A bug report can show a precise browser or operating-system value without saying whether software detected it or the reporter typed it from memory. Keep those origins visible: label measured and stated values separately, retain both when they conflict, and record how automated values were collected. A structured form can make intake more consistent, but it cannot prove an answer is correct.
Why provenance belongs beside the value
In an issue tracker, “Browser: Example Browser 120” may look definitive. Yet it could be an automatically collected string, a reporter’s recollection, or a value copied from somewhere else. Without a source label, later readers cannot tell which.

That distinction matters during triage. A detected value and a person’s account can both be useful evidence, even when they disagree. Replacing one with the other erases information that may help explain why a bug occurs or why it cannot be reproduced. Treat provenance as part of the field, not as an assumption readers must infer.
Separate detected values from reported ones
For fields that can be collected automatically but may also be recalled by a person, use distinct labels such as “Browser (detected)” and “Browser (as reported).” Mark human-provided steps and expectations as stated rather than implying they were independently verified.

This is an illustrative design, not a universally tested schema. Use labels that fit your tracker and team, and preserve original observations if values conflict. “Stated” describes provenance, not credibility or quality: it does not mean a report is careless, only that a person supplied the information.
What a detected browser value can—and cannot—establish
The HTTP User-Agent request header can identify an application, operating system, vendor, and/or version, but it is not necessarily a complete or exact description of a user’s environment. Browser User-Agent reduction can make some details generic or reduce minor version components. Label the method and scope of collection, and avoid presenting the result as ground truth. See MDN’s User-Agent documentation for the header’s purpose and reduction caveats.

- This clever bug issue reporting graphic features a bug issue report that will make you laugh wether you're a QA Engineer, QA Tester, Software Tester, QA Team Member, Project Manager or Developer.
- Complete with a witty title, steps to reproduce, and actual and expected results, it's the perfect way to lighten the mood in the office.
- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
Collection also has a privacy cost. MDN notes that User-Agent information can contribute to fingerprinting and describes reduction as a mitigation. Capture only the environment details needed to diagnose the issue; more data is not automatically more useful.

Use forms to standardize intake, not to certify answers
Structured issue forms can ask reporters for information consistently and make selected inputs required. GitHub says templates can standardize the information contributors are asked to include, and its issue forms support field types and required inputs. That helps teams request useful context; it does not establish whether a response was measured, independently checked, or correct. See GitHub’s documentation on issue and pull request templates.

For each field, decide whether the team needs an automatic reading, a human account, or both. Where automation is used, note its collection method and, when relevant, collection time and limitations. Where a value comes from a person, label it as stated. Make a field required only when the information is important enough to justify the added effort for reporters.
Choose an intake design around four trade-offs
| Consideration | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Provenance clarity | Can readers distinguish detected values from reported claims, and can conflicting observations remain visible? |
| Useful completeness | Does the form collect enough context to reproduce and triage the issue without asking for irrelevant detail? |
| Privacy | Are the environment details collected necessary for diagnosis, given the fingerprinting implications of browser data? |
| Workflow fit | Can the tracker support structured, maintainable fields that match how the team actually handles issues? |
Documentation establishes that GitHub issue forms support structured prompts, and MDN describes User-Agent limitations and privacy concerns; these sources do not provide a head-to-head evaluation of tracker products. Choose based on the needs and capabilities of your workflow rather than assuming one tool guarantees better evidence.

Keep issue-category statistics in their proper context
A study by Herzig, Just, and Zeller manually reviewed 7,401 closed and fixed reports from five open-source Java projects using Jira and Bugzilla. It found that 42.6% of issue reports in the combined datasets were misclassified; 33.8% of reports originally filed as bugs were reclassified as resulting in a feature, documentation update, or refactoring rather than a code fix. Those figures concern issue-category classification—not whether environment fields were measured or typed—and should not be used to claim that reporters’ environment details are inaccurate. The study appeared at IEEE ICSE 2013: Herzig, Just, and Zeller’s paper.
