Soft With Meaning: A Personal Browser Companion for Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Soft With Meaning is a small browser-based companion to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. It lets a listener choose a season and movement, read explanations tied to the poems and score annotations, and ask questions that retrieve relevant lines from the project’s own text. Its creator, Xiao, says it was made for one friend—not as a mass-market product—and designed to work locally after its model has been cached.

What the companion offers

In Xiao’s account, the page connects each movement to explanations of its printed sonnets, score annotations, and musical word-painting. A listener can select a season and movement, then explore examples such as the barking dog in Spring, the languor of Summer heat, or the sleepy drunkards in Autumn. The aim is to give a listener context while the music is playing, rather than to provide a recording or a general-purpose chatbot.

The author says the page synthesizes short musical motifs with the Web Audio API instead of playing a copyrighted recording. The project’s explanations include the viola repeating two short notes for the Spring dog, tremolo for Summer thunder, pizzicato for Winter rain, and descending chromatic steps followed by silence for the hunted prey in Autumn. These are the project’s own interpretations as described by Xiao, not independently established musicological conclusions.

How its question feature works

The question box is retrieval-based: it is intended to find a relevant line in the page’s manually written corpus, not compose a new answer. Xiao says the corpus draws on the sonnets and score annotations. The page embeds lines and questions with transformers.js and a quantized all-MiniLM-L6-v2 model, then combines cosine similarity with word overlap to select a close match.

That distinction matters for expectations. A question such as “what is the thunder in summer?” may return a related explanation already present in the project’s text; the feature does not promise a free-form, conversational account. Xiao says an earlier extractive-answering component once returned “goatherd” for a question about the Spring dog, so it was removed. If model loading fails, the page is said to fall back to word search. These implementation details and behavior are reported by the author, rather than independently audited.

What “offline” means here

Xiao describes the page as running in the browser without a server, account, or API key, with the model cached on the device. The stated design goal is to keep listening choices and questions local. That is a description of the project’s intended architecture, not the result of an independent privacy or network-traffic audit.

The account does not establish that a first visit works without an internet connection. A model that is cached on the device must first be obtained, and the source does not say whether all page assets and model files are available offline before that happens. It is therefore more precise to understand “offline” as the intended experience after caching, rather than a guarantee of first-use offline access.

What has been tested—and what remains a claim

Xiao reports running an end-to-end headless-browser test in which the model loaded and five questions returned intended lines, including examples about the dog, thunder, and dying prey. The published account does not include test artifacts or an independent reproduction, so this is useful context about the creator’s testing, not external verification of reliability across browsers, devices, or questions.

The account was published on DEV Community on October 2, 2026. Xiao says the friend the project was built for described it as “soft with meaning”—a fitting summary of a deliberately small listening aid whose value lies in pairing a personal response to the music with explanations of particular movements.
