An XML native database is a database that represents XML documents directly in its logical data model and treats each XML document as a basic unit of storage. The definition describes how the database understands and works with data—not the physical format or technology it uses to store it.
What makes a database “native” to XML?
The XML:DB Initiative’s commonly used definition has two central ideas: the database’s logical model is designed for XML documents, and an XML document is its basic logical storage unit. That model accounts for XML features such as elements, attributes, character data, and document order. The definition is not a W3C database standard. XML.com’s explanation of the XML:DB definition provides this framing.

XML itself is a markup language for describing document structure and data. The W3C’s XML 1.0 Recommendation defines the syntax and describes documents in terms of constructs including elements, attributes, and character data.
“Native” refers to the logical model, not a particular storage engine. A native XML database may use relational, hierarchical, object-oriented, or proprietary technology underneath. It does not have to preserve every document as unchanged text.

How it differs from an XML-enabled database
An XML-enabled database can accept, store, export, or query XML while representing the data internally with a different model, such as relational tables. A native XML database instead uses an XML model to represent and manipulate the documents logically. The XML:DB definition is a useful reference for the native model; W3C’s XQuery requirements describe query needs that include collections of documents managed by native XML repositories.
| Question | Native XML database | XML-enabled database |
|---|---|---|
| What is the logical data model? | XML documents and their structures | Another model, such as relational data, with XML support |
| What is the basic logical record? | An XML document | A record or structure from the underlying model; XML may be imported, exported, or queried |
| Does the label determine physical storage? | No | No |
The distinction matters when an application needs document identity, sibling order, mixed content, comments, processing instructions, or documents with varying structures to remain meaningful during queries and updates. It does not by itself establish that a native database will perform better or suit a project better; that depends on the workload and implementation.
How XML databases work with queries
XQuery is a query language for working with XML data. W3C’s requirements include querying collections of documents in native XML repositories, but the precise languages, versions, and features available depend on the database product and release.

BaseX example
BaseX 12 documentation describes BaseX as an XML database and XQuery processor. Its database reference treats XML documents as resources and documents functions for retrieving documents and collections. These details apply to that documented release; check the documentation for the version you plan to use.
eXist-db example
eXist-db’s XQuery documentation describes support for XQuery 3.1 and notes that some features and functions are unsupported. Its learning resources direct beginners and advanced developers to different materials. This illustrates why support should be checked product by product rather than assumed from the “native XML” label.

Start with the role XML plays in the application. If XML documents are the primary data and their nesting, order, mixed content, or variable structures matter to queries and updates, a native XML model may align naturally with the work. If XML is mainly an interchange format around records managed in another model, an XML-enabled database may be enough.
