Dropbox Basic is a free personal plan with 2 GB of starting storage. It includes file syncing, sharing, security features, online-only storage and Dropbox Backup, but Basic accounts are limited to three connected devices. Whether that is enough depends mainly on how much you store and how many devices you need to connect.
What you get with a free Dropbox Basic account
Dropbox’s Basic plan FAQ, updated January 29, 2026, lists 2 GB of space alongside syncing, security and file-sharing features. Dropbox also lists online-only storage and Dropbox Backup among the plan’s features. Those feature descriptions establish what Basic offers, but not the detailed behavior or availability of every individual feature.

The 2 GB is the starting allowance, not a guarantee that every account will remain at that amount: qualifying referrals can add space, subject to Dropbox’s requirements.

How the main limits affect everyday use
Storage: 2 GB to start
Two gigabytes can suit a small collection of documents and a limited number of files, but it is a modest allowance if you sync large photo or video libraries. Storage use is the key question to consider before treating Basic as a complete home for all your files.
#1 Best Overall
- FITS SNUGLY WITH USB-C. Plug your drive into your USB Type-C computers, tablets, and other devices for easy expansion and instant access.
- MASSIVE STORAGE, TINY DRIVE. It may look small, but with capacity up to 128GB(1), this drive holds your valuable files, personal documents, and more.
- QUICK FILE TRANSFERS. USB 3.2 Gen 1 performance powers your drive to reach read speeds up to 400MB/s(2) (128GB – 1TB), so you can move your files.
- BACK UP WITH THE SANDISK APP(3). Organize and manage your files with the SANDISK Memory Zone app(3) for Windows or Mac devices.
Devices: three connected devices
Dropbox’s account setup guidance, updated October 28, 2025, says Basic users can connect up to three devices. If you want to sync Dropbox across more than three computers and phones, that cap may be a more immediate constraint than storage.
Referral space: earn more by meeting the requirements
Dropbox says Basic users can receive 500 MB for each qualifying referral, up to 16 GB through referrals. The invited person must accept the invitation, install the desktop or mobile app, log in through the app and verify their email address; simply sharing a folder does not qualify. See Dropbox’s referral-space rules, updated September 7, 2026.

- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing

What happens if your account goes over quota
Dropbox says an over-quota Basic account may be unable to sync, upload, share, move or preview files and folders. If it remains over quota, Dropbox may delete files owned by the account to reduce usage. Dropbox says it sends email notices in advance and starts with the owner’s least recently modified files. The details are in its over-quota FAQ, updated July 29, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
Dropbox describes a 30-day recovery period for deleted files, provided there is enough storage to restore them. Downloaded local copies remain available, but an online-only placeholder or a mobile file marked for offline use may not be saved in the device’s file system. Before relying on a copy as a backup, confirm that the file itself—not just a cloud placeholder—is downloaded locally.

Basic is not the same as a paid-plan trial
Basic is the ongoing free personal plan. Dropbox’s separate free-trial instructions, updated April 22, 2026, describe limited-period trials of paid plans such as Professional, Standard or Advanced. Trial signup involves billing information, and Dropbox says users can cancel before the trial ends if they do not want to continue. Availability and checkout terms should be checked when signing up; a trial is not another name for the free Basic plan.
When an upgrade may make sense
If you need more space than Basic provides, Dropbox lists Plus as an upgrade option with 2 TB of storage. Its storage guidance, updated July 8, 2026, establishes that allowance, but does not establish one universal current price. Compare the added capacity with your actual storage needs and check the price and availability shown for your account before upgrading.

Do not confuse personal Basic with team plans
Dropbox Basic is the personal plan covered here. Dropbox’s Business Basic overview describes a separate free team plan that is not generally available. Team storage and limits do not describe a regular personal Basic account. Dropbox also notes on its Standard plan page that team features and availability can depend on purchase date and country.

- Consider your alternatives if you need more than three connected devices, expect to store more than the available space, or depend on syncing and sharing when the account is over quota.
- Protect important files by keeping fully downloaded copies where needed; do not assume an online-only placeholder is itself a local backup.
