Yes. The original HTC VIVE uses HDMI as part of its PC connection, with the computer connected to the headset through a link box. But VR headsets do not share one universal video connector: Valve says Index does not support HDMI, and Sony specifies DisplayPort 1.4 for PS VR2 on PC. Check the requirements for the exact headset before choosing a cable or adapter.
What HDMI does in a VR setup
HDMI can carry the video signal in some VR systems, but it may be only one part of the connection. The original HTC VIVE connects to a link box, which also uses USB and power. Other headsets require DisplayPort or a different documented connection. The headset model and the computer or console it is connected to determine what works.

Which examples use HDMI—and which do not?
| Headset or setup | Documented video connection | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Original HTC VIVE | HDMI; HTC also lists HDMI 1.4 among supported PC video outputs. | The PC connects to the link box, and the headset connects to the link box using HDMI, USB, and power cables. HTC’s connection instructions and VIVE specifications describe the setup. |
| Valve Index | HDMI is not supported. | Valve says DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters will not work. See Valve’s Index system requirements. |
| PS VR2 connected to a PC | DisplayPort 1.4 between the PC adapter and computer. | Sony says the cable is sold separately and HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion adapters are unsupported. See Sony’s PS VR2 PC setup information and PC troubleshooting guidance. |
| Original PlayStation VR | HDMI connections are part of its processor-unit setup. | Sony’s troubleshooting routes audio and video through the processor unit and says PS VR does not support HDMI extensions. This console setup is not evidence that PC headsets all connect directly over HDMI. See Sony’s PS VR troubleshooting page. |
How the original HTC VIVE connects
For the original VIVE, the link box sits between the computer and headset. HTC’s instructions specify connecting the link box’s power adapter, connecting its HDMI port to an HDMI port on the computer’s graphics card, and connecting USB to the computer. The headset’s HDMI, USB, and power cables then connect to the matching ports on the link box.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe link box also has a Mini DisplayPort option. HTC says the Mini DisplayPort cable is not included and is intended for a computer without a spare HDMI port or without HDMI support. Check the instructions for your exact VIVE model; do not assume another VIVE generation uses the same connection scheme. HTC’s link box guide explains its ports.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Will an HDMI adapter make a headset work?
Not necessarily. A plug that fits does not prove that an adapter can convert the signal in a way the headset supports. Valve explicitly rules out DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters for Index. Sony says HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion adapters are not supported for PS VR2 on PC. For those models, an adapter is not a documented workaround.
Before connecting a headset, check its manufacturer’s requirements for the exact model and host device. In particular, confirm:

What if your PC has HDMI but not DisplayPort?
Start with the headset’s requirements, not the ports on the cable you already own. The original HTC VIVE’s link box offers an HDMI connection, while Valve says Index needs a supported DisplayPort connection and will not work through DisplayPort-to-HDMI conversion. For PS VR2 on PC, Sony specifies DisplayPort 1.4 and does not support HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion adapters. If your PC lacks the required output, check whether the manufacturer documents another supported connection for your exact setup; do not infer compatibility from an adapter’s shape or label.
