Fortnite’s download time depends on the file size shown on your device and the download speed your connection actually sustains. Use this estimate: minutes ≈ 133.3 × download size in decimal GB ÷ speed in Mbps. It is a theoretical calculation, not a guaranteed finish time; fluctuating speeds and platform or network conditions can add time.
Calculate an estimate for your download
Check the download or update screen for the file size, then use the speed currently shown by your device or download interface if available. An internet plan’s advertised maximum is not necessarily the rate your download will sustain.

The formula assumes decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), megabits per second, and a steady rate from start to finish. For example, a hypothetical 40 GB download at a sustained 100 Mbps would take about 53 minutes in ideal conditions. At the same hypothetical size, 25 Mbps would take about 3 hours 33 minutes, while 200 Mbps would take about 27 minutes. These examples are arithmetic illustrations, not Fortnite size claims or measured results.
Find the size for your platform
There is no single current Fortnite download size that applies to every platform and installation. Epic says update sizes may vary across platforms and even between players using the same platform. The available download flow and file size can also depend on the platform: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS/iPadOS are included in Epic’s current support listing.

For an update, use the figure on the update screen as the starting point. Epic Games Support states: “When you queue a Fortnite update, the space required for the update appears on the update screen no matter which platform you play on.” See Epic’s guidance on Fortnite update space.
PC installation options
On PC, selected installation components can change the amount downloaded or installed. High Resolution Textures are one example of an optional component that can affect update size. Epic explains how to uncheck optional components in the Epic Games Launcher to reduce the installed footprint; the exact options and sizes may change. What to try if the download is slow
- Compare against the actual rate. Recalculate using the speed shown during the download, rather than the maximum advertised by your internet plan.
- Check whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. Epic includes wired Ethernet as a network troubleshooting step. A cable may help if wireless signal loss is limiting the connection, but it will not raise the capacity of your internet plan or guarantee a faster download. - Recheck the displayed size. Updates can differ by platform and PC installation selections, so a size or time reported for someone else’s setup may not match yours.
