionality gathered in one place.
- Cursor: A developer curious about an AI-oriented coding workflow.
- Vim: The keyboard-focused, terminal-comfortable user who values a hands-on editing routine.
- Zed: Someone drawn to a modern, streamlined editor experience.
- Emacs: The committed tinkerer who enjoys shaping an editor around personal preferences.
- Eclipse: The pragmatic user who sticks with a familiar development environment.
- Notepad: The minimalist—or, for the joke, someone making do with the bare essentials.
These sketches are deliberately broad. They are not evidence about what users actually know, how quickly they work, or what languages they use.

The real differences are about workflow
Editor choices can be discussed more usefully as preferences than as personality labels. A few practical contrasts help explain why two developers might pick different tools without either choice being superior.

These are broad discussion axes, not a ranking. The cited articles do not establish which editor is faster, more productive, or best for a particular developer.

What an editor cannot tell you
A tool preference does not establish a user’s competence, seniority, language, or personality. Someone may choose an editor because it suits a project, fits an existing workflow, or simply feels comfortable. The choice alone cannot distinguish among those reasons.

Ben Abdallah makes that distinction explicit: “Your IDE doesn’t define you as a developer. It just says a lot about how you like to work.” That is a lighthearted observation about workflow, not a research-backed claim about the people who use particular editors.

Why the jokes work—and where they stop
Editor debates often carry a sense of culture and personal preference, as another DEV Community opinion piece on editor history and culture illustrates. That kind of discussion can be entertaining, but it does not supply objective evidence about market share, speed, or productivity. A stereotype may be recognizable without being true of the next person who opens the same tool.
So treat the archetypes as conversation starters, not labels. If someone tells you they use Vim, IntelliJ, or Notepad, you have learned which editor they named—not how good a developer they are.
