The Sinking City 2 has 22 listed talents, each built around a particular combat trigger or playstyle. You can equip three regular talents and one special talent, so the best choices depend on what is causing trouble: incoming damage, scarce ammunition, reload exposure, or hitting weak points. The effects below are qualitative; the available descriptions do not establish exact percentages.

How talents work in The Sinking City 2

Talents add conditional bonuses to combat, such as extra damage after a kill, reduced harm after a dodge, or improved ammunition crafting. Frogwares says optional exploration can reward a new talent as well as other upgrades, and advises players: “Ammo is scarce and monsters are tough, so explore your options and find what works best.” (Frogwares via Xbox Wire, August 18, 2026.)

Guides describe a Talent Table in safe rooms where you spend Dream Essence and can change equipped talents. In that progression, Basic talents are available at the first table; buying four Basic talents unlocks Intermediate, and buying four Intermediate talents unlocks Advanced. Eldritch Rewards are earned by completing specified game goals. These tier and spending details are guide-reported, while Frogwares independently confirms the exploration connection.

The talent reference lists three regular slots and one special slot. Since the effects are conditional, a talent that sounds powerful can be wasted if its trigger rarely happens in your fights.

All 22 talents and their effects

The effects and suggested fits below paraphrase the guide’s descriptions. Words such as “slightly” and “greatly” are relative descriptions, not measured values.

Talent Effect Best fit
Alchemical Abundance Increases ammunition gained when crafting. When crafted ammo is an important part of your supply.
Butcher’s Zeal Provides a large melee-damage bonus for a short time after a kill. When you can reach another enemy and melee during the bonus.
Carapace of the Damned Slightly reduces damage from humanoid enemies. When humanoids are your main source of incoming harm.
Chitinbound Slightly reduces harm from monsters and aberrations. When creature attacks are draining your health.
Crimson Threshold Increases damage while your health is low. For a high-risk approach that keeps attacking while hurt.
Deathless Vigor Lets Calvin withstand more punishment. For broad survivability.
Feral Surge Slightly increases damage against creatures at close range. When fights regularly bring enemies close.
Gunslinger’s Trance Slightly speeds up weapon swapping. When you rotate between guns rather than reload one weapon.
Inner Beast Increases melee damage when the magazine is empty. When an empty magazine is your cue to melee instead of reload.
Instruments of Death Slightly increases damage for a few seconds after a weapon swap. When you can attack during the short post-swap window.
Opening Gambit Makes the first bullet hit harder. When you reliably open encounters with a deliberate shot.
Pact of the Reaper Heals on a kill but makes incoming wounds more damaging. When you can secure kills quickly and accept greater risk.
Potent Tincture Reduces harm for each healing item carried, up to five items. When you keep a reserve of healing supplies.
Profane Reload Speeds up reloading. When reload downtime leaves you exposed.
Reticle Ritual Increases damage when fully focused and lowers it when unfocused. When you can wait for full focus rather than rush shots.
Ruptured Core Destroying weak spots triggers a large damage burst. When you recognize and reliably hit weak spots.
Silent Hunter Slightly increases damage while the flashlight is off. When you can aim and track threats without constant illumination.
Strange Evasion Reduces harm for a few seconds after dodging. When dodging is a deliberate defensive habit.
Unhallowed Salve Improves recovery from healing items. When healing efficiency matters more than another conditional attack bonus.
Vengeful Spirit After a lethal hit, gives a brief chance to kill the attacker and escape death. When you can identify and eliminate the attacker immediately.
Vessel of Destruction Greatly increases damage while also greatly increasing incoming damage. Only when your positioning and evasion can manage the downside.
Wandering Bullet Increases damage to weak points with unfocused shots. When you prefer quick weak-point shots over waiting for full focus.

Which talents to choose for your playstyle

Start with the problem you need to solve, then choose talents whose triggers occur naturally in your fights. These pairings follow the guide’s recommendations rather than claiming a universally optimal build.

  • Taking too much damage or using healing often: consider Deathless Vigor for general durability or Unhallowed Salve to improve recovery from healing items. Potent Tincture is a more conditional defensive option if you carry healing supplies.
  • Running short on ammunition: Alchemical Abundance supports a supply that relies on crafting ammo.
  • Getting caught during reloads: Profane Reload addresses reload downtime. If you tend to switch weapons instead, Gunslinger’s Trance speeds up swaps, while Instruments of Death rewards attacking just after a swap.
  • Taking deliberate, focused shots: Reticle Ritual rewards full focus, and Ruptured Core suits reliable weak-point hits. If you prefer quick, unfocused weak-point shots, consider Wandering Bullet instead.
  • Fighting at close range or following kills with melee: Feral Surge favors close-range damage against creatures. Butcher’s Zeal rewards a melee follow-up after a kill, while Inner Beast makes melee stronger when your magazine is empty.
  • Fighting with the flashlight off: Silent Hunter offers a damage increase in that condition, but its guide description does not say it makes Calvin undetectable.

Some choices pull in opposite directions: Reticle Ritual favors waiting for full focus, while Wandering Bullet suits unfocused weak-point shots. Likewise, high-risk damage talents such as Crimson Threshold, Pact of the Reaper, and Vessel of Destruction only make sense if you can handle their conditions or drawbacks.

What the talent descriptions do—and do not—quantify

The available talent reference describes relative effects but does not provide publishable damage or protection percentages. Treat “slightly,” “large,” and “greatly” as qualitative labels; do not assume a numeric value or compare two talents as though their effects were measured on a common scale. Check how a talent feels in play and reassess at a Talent Table when your needs change.
