A calendar invitation cannot ordinarily control a thermostat or place an order by itself. But if an AI assistant can both read invitations and act through connected apps or devices, malicious text hidden in an invitation may try to steer the assistant into taking actions it was never meant to take. The cupcakes in this headline are an illustration, not a reported incident.
This risk is known as agent hijacking through indirect prompt injection: an attacker puts instructions in content the agent is expected to read, such as an email, file, website, or calendar invite. The danger comes from combining untrusted content with an assistant’s permissions—not from a calendar event magically controlling a smart home.

How could a calendar invite lead to an action?
An AI assistant may be asked to summarize an invitation, find a time, or add an event. If the assistant also has tools connected to email, shopping, or smart-home controls, text in the invitation could attempt to redirect what it does. For example, an invitation might contain instructions aimed at the assistant rather than its human reader. If the agent treats those instructions as authoritative and has access to an action-capable tool, the result could go beyond calendar management.
NIST describes this pattern as agent hijacking: malicious instructions are placed in data an agent may ingest, taking advantage of the weak separation between trusted instructions and untrusted content. The invitation is a possible delivery route, not a special vulnerability in calendars. The same boundary problem can arise with emails, shared documents, websites, or other external data.

The key condition is a chain of capabilities: the agent reads attacker-controlled content, interprets it as instructions, and can reach a tool with enough authority to carry out the requested action. If any link in that chain is absent or independently checked, the specific action may be blocked.
What has been demonstrated—and what has not?
Research demonstrations involving assistants and home appliances
In an August 2025 paper, Ben Nassi, Stav Cohen, and Or Yair reported 14 attack scenarios across five threat classes involving Gemini web, mobile, and Google Assistant experiences. The described consequences included deleting calendar events, manipulating home appliances, exfiltrating emails and meetings, and phishing. These were demonstrations in the configurations the authors examined; they do not show that every assistant, account, or smart home is vulnerable. Read the paper.
The authors said they disclosed their findings to Google and that Google deployed dedicated mitigations. That is evidence of a response, not proof that all related risks have been eliminated or that other products have the same protections.

How to interpret the 73% figure
The authors rated 73% of the analyzed threats High-Critical in their threat assessment. The denominator is the threats in that paper’s assessment—not users, deployed assistants, homes, or attacks observed in the wild. It is not a measure of how likely a household is to experience an attack. The paper’s abstract and study details provide the context for that result.
A separate NIST evaluation is not a household attack rate
NIST CAISI reported that attack success in its simulated AgentDojo evaluation ranged from 11% for the strongest baseline to 81% for a strongest novel attack against the tested upgraded model. Those results describe that evaluation setup. They should not be applied as an estimate of calendar-invite attacks or smart-home compromise rates. NIST’s evaluation summary explains the test context.
The sources cited here do not establish a population-level prevalence rate for calendar-to-smart-home agent hijacking. Demonstrations show a possible failure mode; they do not tell us how often it occurs across commercial products or in homes.

Why is this a security gap?
External content crosses a trust boundary
A calendar invitation is data supplied by someone else. An assistant may need to read it to complete a legitimate task, but that does not make its embedded text a trusted command. NIST’s description of agent hijacking focuses on the lack of a clear boundary between trusted instructions and untrusted data.

Tool access turns interpretation into authority
A language model can produce a response, but an agent connected to tools may also send messages, change records, or operate devices. NIST’s January 2026 request for information notes that agents can plan and take autonomous actions affecting real-world systems or environments. It frames the problem as both familiar software security—controlling access, identity, and execution—and a newer challenge created when model outputs are coupled to tools. NIST’s announcement discusses these risks and asks how agent access can be constrained and monitored.
Smart-home security is a related, separate layer
Protecting a device or home network does not, by itself, prevent an agent from being manipulated through external text. NIST’s NIST IR 8267 reviewed security features in consumer product categories including smart lights, cameras, doorbells, plugs, thermostats, and televisions. It is an initial public draft from October 2019, so it is background on the product and ecosystem dimensions of IoT security—not an assessment of current device models or proof that a particular device can stop prompt injection. See the NIST IR 8267 publication page.

What can users do to reduce the risk?
No single household setting guarantees protection against agent hijacking. The practical aim is to limit the damage an assistant can cause if it misreads or follows hostile content, and to make consequential actions independently checkable. OWASP recommends treating external data, including emails and API responses, as untrusted; separating decision-making from execution; validating tool calls; and requiring approval for consequential actions. CISA and partner agencies likewise emphasize constrained autonomy, strong identity management, oversight, monitoring, threat modeling, and regular security assessments.
- Inventory what the assistant can read and control. Review connected apps and devices in the assistant’s settings. Note whether it can read calendars or email, and whether it can also change events, send messages, make purchases, unlock doors, or alter heating and other device settings.
- Remove permissions it does not need. Prefer the narrowest access that still supports the tasks you use. Where possible, keep calendar access separate from write access to smart-home devices rather than granting one agent broad authority across both.
- Require confirmation for consequential actions. Set a human approval step before purchases, unlocking, heating changes, or other actions with financial, privacy, safety, or physical consequences. Approval should apply to the exact action being proposed, not serve as a blanket permission for a sequence of unseen actions.
- Check activity after an unexpected action. Review the assistant’s history and relevant account or device activity. If an action was not yours, revoke the relevant integration or permission while you investigate, and use the service’s account-security controls to address suspicious access.
- Ask vendors how they test and constrain agents. Useful questions include whether they test indirect prompt injection and approval bypass, validate tool calls independently, restrict privileges, expose an audit trail, and update mitigations when weaknesses are found. NIST announced an AI Agent Standards Initiative in February 2026 that includes work on agent security and identity; it signals active standards work, not a finalized universal standard. NIST’s initiative announcement outlines its scope.
These are risk-reduction steps drawn from security guidance, not household measures experimentally validated by the 2025 study. They reduce an agent’s available authority and add checks; they cannot guarantee that a system will resist every attack.

When comparing configurations, assess the boundary between what an assistant can read and what it can do—not just the number of integrations it offers.
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| External content | Which sources the agent can ingest, such as calendar invitations, email, shared files, or websites. |
| Integration permissions | Whether each connection is read-only or can create, edit, send, delete, or otherwise make changes. |
| Reachable devices and actions | Which devices the agent can control and whether that includes high-impact actions such as unlocking or changing heating. |
| Action-specific approval | Whether the system asks for confirmation before the particular consequential action, rather than relying on broad or standing consent. |
| Audit trail | Whether users can see what the agent accessed, which tools it called, and what actions it completed. |
| Security testing and updates | Whether the provider tests indirect prompt injection, tool misuse, privilege escalation, and approval bypass, and communicates mitigations. |
These are practical comparison criteria derived from NIST, OWASP, and CISA guidance, not a ranking of vendors. OWASP also recommends adversarial testing for prompt override, data exfiltration, misuse of tools, privilege escalation, and approval bypass. See the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet. CISA and partner agencies’ May 2026 guidance calls for layered defenses, limited autonomy and access, oversight, continuous monitoring, threat modeling, and regular security assessments.
