For most first-time viewers, watch Yellowstone → 1883 → 1923 → Marshals → Dutton Ranch. That is the release order presented in Paramount+’s May 16, 2026 viewing guide. If you would rather follow the Dutton family’s internal timeline, start with 1883, then 1923, Yellowstone, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Both routes are valid; the right choice depends on whether you value the franchise’s original introductions or the family history’s chronology.
The word “spin-offs” is a convenient shorthand, but these shows are not all the same kind of continuation. 1883 and 1923 are historical origin stories, Yellowstone is the modern flagship, and Marshals and Dutton Ranch continue present-day characters along separate paths.

The official guide dates the first three releases to 2018, 2021 and 2022, then lists Marshals and Dutton Ranch as 2026 entries. It does not provide a season-by-season interleaving plan, so watch each series as a complete show rather than trying to splice individual seasons together.

These are distinct branches rather than five interchangeable seasons. The historical shows explain where the family came from; Yellowstone establishes the modern conflict; Marshals follows Kayce into law enforcement; and Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip in a new location.

Why release order is the safest recommendation for newcomers
- Begin with Yellowstone. It is the franchise’s release-order starting point and introduces the contemporary Dutton family, the Montana ranch and the central land conflict. Starting here also reflects how the audience first encountered the saga.
- Move to 1883. The prequel shifts to the late nineteenth century and shows James and Margaret Dutton’s westward journey. Because it is a 10-episode limited series, it offers a contained historical story before you commit to the next chapter.
- Continue with 1923. This jumps to a later generation, including Jacob and Cara, in the early twentieth century. Its two-season scope gives the family’s history a larger period canvas than 1883.
- Choose Marshals if Kayce’s next chapter interests you. Kayce leaves the ranch for an elite US Marshals unit in Montana, so the show changes from family-and-ranch drama to a Western procedural while retaining a Dutton viewpoint.
- Finish with Dutton Ranch if Beth and Rip are your priority. Their move to South Texas creates a separate present-day continuation rather than another historical prequel.
This order lets you see the franchise expand from one modern drama into historical origin stories and character-led continuations. It also avoids assuming that every new title shares the same structure or setting.
When chronological order is better
Choose 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone → Marshals → Dutton Ranch if your main question is how the Dutton family’s story develops over time. The first three series progress from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and then to the modern day. The final two remain present-day branches after Yellowstone.
Chronological viewing makes the family’s migration and succession the spine of the experience. It also means starting with a completed, limited historical story rather than the flagship that made the franchise widely known. That is a good fit if you prefer origins, period settings and a linear family timeline over release-era discovery.

Pick a starting point by the experience you want
You want the shortest complete commitment
Start with 1883. Paramount+’s guide identifies it as a limited-run series and says all 10 episodes are streaming. It is the most clearly bounded entry in the five-show path, although its historical setting means you will not begin with the modern ranch conflict.
You want the family’s earliest story
Start with 1883 and continue to 1923. The first follows James and Margaret west; the second follows a later generation, including Jacob and Cara. Together they provide the historical foundation before you reach Yellowstone.
You want present-day ranch politics immediately
Start with Yellowstone. It centers on John Dutton and the Montana ranch and is the only entry that serves as both the modern flagship and the release-order origin of the screen franchise.

Watch Yellowstone first, then try Marshals. The newer series begins with Kayce leaving ranch life for an elite United States Marshals unit in Montana. It is designed as a distinct procedural branch, so it is the natural choice for viewers more interested in his career and action cases than in the ranch’s day-to-day succession battle.

Watch Yellowstone before Dutton Ranch. The latter sends Beth and Rip to South Texas to start a new life, making it the direct character-based continuation for that pair.
You prefer a procedural structure
Marshals is the clear fit. Associated Press reporting characterizes it as a Western law-enforcement procedural. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told the Associated Press that “CBS really wanted this to be a non-traditional procedural, which really allowed us to lean heavily into character.” That describes its intended shape, not a guarantee that every viewer will prefer it to the ranch dramas.

How Marshals differs from the ranch shows
Marshals keeps Kayce and a Montana-Western atmosphere but relocates the weekly engine from family land disputes to law-enforcement work. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, told Associated Press reporter Mark Kennedy: “We wanted to make it feel organic and we wanted there to be enough of the sort of ethos of ‘Yellowstone’ in there that the original fans could have something to hold on to getting into the show, but then have it have somewhere to go that felt like its own thing.”
That distinction matters when deciding whether to treat it as “more Yellowstone.” It is connected through character and tone, yet its premise is a new professional setting. Watch it after Yellowstone if continuity with Kayce matters; approach it as its own procedural if you are mainly looking for investigations and action.

What about other announced or rumored titles?
The five-show route above is the lineup in Paramount+’s cited guide. An Associated Press report described 6666, 1944 and The Madison as potential future spin-offs at the time that article was published. That wording was a time-bound development snapshot, not confirmation of a current release, platform or final place in the Dutton timeline.
Do not insert The Madison into the family chronology based on the five-show guide. The guide does not place it in that timeline, and the older “potential future” description does not establish its relationship to the Dutton family. Verify any later official announcement before treating those projects as part of a watch order.

- Assuming every “spin-off” is a direct sequel. 1883 and 1923 are origin stories, while Marshals and Dutton Ranch are present-day continuations with different leads and structures.
- Using US availability as a global rule. The services listed above are specifically US guidance and may not match your country.
- Trying to interleave seasons without an official sequence. The guide lists series in order but does not specify a season-by-season split. Complete one series before moving to the next.
- Expecting Marshals to be another ranch-season format. Its premise is Kayce’s move into a law-enforcement unit, and AP reporting identifies it as a non-traditional Western procedural.
- Treating development reports as a finished slate. References to possible projects such as 6666, 1944 and The Madison require current official confirmation before you add them to a list.
Bottom line: which series should you watch next?
New to the franchise? Follow Yellowstone → 1883 → 1923 → Marshals → Dutton Ranch. Prefer a clean family timeline? Start with 1883 and proceed chronologically through 1923 and Yellowstone. For a short, self-contained introduction choose 1883; for Kayce choose Marshals; for Beth and Rip choose Dutton Ranch.
