You can use Chromecast to listen without watching video, but the right method depends on what you own: Chromecast Audio connects directly to speakers, a video Chromecast plays through the TV or its audio system, and Android or Chrome can send audio to compatible Cast speakers.
Choose the audio route that fits your setup

Use Chromecast Audio with a speaker or receiver
Chromecast Audio was designed to add Cast playback to audio equipment. Connect it to a speaker or receiver with a compatible cable, connect its USB power cable to the included power supply, and complete setup in Google Home. Then cast audio from a supported phone, tablet, or computer app. Google lists music, radio channels, and podcasts among the content it can play.
Choose a connection your equipment supports. Google documents 3.5 mm or RCA analog connections and optical output. For analog setups, the Chromecast Audio sound settings warn against enabling Full Dynamic Range on common desktop, docking, portable, or Bluetooth speaker systems that are not designed for it: volume may become excessive and sound may distort. Optical connections always use Full Dynamic Range.

Chromecast Audio is a legacy device in the cited Google documentation, which does not establish current retail availability. If you are considering one, confirm its condition, required cable, and compatibility with your speaker or receiver rather than assuming it is available new.
Cast all Android audio to a compatible speaker
For system-wide phone or tablet audio, open the Google Home app and use its “Cast my audio” control to select a compatible receiving device. Google specifies Android 8.0 or later for these app controls. Your mobile device and receiver must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and Google Play Services needs microphone permission. Google also cautions that power-saving mode can affect performance.

This particular full-device audio-casting method is not supported on iOS or Windows. If you have an iPhone or iPad, check whether the audio app itself offers a Cast button; app-level casting is a different route and depends on that app’s support.
Send audio from Chrome on a computer
Cast one tab’s sound
Use Chrome’s tab-casting option when the audio is playing in a browser tab and you want that tab’s sound on a speaker. The tab’s video and images stay on the computer, while its audio plays through the speaker. Sound from other tabs and applications remains on the computer, so this is not system-wide audio routing.

Cast media to a Google speaker or display
Chrome can also cast media to a Google smart speaker or display, including media from services that are not supported in Google Home. The computer and speaker or display need to share a Wi-Fi network. Google’s instructions for casting media from Chrome list Chrome 72 or later and require Local Network access for device discovery on macOS 15 or later.

Having a Chromecast or Cast-enabled speaker does not guarantee that every source can be sent to it. Google says compatible speakers work with most Cast-enabled music and audio apps, but some partner streams may not be available. Its Cast compatibility FAQ also says mobile-stored music is not directly supported by Google Cast as described there. Check for a Cast control in the app you intend to use and confirm that the specific content can be cast.

Speaker groups can combine supported Google speakers, displays, streaming devices, and Pixel Tablets for synchronized media. Google says group creation is not supported on first-generation Chromecast. See Google’s speaker-group instructions for supported devices and setup.

Troubleshoot when audio does not play
- The destination does not appear: Confirm the phone or computer and receiving device use the same Wi-Fi. For Chrome discovery on macOS 15 or later, allow Local Network access.
- Android audio casting will not start: Check the Android version, Google Play Services microphone permission, and whether power-saving mode is interfering.
- A particular song or stream will not cast: Try the service’s own Cast control and confirm the content is supported; app and partner-stream availability can differ.
- Sound is distorted or unexpectedly loud on Chromecast Audio: Check the connection type and Full Dynamic Range setting. Google warns against enabling it for common analog-connected speakers not built for that level.
- A speaker group cannot be created: Check whether the setup includes first-generation Chromecast, which Google excludes from speaker-group creation.
