If your HTML drag-and-drop target never receives a usable drop, the most common fix is to cancel dragover. A page has to signal that it will accept the drag; without that signal, the browser’s drag-and-drop processing sets the current operation to none.
Why the browser rejects a drop
In the HTML drag-and-drop model, a custom drop target opts in by canceling the dragover event. Add a listener to the target and call event.preventDefault() when the dragged item is acceptable. If you do not cancel the event, the browser treats the operation as unavailable, so releasing over the target will not complete the custom drop.

This behavior is specified by the WHATWG HTML Living Standard’s drag-and-drop processing model. It is not enough to style an element as a drop zone: the event handler must accept the drag.

A minimal target can cancel both events, choose a visual operation through dropEffect, and read the payload when the user releases the drag:

});Use a supported effect that matches the action your interface intends, such as copy or move. The dragover handler communicates that the target can accept the drag and provides feedback; the drop handler gets the final opportunity to accept or reject it and, if accepted, must perform the application’s operation. Canceling drop indicates acceptance to the drag source, which can use the resulting dropEffect.
The identifier in the example is only a lookup value, not proof that the requested operation is safe. Validate dragged data and confirm that the referenced item is one the user is allowed to move or copy before changing application state.

Why you cannot read the payload while hovering
The drag data store is deliberately protected during intermediate drag events. While handling events such as dragover, code can inspect the available formats and item kinds, but cannot read the payload itself. The data store is read/write during dragstart and read-only during drop. This prevents a page from reading dragged content merely because a user passes it over that page. Read the data in the drop handler rather than trying to fetch it during hover.

Highlighting a target is a visual concern; it does not accept the drag. Keep the acceptance logic in dragover, and manage highlight state separately. One practical technique is to check event.relatedTarget in dragleave: if the pointer has moved into a child that is still inside the drop zone, avoid removing the highlight. This can prevent flicker as the pointer crosses nested elements, though exact event sequences can vary across environments.

Plan a separate interaction for touch
Do not assume native HTML drag-and-drop will provide the same interaction on every touch device. If users need to reorder items by touch, consider a Pointer Events implementation or a drag-and-drop library, and test the browsers and devices your application supports. Treat native drag-and-drop as one input path rather than the only way to complete an essential task.

If drops still do nothing
- Confirm the listener is attached to the element actually under the pointer when the drag is released.
- Check that
dragovercallspreventDefault()for the item and state you intend to accept. - Make sure the
drophandler is attached and that it reads data at drop time, not while hovering. - Verify that the handler accepts the operation and performs the intended application change; canceling the event alone does not implement that change.
- Test nested target elements, because entering a child may trigger
dragleaveand affect hover styling. - For touch-based workflows, test on the actual target devices and provide an interaction that does not depend solely on native drag-and-drop.
