The game is meant to end in one of two ways: wind tears the flame from its wick, or shielding it for too long smothers it. Its creator, Pablo Lampkeeper, found that the first loss condition initially did not work in practice: in an unattended run, the flame survived about 116 seconds. The fix was not only to tune the wind, but to make its danger visible.
What is Lamp Keeper?
Lamp Keeper is a small browser game built as one HTML file using plain canvas. Its central action is deliberately simple: hold one key to shield a candle flame from the wind. But holding the shield indefinitely is not safe, because too much shielding smothers the flame. Meanwhile, a bird dives toward a mouse near the candle, adding another visible threat.

The design depends on a tension between two verbs: protect the flame from gusts, but do not protect it for too long. The game communicates the consequences through distinct endings: “the wind tore it off the wick” or “you smothered it.”
Why was losing initially impossible?
The wind was intended to extinguish the flame, but the gusts were not strong enough to make that happen reliably. Pablo reports that, with no player input, the flame survived about 116 seconds. At that point, smothering the flame by holding the shield too long was the only effective way to lose.

That gap matters to the design: a condition that exists in the rules but does not happen during play is not a meaningful threat. As Pablo put it, “A lose condition that cannot fire is not a lose condition, it is decoration.”
How the wind loss condition was tuned
Pablo changed the wind-offset calculation to use a single normalized value from 0 to 1, with the flame dying at 1. He says this made the difficulty independent of screen size and made gust strength easier to tune. The goal after tuning was for doing nothing to kill the flame in about 18 seconds.

That 18-second figure is the creator’s reported tuning target, not an independently reproduced test result. Likewise, the earlier 116-second survival time is an author-reported observation, not a benchmark for every run or device. Both figures are from Pablo’s account in the DEV Community post published September 23, 2026.
How the game makes wind damage visible
At first, wind felt unfair because the player could not see it approaching. The creator added several visual cues so the danger reads before the flame is lost:

- Gust streaks appear as soon as wind begins.
- The flame bends in response to the gust.
- The edge being pushed glows red.
These cues make the threat legible: players can see the wind act on the flame and understand why the flame is in danger. Pablo describes the principle this way: “If a player cannot see a threat coming, losing reads as cheating.”
How the flame bends without leaving the wick
The flame needs to lean under wind while remaining visibly attached at its base. Pablo says the game anchors the flame and uses ctx.transform to shear it: the base stays put while the tip shifts. Translating the entire flame sideways moved its base too, making it appear detached from the wick.

- CATCH THE CHAMELEON: A bluffing board game where players must race to catch the chameleon before It's too late
- ONE SECRET WORD: In this board game for adults and family everyone knows the secret word - except for the player with the chameleon card
- DON'T GET CAUGHT: Use hidden codes, carefully chosen words, and a bit of finger-pointing to track down the guilty player... Before the imposter blends in and escapes!
- EASY TO LEARN, QUICK TO PLAY: Like all good family board games, it takes 2 minutes to learn and only 15 minutes to play. Recommended for 3-8 players and ages 12+
- MULTI-AWARD WINNING: "Best Party Game" At UK games expo. "Seal of excellence" From dice tower games. A perfect board game for adults and teenagers
The distinction is useful beyond this particular candle: when an animated shape should bend around a fixed contact point, transforming it around an anchored base preserves the connection that tells the viewer where it is attached.
Why the ending messages matter
The two death messages name the cause of failure rather than presenting a generic game-over. One says the wind tore the flame off the wick; the other says the player smothered it. Together with the visual cues, those messages teach the game’s central trade-off without a separate tutorial: shielding helps against wind, but excessive shielding causes a different loss.

Pablo asks players to report where the game stops feeling fair; the request focuses feedback on the balance between warning, difficulty, and failure.
