Your new gamepad may appear in Windows or a game as an Xbox 360 controller because it is using an XInput-compatible profile. That profile gives software a familiar set of buttons, sticks, and triggers to work with—a practical shortcut that can help a controller function in more PC games. It does not mean the device is made by Microsoft, and it does not guarantee that every game or controller feature will work.
Why does my new controller show up as an Xbox 360 controller?
“Pretending” means the gamepad is presenting a compatibility profile: its physical design can be different, while its reported controls resemble a standard Xbox-style pad that a game already understands. The key interface is XInput, a Windows API that lets applications receive input from XUSB controllers. Microsoft describes XInput as easier to use and requiring less setup than the older DirectInput API. Microsoft’s XInput and DirectInput comparison explains the distinction.

Microsoft’s XUSB driver supports both an XUSB interface and a HID interface, so controllers can be accessed through XInput and DirectInput. Its standard gamepad mapping covers familiar controls such as the left and right sticks, triggers, D-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, bumpers, Back and Start, and stick clicks. Microsoft’s XUSB driver documentation describes those mappings.

For a player, it can mean a game recognizes the pad without requiring a custom button map. That is the compatibility benefit—not a promise that every game will recognize every device.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Why use an Xbox 360-style profile?
The Xbox 360 controller became a useful target because its XInput interface and familiar layout were widely supported in PC gaming. Valve’s Steamworks controller documentation calls it the flagship XInput device and describes it as historically one of the most widely supported controllers for PC games. That is Valve’s qualitative description, not a measured market-share figure.
When a game already has an XInput input path, a compatible profile can let many gamepads use that same path. That reduces the need for a game to know the make and model of every pad. The profile is therefore a practical compatibility convention, not an assertion that different controllers are physically identical.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What can the compatibility profile leave out?
A standard profile focuses on controls the target interface can represent. A controller may have extra hardware—such as a gyroscope or trackpads—that a basic Xbox-style profile does not convey. Steamworks notes that the Xbox 360 reference controller itself has no trackpads or gyroscope. Whether additional features remain usable depends on the specific controller, its driver, the game, and any translation software in the input path.
There are also differences between XInput and DirectInput support. Microsoft cautions that a game written only for XInput will not work with legacy DirectInput devices. Conversely, when an XUSB controller is accessed through DirectInput, Microsoft documents several limitations:

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- The left and right triggers appear as one combined button or axis rather than separate controls.
- Vibration is unavailable through that DirectInput path.
- Queries for headset devices are unavailable.
Microsoft says the combined-trigger mapping is deliberate: older titles expect centered axes at rest. These limitations apply to the documented DirectInput path, not automatically to every XInput-compatible controller or every game.
Is XInput still the only Windows gamepad path?
No. Microsoft describes GameInput as a functional superset of XInput, DirectInput, Raw Input, HID, and WinRT, intended to provide a consistent interface for different kinds of input devices. Its GameInput overview outlines that broader scope.

In March 2025, Microsoft announced expanded GameInput PC HID mappings for hundreds of devices, including gamepads, racing wheels, flight sticks, arcade sticks, and navigation controllers. Microsoft’s March 2025 announcement documents the expansion. It shows a broader API direction, but does not establish that every existing or shipped PC game has migrated from XInput.

What to check if a game does not recognize your controller
- Check the game’s supported input types. An XInput profile will not fix a game that expects a different input path, and an XInput-only game may not support a legacy DirectInput device.
- Check the controller’s advertised profile and platform support. Confirm XInput compatibility, the supported Windows version or platform, and whether the pad uses USB, Bluetooth, or a required receiver.
- Check whether extra software is part of the setup. Some compatibility paths may depend on a driver or translation layer; verify whether it must be installed or running for your target games.
- Check feature-specific support separately. If you need gyro aiming, trackpads, vibration, or separate trigger behavior, confirm that the controller, driver, and game expose that feature through the input path you plan to use.
What the Xbox 360 label does—and does not—tell you
The label is a clue about the controller interface a game or Windows tool sees. It can explain why the pad works through a familiar PC-game input path, but it does not identify the hardware maker, prove the device is a Microsoft product, or establish that every controller-specific function is available. The exact result depends on the profile and the software using it.
