The original Xteink X4 is a niche pocket reader, not an easy recommendation as a first or all-purpose e-reader. Its key limitation is book access: the reviewer whose verdict inspired this article found that Kindle, Libby, and NetGalley books did not work as expected, while DRM-free files were a better fit. If your library already includes compatible files and you want a tiny secondary device, the X4’s portability may still appeal.
Why the reviewer says book lovers should skip it
The title-linked review, published September 17, 2026, makes a specific case: the original X4 is a poor match for readers who rely on purchased Kindle books, Libby loans, or other DRM-protected titles. The reviewer describes her own experience, not a compatibility test of every book or service. The practical point is to check how you get books before buying: an EPUB extension alone does not guarantee that a file will work if it is protected by DRM.

Which books can you read on the X4?
DRM-free files are the more dependable fit
The review presents the original X4 as a sideloading reader for compatible, DRM-free books. An independent review also describes microSD sideloading and offline reading as useful strengths. Before choosing the device, verify that the specific files you want to read are DRM-free and in a format the model and firmware handle.

Kindle and Libby access is the central risk
The title-linked reviewer says her Kindle and Libby materials were not usable on the original X4 as she expected. That is a meaningful warning if those services are your normal book sources, but it should not be inflated into a universal claim that every title from either service is incompatible.
Do not transfer Classic file guidance to the original X4
Xteink’s current X4 Classic page says that MOBI and PDF may not be fully supported by its firmware and recommends converting them through the official app before transferring them. This is guidance for the Classic listing; it does not establish the same behavior for the older X4. When assessing a listing, confirm the exact model and its current firmware instructions.

What the X4 is good at—and what it gives up
Reviewers describe the original X4 as compact and pocketable, with offline reading and microSD sideloading among its advantages. The title-linked reviewer also found it well-designed and long-lasting in her use. These are individual review observations, not standardized measurements. The trade-off is the small reading area: an independent reviewer noted that less text fits on each page and raised build-quality concerns.
The software experience may also matter. The eBook Reader blog reported formatting and navigation problems with stock software and considered the device better suited to a secondary-reader role than to a first e-reader. That reviewer noted CrossPoint firmware as an alternative; the observations should not be treated as a guarantee about every firmware version or setup.

Original X4 and X4 Classic are different models
Specifications and lifecycle statements vary by model and source. Xteink’s current product page covers the X4 Classic, also identified there as X4 V2; a regional XTEINK BR page describes the original X4 as discontinued and the Classic as its successor. That regional statement does not prove global availability, so check the model name on the specific offer.
| Specification | Original X4 | X4 Classic (X4 V2) |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 4.3 inches, 220 PPI (XTEINK BR, 2026) | 4.3 inches, 219 PPI (Xteink, 2026) |
| Dimensions | Not stated on the XTEINK BR page (2026) | 114 × 69 × 4.9 mm (Xteink, 2026) |
| Weight | 77 g (XTEINK BR, 2026) | 68 g (Xteink, 2026) |
| Battery capacity | 650 mAh (XTEINK BR, 2026) | 920 mAh (Xteink, 2026) |
| Battery-life claim | Up to 14 days, as stated by XTEINK BR (2026) | Up to 10 days of casual reading, as claimed by Xteink (2026) |
| Storage information | Not stated on the XTEINK BR page (2026) | Includes a 16 GB microSD card; expansion up to 256 GB (Xteink, 2026) |
| Front light | Not stated in the cited specification listing | No built-in front light (Xteink, 2026) |
The battery figures are vendor claims, not independent runtime tests. The Classic listing also specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, pogo-pin charging, physical buttons, and no touchscreen. It lists a magnetic charging adapter and microSD card in the box; those contents should not be assumed for every original X4 bundle.

Is it a good first e-reader?
For someone who wants a primary reader for books from mainstream ebook stores or a public library, the evidence points to looking elsewhere unless their exact titles and transfer method are confirmed compatible. The issue is not simply screen size or convenience: the expected book-access path may not work. The eBook Reader blog’s view that the X4 makes more sense as a secondary device aligns with that limitation.

As a secondary pocket reader, it is easier to justify if you already have DRM-free files, value carrying a very small device, and are comfortable sideloading books and navigating the available software. The small display and review-reported software trade-offs still apply.

Check these details before buying
- Confirm the model: distinguish the original X4 from the X4 Classic (X4 V2); specifications and support notes are not interchangeable.
- Check your book files: identify the actual file format and whether DRM applies, rather than relying on the word “EPUB.”
- Confirm the transfer workflow: find the instructions for that model and firmware, especially if your books are MOBI or PDF.
- Think about lighting: the X4 Classic has no front light, according to Xteink. Its page recommends an additional lighting accessory for low-light reading.
- Consider the reading experience: a 4.3-inch screen is highly portable, but independent reviewers report a small reading area; software formatting and navigation can also be a concern.
- Check the specific offer: the regional page’s discontinued status applies to its market context, not necessarily worldwide stock. Verify model identity, availability, and included accessories on the listing you are considering.
