How to use Sound Amplifier on Android
- Install or open Google Sound Amplifier, then connect wired or Bluetooth headphones.
- Open the app and adjust its controls for your setting. Depending on the setup, these include noise reduction, quiet-sound boost, frequency boost, and left/right settings.
- On Pixel 3 or later, use Conversation mode to focus on a conversation partner’s voice.
Google notes that some Bluetooth headphones can add delay or reduce audio quality. If that happens, try another pair or switch to wired headphones that work with your phone’s connection. With Bluetooth headphones, some controls can also behave differently than they do for audio playing from the phone.
The Google Play listing specifies Android 8.1 or later and requires headphones. Phone and feature availability can vary by manufacturer and region, so confirm that the app and the controls you need are available on your device.

How to turn on Live Listen on Apple devices
With a Made for iPhone hearing device
- Connect the compatible hearing device to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices.
- Select your connected device, then choose Start Live Listen.
- Place the Apple device near the person speaking. Its microphone picks up sound and sends it to the connected hearing device.
With supported headphones
Apple also lists AirPods and supported Beats headphones as Live Listen destinations. The exact supported models and availability may change, so check Apple’s current compatibility information for your device and headphones before setup.
What these features can—and can’t—do
Sound Amplifier and Live Listen can route amplified or microphone-picked-up sound to a listening accessory. They may help when you want to hear a nearby speaker or surrounding sounds, but amplification does not guarantee clear speech in every environment. Your phone, microphone placement, accessory, background noise, and audio delay all affect what you hear.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust describes smartphone apps as a possible temporary aid and says hearing aids are the best option for long-term hearing loss. If difficulty hearing persists, seek individualized hearing care rather than relying on a phone feature as treatment.
Check privacy disclosures before using a microphone feature
Google Play’s Sound Amplifier listing says microphone access is used to process audio and that no data is collected or stored. The listing separately says the accessibility service can observe actions, window content, and typed text. Review the current app permissions and privacy disclosures on your device before enabling access.
