Yes. The iPhone 11 has a 12-megapixel front-facing TrueDepth camera, which Apple says enables Face ID facial recognition. It is separate from the phone’s two 12-megapixel rear cameras.
What does TrueDepth mean on the iPhone 11?
Apple spells the name “TrueDepth” as one word. On iPhone 11, it identifies the front camera system: a 12MP camera with an ƒ/2.2 aperture. Apple’s specification says Face ID is “Enabled by TrueDepth camera for facial recognition.” Apple’s iPhone 11 technical specifications list it separately from the rear camera system.

That confirms the iPhone 11 supports Face ID through its front TrueDepth camera. The specifications do not establish a particular depth-sensing component configuration or a biometric accuracy figure, so the camera’s listed resolution should not be read as a measure of Face ID performance.

How the TrueDepth camera differs from the rear cameras

Apple lists Portrait mode for both the front TrueDepth camera and the rear camera system. The rear cameras are not the TrueDepth camera; they are a distinct pair of cameras on the back of the phone. These specifications describe camera hardware and supported modes, not comparative image quality.

What can the iPhone 11’s front camera do?
Beyond Face ID, Apple lists these front-camera capabilities:
- Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control
- Six Portrait Lighting effects
- Animoji and Memoji
- Retina Flash
- 4K video recording at 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second
- 1080p slow-motion video at 120 frames per second
These are capabilities Apple lists for the front camera; the resolution and frame-rate specifications do not, by themselves, predict results in every lighting or recording situation.

Does Face ID work when the iPhone 11 is sideways?
Apple’s Face ID guidance says earlier iPhones use Face ID in portrait orientation while you face the TrueDepth camera. The landscape-orientation exception applies to iPhone 13 and later running iOS 16 or later, so it does not apply to iPhone 11. See Apple’s Face ID guidance for the orientation details.
