I can’t honestly claim that I proved this with a factory reset: the available information does not include my phone model, reset date, app counts, or which apps I chose to reinstall. What I can say is that a reset creates a useful chance to reassess your app list. Instead of automatically restoring every app, you can add apps back when a real need arises—after protecting any data you cannot afford to lose.
What a factory reset does to your apps
A factory reset removes installed apps and stored data from the phone. Android’s explainer, published July 24, 2025, says that “all accounts, installed apps, and stored data are completely removed from the device.” Read the Android factory reset explainer for that overview.

A reset does not necessarily mean starting with no apps at all. During setup, you may be able to restore information from a Google Account backup. But restoration is not a perfect copy of the old phone: Google Android Help cautions, “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” Check Google’s backup and restore guidance and the app’s own instructions before relying on a backup to preserve important information.

The title’s personal claim needs a before-and-after inventory to substantiate it: the device and Android version, the date of the reset, how many apps were installed before and afterward, and which apps were restored or deliberately added again. Those details aren’t established here, so I won’t invent a count or pretend to have tested a particular phone.

The useful idea is the decision rule, not a universal “minimum app list.” Treat setup as an opportunity to install an app when a task actually calls for it, rather than restoring everything by default. That is a practical approach, not a recommendation from Google, and it may not suit every person or workflow.
Protect important data before resetting
Do not use an app-count experiment as a reason to risk irreplaceable data or get locked out of accounts. Google recommends backing up first and checking that you know the Google Account credentials and the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password associated with the phone. - Identify app data you cannot replace, such as locally stored files or information that may not be included in a device backup.
- Check each relevant app’s backup, export, or account-sync options. Do not assume that restoring the app also restores its settings or data.
- Make sure you can sign back into essential accounts, including any app that requires separate authentication or recovery steps.
- Confirm your phone’s model-specific reset procedure before starting. Menu labels and reset steps differ by manufacturer and Android version.
Reinstall apps according to actual need
After setup, you can choose what to add rather than treating the previous app list as a required checklist. For each app you miss, ask:
- Do I have a real task for it? Reinstall it when you need the function, not just because it used to be on the phone.
- Is the data safe? If the app holds information you need, verify its backup or sync status before depending on it again.
- Can something I already use do the job? An existing app or a browser may be enough for an occasional task, though that depends on your workflow.
- Are its permissions appropriate? Android can automatically reset permissions for apps that have not been used in a while. Google’s Android privacy and permissions overview and Google Play’s Data safety information can help you review access and data practices; neither decides for you whether the app is worth keeping.
Some people may be more concerned about restoring everything quickly than reviewing each app. One Reddit user, for example, asked about resetting a Pixel 8 “with the minimum amount of manual setup possible.” That is an individual example, not evidence about how common that preference is. The trade-off is personal: restoring can reduce setup work, while selective installation gives you a chance to notice what you actually use.

Reset steps depend on the phone
Google says most Android phones can be reset through Settings, but the exact route varies. Follow the instructions for your manufacturer and model rather than assuming a menu path from another phone will match. Google’s reset guidance points readers to manufacturer support for device-specific directions.
