To judge its contribution, connect campaigns to business outcomes—such as profitable sales, qualified leads or customer retention—and use measurement suited to both immediate conversions and effects that may take longer to emerge.
How digital marketing can contribute to business success
Its value depends on the business goal and the path from marketing activity to that goal. A campaign may capture people already looking to buy, introduce a brand to potential customers, or help a company learn which audiences and messages merit further investment.

Capture existing demand and drive action
Search, paid media, email and other digital activity can help people find an offer and take a measurable next step, such as purchasing or requesting a quote. These channels can be useful when the business needs near-term conversions, but a click or conversion credited to a campaign does not by itself prove that the campaign created an additional sale.

Build awareness and consideration
Brand-building activity seeks to make a business more familiar and more likely to be considered later. Its contribution may appear after the campaign or through channels not credited in a conventional conversion report, so judging it only by immediate sales can miss part of its potential value.

Improve decisions with customer data
Marketing data can help a business understand which audiences respond and where spending may be more productive. Use data collected with appropriate consent, and connect it to the business outcome being evaluated rather than treating more tracking or more activity as success in itself. Google’s January 2025 article on marketing effectiveness emphasizes consented first-party data as a basis for informed measurement.
Define success before choosing channels
Start by stating the result the business needs. That might be profitable revenue, sales, qualified leads, repeat purchases or another company-specific outcome. Then map the audience, marketing activity, channel and KPI to that result. A campaign can generate substantial reach and clicks while failing to deliver the business outcome that matters.
| Metric type | Examples | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Activity | Reach, impressions, views and clicks | Whether people were exposed to or interacted with campaign material; not, on its own, whether the business gained value. |
| Business outcome | Sales, revenue, qualified leads, retention or customer value | Whether the result aligns with the company’s goal; the measurement method still matters when estimating marketing’s contribution. |
| Incremental effect | Additional conversions or sales compared with a suitable control or baseline | Whether the tested activity appears to have caused extra outcomes under the test design. |
Why marketing effects can take different amounts of time
Performance activity is often designed to produce near-term actions. Brand building may influence consideration and sales later. A conversion report focused on a short window can therefore give an incomplete view of long-term effects; conversely, a later sale should not automatically be credited to a campaign without suitable evidence.

Google’s January 2025 article summarizes a Google/WARC analysis of brands in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden and the UK: returns in the first four months equaled returns across the following 20 months. That reported pattern illustrates a long tail in the analyzed markets; it is not a forecast or guaranteed return curve for every business.
The same Google article cites a Nielsen study for Google in which a 1% increase in brand awareness was associated with 0.4% higher short-term sales and 0.6% higher long-term sales. These are study-specific associations, not a promise that a particular awareness campaign will produce those sales changes.
Choose a measurement method for the question
Attribution, incrementality testing and marketing mix modeling (MMM) answer different questions. They can complement one another; none is a universal score of marketing effectiveness.
Rank #4
| Method | Best suited to | What it tells you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attribution | Assigning credit among interactions in observed or modeled customer journeys | Which interactions receive credit for a conversion under the selected model | Credit assignment alone does not establish causal lift and may undercount longer-term brand effects. |
| Incrementality experiment | Testing whether a particular activity caused additional outcomes | Lift attributable to the tested activity under the experiment’s design | It answers a bounded question and does not measure every channel or long-run effect. |
| Marketing mix modeling (MMM) | Assessing aggregate cross-channel contribution over time | Statistical relationships between marketing and sales or other business KPIs, accounting for channels and non-marketing factors | It requires appropriate historical data and modeling, and does not describe each individual customer journey. |
Google’s March 2024 measurement playbook says incrementality tests complement attribution and MMM rather than replace them, and that no single measurement solution fits every scenario. Google’s Meridian guide explains that MMM can account for influences such as economic shifts, competitors, seasonality, weather and news events.

Use attribution to understand credited journeys
Attribution can help compare how a selected model distributes conversion credit across interactions. Treat the result as credit under that model, not proof that each credited interaction caused the conversion.
Best Value
Use experiments to estimate causal lift
An incrementality test is useful when the decision is whether a defined activity added outcomes beyond what would otherwise have happened. Interpret its result in light of the tested audience, period and design; it does not settle every question about the wider marketing mix.
Use MMM for an aggregate view
MMM can help assess cross-channel relationships over time while accounting for external factors. It is an aggregate analysis, not a reconstruction of every person’s path to purchase. In the UK, 76% of surveyed companies relied on MMM for cross-channel budget allocation, according to the Boston Consulting Group UK Measurement Landscape Survey fielded January 27–February 15, 2025 (n=452), as cited in Google’s Meridian guide. That figure describes the surveyed companies, not all businesses or countries.

Published figures are useful as examples of possible outcomes, but their source and evidence type matter. Vendor-reported case studies and platform data should not be treated as neutral, universal estimates of what another business will achieve.

- Budget split: Google’s January 2025 article reports a Google/WARC recommendation of 50–60% for brand building and 40–50% for performance tactics, based on Ipsos MMA’s analysis of e-commerce ROI from European brands. Treat this as a study recommendation for that context, not a fixed allocation rule for every category or market.
- Campaign combination: Google reports that Domino’s saw a 45% increase in overall ROI from its YouTube platform after running brand-awareness campaigns alongside performance campaigns. This is a company-specific result in Google’s account, not a controlled universal estimate. Domino’s CMO for the U.K. and Ireland, Sarah Barron, said the findings showed the two campaign types were “mutually reinforcing.”
- Linked analytics accounts: Google’s November 2025 article reports a 23% increase in conversions and a 10% reduction in cost per conversion in Google internal data, globally, from October 2023 through December 2024, among businesses linking Google Ads or Google Marketing Platform accounts to a Google Analytics property. Google describes these results as correlated; they do not establish that linking accounts caused the changes.
- Advertiser case study: Google reports that India-based direct-to-consumer jewelry brand Palmonas recorded a 7× year-on-year increase in online sales revenue in Q4 2024 and a 76% increase in return on ad spend after adopting GA4 data-driven attribution and adjusting campaigns. This is a vendor-published case study, not a controlled estimate for other businesses.
A practical way to improve marketing decisions
- Set the outcome: Choose the business result to improve and define the relevant KPI before launching activity.
- Connect activity to the goal: Specify the audience, channel and action expected to contribute to that outcome. Keep reach and clicks as diagnostic activity measures, not substitutes for business results.
- Choose a time horizon: Decide whether the decision concerns immediate conversions, longer-term brand effects or both.
- Use a fitting measurement method: Use attribution to examine credited journeys, an incrementality test to estimate lift from a defined activity, and MMM to assess aggregate cross-channel relationships where appropriate.
- Review evidence and adapt: Separate observed association, modeled estimates, case-study claims and experimental results. Adjust spending in response to evidence relevant to the company’s goal, rather than applying a universal channel split.
