The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a framework for describing files with metadata and carrying that information alongside or inside them. It separates the data model—the kinds of statements that can be made about a resource—from the XML-based representation of those statements and the rules a particular file format uses to store them. That distinction matters: an XMP-capable workflow does not guarantee that every application will preserve or display every metadata property.
What XMP is—and what it is not
Adobe describes XMP as file-labeling technology for capturing, sharing, and updating information about digital content. Typical fields include a title, description, keywords, author, and copyright details. It is a metadata platform and specification, not a standalone consumer application or a particular file type.

The standard’s formal foundation is ISO 16684-1:2019, titled Graphic technology — Extensible metadata platform (XMP) — Part 1: Data model, serialization and core properties. ISO identifies it as Edition 2, published in April 2019. Its record says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current; the earlier 2012 edition is withdrawn.
How the XMP layers fit together
“XMP” can refer to related but distinct layers. Keeping them separate helps explain what the standard defines—and what depends on an application or file format.
#1 Best Overall
1. The data model
The model describes the forms of metadata statements that can be made about a resource. For example, it provides a structured way to represent descriptive information about a photograph or document. The model is conceptual; it is not itself a file’s metadata packet.
2. Serialization
Serialization records an instance of the model as XML. Adobe’s specification documentation describes the serialized representation in terms of RDF. In practical terms, this is how structured metadata statements are written down for software to process.

3. Properties and schemas
ISO Part 1 defines core properties intended for broad use across file formats and subject areas. Adobe’s documentation also covers additional properties, including general-purpose and application-specific schemas. A property’s existence in a schema does not mean every application will expose it in its interface.

4. Storage in a file or sidecar
XMP metadata can be embedded in formats such as JPEG and PDF, or kept separately in a sidecar file. The exact packet packaging and embedding rules depend on the file format. If metadata exists in more than one representation, such as XMP and another format-specific form, reconciliation is a separate implementation concern.

These boundaries are reflected in the references: ISO 16684-1:2019 defines the model, XML serialization, and core properties, while Adobe’s XMP Specifications documentation organizes further guidance on properties, file storage, packet packaging, embedding, and reconciliation.
How XMP is used in a workflow
Metadata can be added or updated as digital content is created and then carried with the content to support organization, description, and exchange. Adobe’s XMP overview describes using XMP to capture, share, and update information, including titles, descriptions, keywords, and author or copyright information. The overview notes that XMP can be embedded in popular image, video, and document formats, while sidecar files provide another storage option.

- Compact and Handy – This 4x6 small photo album holds 24 photos, perfect for organizing small collections by event or theme—whether it's a weekend trip, birthday party, baby milestones, or kids' drawings.
- Acid-Free interior design: The inner pages are made of acid-free material, which helps preserve your photos by preventing fading, yellowing, or deterioration over time.
- Premium Linen Cover – Wrapped in high-quality linen, the cover offers a soft texture and elegant appearance. It brings a classic, refined touch to your photo collection.
- Personal Touch Design: The front of the album book includes a small window for your cover photo or a handwritten label. The cover window is designed with a window clip, which makes it easy to change the photos on display.
- Meaningful Gift: Its simple size and thoughtful design make it a lovely gift for family or friends. Great for sharing special moments in a personal way.
- For people organizing content: descriptive fields can make files easier to identify and manage in tools that read those fields.
- For software developers: XMP provides a documented metadata model and serialization to integrate into applications.
- For workflows moving files between applications: check how each application handles the relevant properties and whether metadata is embedded, stored in a sidecar, or represented in more than one way.
Adobe’s documentation divides its specifications into three useful areas: Part 1 covers the basic model and serialization; Part 2 covers additional properties; and Part 3 covers storage in files, including packet packaging, format embedding, and reconciliation with other metadata representations. The ISO core standard does not, by itself, settle every format-specific storage question.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes XMP guarantee metadata will transfer between apps?
No. XMP provides a framework for metadata and guidance for representing and storing it, but support varies by software, property, and file format. An application may read some fields but not show them, may not support an application-specific property, or may handle embedded and sidecar metadata differently. The standard and Adobe’s guidance do not establish universal support or guarantee that every field will survive every export or conversion.
Best Value
For an important transfer, verify the specific fields and target format in the applications involved. If a workflow stores the same information in multiple representations, consult the relevant format and storage guidance to understand how conflicts are handled.
Quick Recap
Which XMP reference should you use?
- For the formal core definition and current edition: use ISO 16684-1:2019.
- For Adobe’s specification structure and file-storage guidance: use the XMP Specifications.
- For an overview of workflows and developer resources: see Adobe’s XMP page, which names the XMP Toolkit SDK for integrating XMP functionality and the XMP Metadata UI SDK for customizing metadata display in Creative Cloud applications.
