In a seven-day experiment on Yandex Music’s My Vibe smart-speaker surface, it outperformed the production control on five engagement measures. The result is promising but limited: Sona was not yet running on full traffic, its catalog coverage was lower than the existing stack, and the test did not establish gains across other Yandex services or recommendation surfaces.
What is Yandex Sona?
Sona is a recommendation model for Yandex Music, not a general-purpose AI assistant. It is designed for My Vibe, where a smart speaker starts playing music without the listener first choosing an artist or mood. That setting makes a listener’s recent plays, skips, likes, dislikes and request context important signals for choosing what to play next.

Traditional recommendation systems often split the job into stages: one system generates a pool of possible tracks, then another ranks that pool. Sona brings those stages together around a shared representation of the listener’s event history. The Yandex Sona Team’s August 2026 technical report describes it as a single served model replacing the recommendation cascade on the tested surface.

One encoder represents the listening history
Sona’s encoder processes a chronological sequence of engagement events. Those events can include plays, skips, likes and dislikes, together with track identity and request context. The resulting shared user representation supports both the generation and scoring stages.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
An autoregressive decoder generates candidate tracks
Rather than selecting only from a prebuilt candidate list, the decoder generates short sequences of discrete semantic item identifiers. A deterministic mapping converts those identifiers into catalog tracks.
A ranking module scores the generated candidates
A Ranking Module uses the shared user representation to score candidates. The final serving configuration consists of the encoder, decoder, semantic-ID-to-item mapping and Ranking Module. The separate Teacher Ranker used during training is not part of the deployed serving configuration.

How was Sona trained?
Training combines next-token prediction with guidance distilled from a Teacher Ranker. The report describes the teacher as being pretrained to predict the next item and then fine-tuned for ranking. Sona’s training uses both dense next-token targets and ranking guidance, which the authors intend to combine sequence prediction with feedback about item quality. The teacher provides training signals; it is removed at inference.
The report says neither Sona nor the teacher relies on hand-engineered features: both use logged event fields and learned item representations. It also describes an online training pipeline in which events are aggregated into sessions over a 15-minute window, and updated model weights reach production every 10 minutes. The reported end-to-end delay from an event being emitted to an updated model in production is 45 minutes at the median and 60 minutes at the 99th percentile. Those figures describe Yandex’s reported infrastructure, not a general performance guarantee.

Did Sona improve Yandex Music recommendations?
In the final controlled experiment, run on My Vibe smart-speaker traffic for seven days, 15% of randomly selected users were assigned to each of the Sona and production-control splits. Existing hard business rules that restrict production output remained in place. Compared with control, the Sona Team reported these changes:
| Measure | Change versus production control |
|---|---|
| Active Users | +4.53% |
| Total Listening Time | +6.30% |
| Likes | +11.42% |
| Repeat Commands | +17.99% |
| Deeply Engaged Users | +7.37% |
The Sona Team’s 2026 technical report says reported treatment-control differences were statistically significant at p<0.01 unless marked otherwise. These are results from that experiment and surface, not a forecast of the lift on other products or for all Yandex Music listeners.

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Yandex’s October 1, 2026 investor-relations announcement gives rounded headline figures: listening time rose 6.3%, repeat requests nearly 18%, and active listeners 4.5%. The technical report’s exact metric names and values are the more precise figures for the experiment.

What the results do—and do not—show
The report says Sona’s +4.53% Active Users result was 2.35 times the +1.93% increment previously recorded for Argus on the same surface. That comparison is useful context from Yandex’s work; it is not a head-to-head comparison of unrelated recommendation products.

The scope matters. The authors say Sona had not been deployed on full traffic and that its catalog coverage was lower than the production stack. They describe the work as validation on one recommendation surface and say other surfaces still need validation. Their technical report puts the limitation plainly: “Despite the major improvements in core platform metrics, we have not yet deployed Sona on full traffic.”
The final experiment also used an extended user history of 8,192 events with History Compression. Because the longer-history test and an earlier experiment were run separately, their results cannot isolate how much the extended history itself contributed to the final outcome.
Why the My Vibe setting matters
My Vibe is a passive-listening context: playback can begin without a specific artist or mood request. Skips and plays provide frequent feedback, while repeat listening may be welcome rather than a sign of poor variety. A recommender in this setting must balance familiar tracks against discovery. Those are design considerations identified by the report, not proof that Sona has resolved every trade-off.
