Yes. Google documents an official way for developers and advanced users to unlock a Googlebook’s bootloader, but the process erases all device data and disables device security. Magisk support was reported as in development on October 5, 2026; that report does not confirm a public release, supported models, or a usable root procedure.
What bootloader unlocking does—and who needs it
Google says a developer or advanced user can unlock a Googlebook’s bootloader to install a custom operating system or test an app. The Google Help Center also says, “Most users don’t need to unlock their Googlebook’s bootloader.” Unlocking is a device-modification step, not a prerequisite for ordinary use.

Google warns that unlocking erases all data on the device and disables device security. Google does not support modifications; they may cause hardware, software, or security problems and may void the warranty. Back up anything important before proceeding, and do not start unless you accept those consequences.

The final confirmation triggers the data wipe and disables device security. Do not treat this as a reversible settings toggle that preserves your files.

Not on the evidence currently confirmed. On October 5, 2026, 9to5Google reported that Magisk developer John Wu said Googlebook support was “in the works” and still needed platform-specific tweaks. The same report relayed Wu’s description of Googlebook as “the ideal platform for Android modding.”

“In the works” describes development, not a released, supported root method. The available report does not establish that Googlebook-specific Magisk code or instructions have been published, which models are compatible, or that a complete root procedure works. A bootloader unlock alone does not prove Magisk can root a particular device. Check for current release notes and device-specific instructions from the Magisk developer before attempting root; do not rely on a generic Android rooting guide.

What to verify before you proceed
- Confirm that your exact Googlebook model supports the official bootloader-unlock option; the cited instructions do not establish model-by-model compatibility.
- Back up your data and make sure you understand that unlocking erases it and disables device security.
- If your goal is Magisk root, confirm that a public release and instructions explicitly support your model. The October 5, 2026 report alone is not that confirmation.
- Consider Google’s warning that unsupported modifications can create hardware, software, or security issues and may void the warranty.
