Possibly, but this reported case is not fully verified. A German VALORANT player said a secondhand AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D triggered a hardware restriction linked to its previous owner. Riot anti-cheat lead Phillip Koskinas disputed key details: he said hardware bans last no more than four months, apply only to the game where cheating was detected, and do not cause Vanguard to denylist every other component in a PC. Riot has not publicly confirmed the buyer’s specific support exchange or what happened to that CPU.
What happened in the reported case?
According to Dexerto’s account, a Reddit user posting as After-Cartoonist-196 on the German-language PCBaumeister forum said they bought a used Ryzen 7 5800X3D on September 21, 2026. VALORANT had worked with their previous processor, they reportedly said, but stopped working after the CPU swap.

The buyer said Riot support told them the processor’s hardware identifier had been restricted on August 12, 2026, because its former owner had cheated. They also reportedly said support told them other parts, including the motherboard and storage, were flagged. These are claims relayed through press coverage, not independently confirmed findings about the former owner, support exchange, or restriction.

ComputerBase reports that the processor itself functioned technically and the reported problem arose when VALORANT launched. That does not establish a defective CPU, nor does it independently prove why the game stopped.

What did Riot say about hardware bans?
ComputerBase quoted Riot anti-cheat lead Phillip Koskinas from a post dated October 2, 2026: “Hardware bans last 4 months maximum, they apply only to the game cheats were detected in, and we don’t ban “everything else” when we match one component. Support will give you the time remaining on request.”
Koskinas also reportedly said he could not find a support ticket matching the details described and called the story “pretty unlikely.” His comments challenge important parts of the account, but they do not amount to a public, case-specific review that establishes exactly what happened to this buyer.

How the account and Riot’s position differ
| Question | Buyer’s reported account | Riot anti-cheat lead’s reported position |
|---|---|---|
| Did the restriction follow the CPU? | The buyer said support attributed the restriction to the used processor’s identifier and its previous owner. The individual attribution is unverified. | Koskinas disputed the account’s plausibility, but the quoted comments do not provide a case-specific finding. |
| Were other PC parts restricted too? | The buyer reportedly said support mentioned the motherboard and storage. | Koskinas said Vanguard does not denylist “everything else” when it matches one component. |
| How long can a hardware ban last? | The reported restriction was said to have started August 12, 2026. | Koskinas said hardware bans last four months maximum. If the reported start date is accurate, that maximum would put the end around mid-December 2026; it is not a confirmed expiration date for this case. |
| Does it apply across games? | The buyer’s account concerned VALORANT. | Koskinas said a hardware ban applies only to the game in which cheating was detected. |
What Riot’s official policy says—and does not say
Riot’s VALORANT support article, dated May 31, 2026, describes Vanguard as “Our anti-cheat and security software that runs perpetually to block cheat software and detect cheat hardware.” It says cheating with auto-clickers, aimbots, or other unauthorized hardware or software that gives an unfair advantage results in a permanent account ban.
That is general policy, not confirmation of this reported incident. The support article does not explain Vanguard’s precise hardware-identification method, establish that this processor was restricted, or resolve whether any other components were affected. A permanent account ban for cheating should also not be confused with the temporary hardware-ban duration Koskinas described.

How common are inherited hardware restrictions?
ComputerBase attributed to Koskinas a figure of fewer than a dozen cases in which a hardware restriction affected a new owner through a used component. The report does not specify the period covered or how the cases were counted, so this is not an incidence rate or a basis for estimating the odds of buying a restricted part.

- Ask Riot Support for the remaining time. Koskinas said support will provide the time left on a hardware ban when asked.
- Describe the sequence clearly. Include when the game stopped launching, which component was changed, and the support response you received. This helps support assess your particular account and system; it does not establish a public hardware-status lookup.
- Do not assume a hardware or software workaround will clear the restriction. The available reporting does not establish that a receipt, CPU diagnostic, Windows reinstall, or account change can reveal or remove a hardware restriction.
The sources do not establish a buyer-facing way to check a used CPU’s Vanguard status before purchase. They also do not show that purchasing another Ryzen 7 5800X3D would clear a restriction tied to a previously used unit.
