The xTool M2 is a desktop craft machine with distinct laser and inkjet workflows—not a single laser that handles every material. Its documented options include 10W or 20W blue-diode modules for cutting and engraving, a 3W infrared module for engraving selected metals, and a CMYK inkjet module for printing. xTool publishes the specifications and cutting capacities below; those figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
Which xTool M2 configuration fits your project?
Choose by process first. The laser modules and inkjet module do different jobs, and xTool says modules from other xTool devices are not compatible with the M2. Confirm the exact module and package before buying or planning a project.

For a 10W or 20W configuration, the M2 User Guide lists a 426 × 320 mm processing area. It lists 426 × 312 mm for a 40W configuration, while the FAQ also discusses the 3W infrared module. Check the current package and documentation rather than assuming every listed module is included or currently offered in your region. The guide gives the machine’s footprint as 610 × 569 × 180 mm, its weight as 12.3 kg, and maximum XY speed as 600 mm/s. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from a hands-on test. How thick can the M2 cut?
xTool’s FAQ says a 10W module can cut up to 8 mm-thick basswood plywood in one pass, and a 20W module can cut up to 10 mm-thick basswood plywood in one pass. These are company-stated capacities for basswood plywood, not independently verified results or guarantees for other woods, materials, or finishes. Actual cutting depends on the workpiece and settings.

What materials are unsuitable, and what safety controls does it have?
xTool describes the M2 as a Class 1 laser device when used in its normal enclosed operating configuration. It says interlock switches stop the laser if the protective cover is opened or the baseplate is removed. Class 1 in that setup does not make every material or operating condition safe; follow the current M2 Safety First instructions.
Do not use the blue-diode module on highly reflective surfaces that can return the beam. xTool specifically warns against mirror-finish metal, unoxidized aluminum, copper, and mirror-finish stainless steel. Its safety instructions cite ANSI Z136.1-2022, IEC 60825-1:2014, and EN 60825-1:2014/A11:2021 as reference standards; those references should not be read as approval for every material, accessory, workspace, or misuse scenario.

xTool says the machine has a built-in air pump, so a separate air-assist system is not necessary. Its FAQ recommends placing protective material on the baseplate and avoiding flammable or highly reflective pads. The M2 does not include the M1 Ultra’s cutting mat. For exhaust, the product page recommends a Desktop Air Purifier for regular laser use and AP2 for frequent cutting or materials with stronger odors; that is xTool’s recommendation, not an independently measured filtration comparison. How do setup, positioning, and software work?
The M2 guide describes close-view and distance-view cameras for positioning. xTool’s FAQ identifies xTool Studio software, USB and Wi-Fi communication, and Windows and macOS support. The guide summary and FAQ differ in how they present camera resolution labels, so verify the exact camera information in the current guide for your configuration rather than relying on a generalized megapixel figure.

Before committing material, consult xTool’s M2 Material Cheat Sheet for Beginners and current safety guidance. A material name alone is not enough to establish that a particular thickness, coating, or finish is suitable.

- Process: Decide whether your work requires blue-diode cutting and engraving, infrared engraving, CMYK printing, or a combination of separate workflows.
- Materials: Check the actual composition, thickness, and finish against the module’s documented uses and safety instructions.
- Workspace: Compare the work area for the specific module with your largest intended project; the laser configurations do not all share the same area.
- Positioning and software: Confirm that the camera workflow, xTool Studio, and USB or Wi-Fi connection suit your setup and operating system.
- Ventilation and accessories: Plan for exhaust and check compatibility for every accessory. The FAQ lists selected compatible modules and accessories but explicitly excludes a riser base, conveyor feeder, and honeycomb panel.
- Package contents: Confirm which module and accessories are included in the current regional listing; the product page is dynamic.
The M2’s documented focus is laser processing with an optional CMYK inkjet workflow. xTool contrasts it with the M1 Ultra, which it describes as combining laser cutting, blade cutting, pen drawing, and hot foiling. That distinction is useful if you need those other processes, but the better fit depends on your materials and workflow—not a blanket model ranking.
