In a review published August 28, 2026, Tom’s Guide’s Peter Wolinski said he used the 32L and 50L models for several months across hikes, camping, travel, flights and commuting. He praised their comfort, adjustability, storage and weight distribution, while flagging their high price and the lack of an included waterproof cover. An independent review of the 60L model found a less comfortable experience under a heavy load.
What the summer of use found
Wolinski’s Tom’s Guide review covered the Skala 32L and 50L over several months and across more than hiking alone. His verdict was favorable: he highlighted comfort, substantial storage, adjustability, build quality and weight distribution, and recommended the packs for single- and multi-day trips. He summed up the trade-off this way: “It might be pricey, but the Yeti Skala backpack makes up for its cost with copious adjustability, excellent weight distribution and supreme comfort.”

That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every size will carry well for every hiker. Outside’s review, which focused on the 60L and also tested the 32L, praised capacity, organization and materials but described the 60L as heavy and less comfortable than similar packs. With a 33 lb overnight load, the reviewer reported that it leaned backward and pulled on their shoulders after a few hours. Pack size, adjustment, load and individual fit all matter when interpreting those different impressions.
Which Skala size fits the trip?
YETI positions the 32L and 40L for day hikes, while the 50L and 60L are intended for longer trips. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications and intended uses, not independent measurements.

Prices are YETI’s US catalog listings accessed October 7, 2026, and may change. Choose by the gear and trip you actually expect to carry rather than capacity alone: a larger pack adds room but also weight. The 50L’s dedicated sleeping-bag compartment may suit overnight gear; the 40L is the step-up option for a longer day out.
Fit, carry comfort and organization
YETI lists an AlumaLite frame, load lifters, padded contoured straps and a vented mesh back panel among the Skala’s features. The company says its harness adjusts by up to eight inches. It also highlights RipZip access and internal and external pockets. These are manufacturer descriptions; the more useful practical test is whether the loaded pack sits securely and distributes weight comfortably on your body.

The contrast between Wolinski’s favorable carry assessment on the 32L and 50L and Outside’s report of backward pull and shoulder discomfort with a 33 lb load on the 60L is a reason to try the intended size with a representative load if possible. Pay attention to how the harness sits, whether the load feels stable, and whether access to frequently used items works for the way you hike. Outside also noted limited organization while moving, so pocket layout may matter more to some hikers than to others.
Weather protection and useful compatibility details
YETI describes the Skala as water-resistant, not completely waterproof. The Tom’s Guide review also notes that a waterproof cover is not included. For sustained rain or gear that must stay dry, plan on separate protection; the available information does not establish a particular compatible cover.

YETI says most hydration reservoirs up to 3L should fit. Its FAQ also identifies compatibility with a 34 oz Yonder bottle, a 36 oz Rambler bottle and YETI packing cubes. These are compatibility statements, not independent accessory tests.
Can you fly with a Skala?
YETI says the 32L and 40L should fit in most overhead bins, while the 50L is unlikely to be accepted by most airlines as a carry-on. “Most” does not override an airline’s rules: check the current size limits and carry-on policy for your specific flight, and account for the pack’s dimensions when full.

Price and value
In the US catalog accessed October 7, 2026, listed Skala prices ranged from $300 for the 32L to $400 for the 60L, with the 40L at $325 and 50L at $375. These are dated listing prices, not guaranteed checkout prices. Tom’s Guide also identified cost as a drawback in its August 2026 review. The case for paying more rests on the features and favorable comfort reports, but the Outside account shows that loaded carry comfort is not uniform across sizes or users.
Care, hardware and warranty
YETI’s FAQ recommends wiping the pack with a wet cloth and advises against removing parts other than the internal yoke adjuster. It says most buckles and hardware are replaceable and lists a three-year limited warranty. Check the warranty terms for the applicable region and purchase before relying on coverage.
