An older computer that struggles with demanding desktop work may still be useful as a focused home or small-office server. Linux can put it to work serving network boot files, organizing ebooks, or checking backups—but suitability depends on the machine, the service, and how you configure it. These eight projects are practical starting points, not guaranteed performance claims or universal hardware requirements.
1. Boot computers over the network with a PXE server
A PXE boot server provides installation or rescue environments to compatible computers over your local network. It can save you from preparing a separate USB installer every time you need to install or repair a machine.

You will need to configure the network boot service and ensure the client computers’ firmware supports and is set up for network boot. A USB drive can still be a useful fallback for recovery, but it is optional rather than a requirement for this project.
2. Make an ebook library available in a browser
Calibre-Web can provide a browser-accessible interface to an ebook collection. Calibre’s official content-server documentation describes access from other devices on the same home network and explains how to run the server as a systemd service on a modern systemd Linux system.

Calibre says its content server does not need a running X server, although some linked components still require X libraries to be installed. Its documentation also advises that the service generally should not run as root. This is a Calibre-specific setup detail, not a blanket rule for every Linux service.
3. Host a password manager with Vaultwarden
Vaultwarden is a self-hosted password-manager option for people who want to manage credentials through a service on their own hardware. Because it handles sensitive data, security and maintenance matter more than raw processing power.
- Keep the service updated and maintain backups.
- Decide deliberately how clients will reach it; limiting access to your home network avoids casually exposing it to the public internet.
- Plan for the computer and service to be available when you need your passwords.
Self-hosting does not remove the need to secure the server, network, and stored data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Keep a local archive of Linux packages
A local package archive can retain software packages that are useful when maintaining several Linux systems. It may reduce repeated downloads or keep particular package versions available, depending on how you configure and use it.
Storage needs depend on which repositories and versions you retain; there is no single capacity figure that applies to every setup. An external hard drive is one optional way to add storage if the PC’s internal drive is insufficient, but existing network storage may already meet the need.
5. Use an SSH bastion host for internal machines
An SSH bastion host provides a single, controlled route to other machines on your network. Rather than connecting directly to each internal system from elsewhere, an administrator can connect through the bastion and then reach the intended machine.
This is a network-administration project, not a reason to expose SSH without secure configuration. Decide which users and machines should be able to connect, and set up access deliberately before relying on the host.

6. Run scheduled automation and scripts
A spare Linux PC can run scheduled workflows, make API calls, respond to webhooks, or execute scripts that you want to keep running independently of your everyday computer. Examples might include a routine task that checks a service or processes information on a schedule.

The workload depends on what the automation does: a small script and a demanding workflow are not equivalent. If a task must run at a particular time or respond promptly, the PC needs to be powered on and connected when that work is due.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Test whether backups can actually be restored
A backup job completing successfully does not, by itself, prove that the data can be recovered. A dedicated machine can periodically restore selected data and check that the result is usable, giving you a way to test recovery rather than merely record that a backup ran.
Restoration tests need somewhere to put the recovered data, so storage requirements depend on what you restore and retain. An external hard drive is an optional destination if you do not already have suitable storage; size it for the data and tests you actually plan to keep.
8. Monitor check-ins with a heartbeat service
A heartbeat monitor, sometimes described as an internet dead man’s switch, watches for expected check-ins. If a device or scheduled job stops sending them, the service can notify you or trigger a workflow.
Choose the response carefully. A missed check-in can be caused by a temporary network or device problem, so do not let one absent signal trigger an irreversible action. The monitoring PC must remain available to receive and evaluate check-ins.
How to choose a project for your old PC
Start with the problem you want to solve, then consider what the service needs to retain and how it will be reached. These projects do not have a common performance rating or a universal minimum hardware specification.
- For a one-time or occasional task: a package archive or backup restoration test may suit you, provided you have enough storage for the files and versions you choose to keep.
- For a service you use regularly: an ebook library, password manager, bastion host, automation runner, or heartbeat monitor is more useful when the PC and network are reliably available.
- For network boot: check that your clients support PXE and account for the network configuration before choosing it.
- For sensitive or remote access: prioritize careful access controls and security configuration over adding more services to the machine.
The eight ideas come from Umair Khurshid’s September 17, 2026, How-To Geek article, syndicated by Yahoo Tech. They are project concepts, not results from comparative benchmarks or controlled tests; the right fit depends on your hardware, workload, network, and retained data.
