Chrome could be using some of your Android phone’s storage, but you can’t assume it is the cause of a low-storage warning. Start by deleting only Chrome’s cached images and files; if that does not help enough, check Chrome downloads and Android’s storage categories. Google lists clearing cache and cookies as one way to free local storage, but does not promise a specific amount of space back.
Clear Chrome’s cache without deleting other browsing data
Chrome’s cached images and files are temporary copies of web resources. Removing them is a targeted first step when you want to make room without clearing unrelated categories such as passwords or browsing history.

- Open Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap More, then Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range. Open the additional data options if needed to see the available categories.
- Select Cached images and files, check that you have not selected other categories you want to keep, then tap Delete data.
Google’s Chrome instructions for deleting browsing data on Android describe the categories and process. Labels can shift as Chrome updates. If Chrome displays a notice about data saved to your Google Account, read it before confirming: deleting account-saved data can affect signed-in devices.
Choose the cleanup option that matches what you want to remove

Use Android Settings only if you prefer the system-level cache control
Open your device’s Settings, find Chrome in the app list, and open its storage controls. Choose Clear cache if that option is available. The exact path varies by Android version and manufacturer.

Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage (which may also be labeled Clear data). Google explains the distinction in its Android guidance on freeing space: clearing cache removes temporary data, while clearing storage permanently deletes all app data.
Check Chrome downloads if the warning remains
Downloaded files are separate from browsing cache, so clearing the cache does not remove them. In Chrome, open More, then Downloads. Review the list and delete only files you no longer need. See Google’s instructions for managing downloads in Chrome.

Inspect Android storage before deleting more
If Chrome’s cache and unwanted downloads were not enough, use your phone’s storage view to find where space is actually going. Open Settings > Storage and review the categories shown on your device. Then consider large downloads or media and apps you no longer use, removing only items you recognize and want to discard. Android’s storage cleanup guidance covers reviewing files and freeing device space. It also describes copying files to a computer with a USB cable if you want to move files rather than delete them.

Google identifies clearing cache and cookies as a way to free local storage space on your device. That is a possible benefit, not a guarantee of how much space your phone will recover. The cited guidance gives no measured amount, and it does not establish that Chrome is the source of any particular storage shortage.

- Cached files help sites load resources again. After removing them, some pages may take longer to load or may download images and other resources again.
- Cookies and site data are different from cached images and files. Removing them can affect website state and sign-ins. Chrome also lists separate categories for passwords, autofill data, site settings and history, so select only what you mean to delete.
- Storage and memory are not the same. Storage holds files and app data; memory is used to run programs. If Chrome is slow or pages crash, closing tabs and other apps may help with memory pressure, but it does not remove persistent files from device storage.
