What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your Windows 11 screen went black after an update, first check what remains visible: a mouse pointer, the sign-in screen, a blinking cursor, or an error message. Those clues point to different problems, and the timing alone does not prove the update caused the failure. Start with the least disruptive fix that matches what you see; use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if Windows will not start.
What does the black screen show?
Microsoft notes that a blank screen can occur for several reasons. After an update, an incompatible driver or an incomplete update is possible, but neither is certain from the symptom alone. Microsoft’s blank-screen guide distinguishes several patterns:

- Black screen with cursor after update: A stalled Windows process or a driver problem may be involved.
- Blank screen at sign-in: Display-output configuration or a corrupted user profile may be a factor.
- Blinking cursor: UEFI/BIOS may not be finding a boot device, so this can be a startup problem rather than a desktop display issue.
- Error message or stop code: Follow Microsoft’s separate unexpected-restart and stop-code guidance, rather than treating it as an ordinary blank screen.
If Windows update completed but the screen is black and you can still reach the desktop through a visible cursor, try the Explorer step below. If Windows never starts, skip to the WinRE section.
Black screen with cursor after update: restart Windows Explorer
A visible cursor can mean Windows is running but the desktop shell has not appeared. Try restarting Windows Explorer using Microsoft’s instructions:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart.
- If it is not listed, in Task Manager select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, then select OK.
If the desktop remains black, move on to Safe Mode and check the graphics driver.
Use Safe Mode to check the graphics driver
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of essential services and drivers. If the black screen does not recur there, that can help narrow the cause, though it does not by itself identify the exact fault. Microsoft’s route to Safe Mode is Recovery Mode > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart; after the restart, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
In Safe Mode, inspect the graphics driver:
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Open the graphics device’s properties and, if the problem began after a driver update and the option is available, choose Roll Back Driver.
- Restart normally and check whether the display returns.
If you cannot reach Recovery Mode from Windows, use one of the WinRE entry routes below.

How to enter WinRE if Windows will not start
WinRE is Windows’ recovery environment. It may start automatically after repeated failed starts. If Windows is accessible, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup and choose to restart now. You can also start a PC from Windows installation media and select Repair my PC.
Microsoft also documents reaching Automatic Repair by interrupting normal boot twice: turn on the PC, and when the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button to shut it down. Repeat once. On the next start, Windows should enter Automatic Repair, where you can select Advanced options. Do not keep repeating forced shutdowns beyond this procedure.
Before using recovery tools, back up important data if you can. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key available; Microsoft says it is needed for most WinRE options. For more about available paths, see Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

How to uninstall a Windows update if Windows won’t start
If the problem began after a recent update, Microsoft says uninstalling it might fix the issue. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the available update-removal option. Microsoft says this option does not affect personal files or apps, but some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can increase security risk, so consider that trade-off before proceeding.

Which WinRE recovery option should you choose?
Choose the tool that fits the failure and start with the least disruptive applicable option. These tools address different problems and do not guarantee a fix.
| Option | Best fit | Effect on files and apps | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Updates | The problem started after a recent update. | Microsoft says personal files and apps are not affected. | Some updates cannot be removed; removing a security update has risks. |
| Startup Repair | Windows cannot start and the cause may be a general startup fault. | Not stated in Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance. | Scans for common problems and attempts repairs, but may not fix every failure. |
| System Restore | A suitable restore point is available and system files or settings may need to be rolled back. | Rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. | Availability depends on whether a suitable restore point exists. |
| Point-in-time restore | The feature is available on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and a restore point is suitable. | Can affect apps, settings, and personal files created or changed after the selected point. | Check the date of the point and understand its broader effect before confirming. |
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery options have not resolved the problem. | You can choose whether to keep personal files or remove everything; apps and settings may also be affected. | Back up first. During reset, the display can remain black for a long time—occasionally upwards of 15 minutes—and the device may restart. Microsoft warns that manually restarting during the process could cause reset failure. |
| Reinstall from installation media | A reset or other recovery option is not suitable or has failed. | Reinstalling from generic installation media removes everything. | Back up first. Microsoft says OEM recovery media may offer better compatibility because it can include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps. |
Run Startup Repair for a general boot problem
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a built-in tool for problems that prevent Windows from starting. It checks for common issues such as damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, incompatible drivers, and registry errors, then attempts repairs. If it does not resolve the failure, use the findings it reports to choose what to try next.

Consider restore options only when their impact fits
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. Point-in-time restore is limited to Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance, and may affect personal files as well as apps and settings changed after the selected point. Check which restore feature is offered and read its confirmation details before continuing.
Reset or reinstall only as later steps
Reset this PC offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything; that choice does not make a reset risk-free, so back up first. A reinstall from generic Windows installation media removes everything. If Windows cannot start, Microsoft documents creating bootable installation media on another working PC and using it to start the affected device. A USB flash drive is one way to carry that media; Microsoft does not establish a specific capacity or model here. For a reinstall, check whether the PC manufacturer offers recovery media, which may include device-specific drivers and factory apps.
