The roughly 12 GB recovery reported in coverage is an estimate, not a guaranteed result: the amount depends on which models are installed, and macOS may take time to delete released files.
What RemoveMacAI does—and what the 12 GB figure means
RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile to turn off selected Apple Intelligence features, then uses Apple’s asset service to release downloaded models. It also redirects model downloads to help prevent macOS from immediately downloading them again. The project says it does not directly modify files in /System and leaves System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled. These are the project’s descriptions of its approach, not an independent security audit.

MacRumors reported on October 5, 2026, that the tool could free roughly 12 GB, depending on the models present. Ars Technica reported the developer’s estimate of about 12 GB and noted reports of model storage exceeding 30 GB. Those are reported estimates and user reports—not Apple-published figures, a universal measurement, or a promise of how much space any particular Mac will recover. The actual amount varies by machine.

Before deciding, check the Mac’s current storage view. MacRumors describes this path:

- Select General, then Storage.
- Select the information button beside macOS to inspect the displayed storage details.
The display may not update immediately after using the tool. RemoveMacAI says the asset service can release models before macOS deletes the corresponding files on its own schedule, so the Storage figure may lag.

Removing the models means giving up more than Siri’s Apple Intelligence responses. According to the project, the affected features include:

Dictation remains available because its speech models are separate and are not removed. You can also use the tool’s option to turn off features while keeping named features enabled; check its current documentation for the supported feature names and syntax.

Compatibility and version checks
As listed on the project repository reviewed October 7, 2026, RemoveMacAI requires Apple silicon and supports macOS 27; macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. The project says macOS 27.0.1 requires version 0.2.3 or later. These details can change, so check the RemoveMacAI repository and its current release notes before installing or running it.

There is also a macOS behavior caveat. MacRumors reported that Apple deprecated configuration-profile restriction keys used by the tool in macOS 26.4, although they still worked on macOS 27.0.1 at the time of its report. A later macOS update could change how those restrictions behave.
How to use it cautiously
RemoveMacAI is a command-line utility, so follow the installation and command syntax in the project’s current README rather than copying instructions for a different removal tool or macOS version. Its documented capabilities include checking feature status and model sizes, running a dry run, disabling features while keeping named ones enabled, and reverting changes. The project notes that sizes the asset service cannot report appear as “unknown.”

Review the proposed changes with the dry-run option before applying them, and confirm that the feature loss is acceptable. If you want to recover only some storage while retaining particular capabilities, use the documented keep-feature option and verify the resulting status. The repository is the source for current commands and exact feature names; do not assume a command shown for an older release still applies.

The repository documents removemacai revert as the way to undo its changes. It says removing the profile restores previous settings, and macOS can download models again when a feature needs them. Treat this as the project’s documented recovery path, not a guarantee about every future macOS release.

Apple explains that SIP helps prevent potentially malicious software from modifying protected system files and folders. Keeping SIP enabled is useful, but it does not by itself establish that a third-party tool is risk-free. See Apple’s explanation of System Integrity Protection.
Don’t confuse RemoveMacAI with an older remover
RemoveMacAI is not the same project as apple-intelligence-remover, which GitHub marks as archived on August 21, 2026. That older project’s README describes direct deletion attempts against known asset and cache paths, possible permission or SIP failures, and no automatic restoration. RemoveMacAI’s README instead describes using Apple’s asset service, so instructions and risks for one should not be attributed to the other.
