For in-home Xfinity TV service watched through the Xfinity Stream app on a Samsung Smart TV, Xfinity says the stream does not count toward your monthly Xfinity Internet data usage, as long as the TV is connected to your in-home Xfinity network. The exemption does not cover every app or every kind of programming. TV Go and NOW TV content delivered over an internet or mobile connection can count toward any data threshold that applies to your plan, and whether a threshold applies at all depends on which Internet plan you have.
How Xfinity decides whether a stream counts
Xfinity’s rule turns on how the programming reaches your TV, not on the name of the app. Xfinity’s overview of the Xfinity Stream app describes the in-home case this way: “When you’re in your home and connected to your in-home Xfinity network, streaming video to the Xfinity Stream app and portal is an in-home cable service delivered over Xfinity’s managed cable network, not over the internet. It will not count towards your Xfinity Internet monthly data usage.”

The same overview draws the line on the other side. “If you watch any TV Go or NOW TV and streaming content through Xfinity Stream, that programming is delivered over an internet or mobile connection and will count towards any data usage thresholds that may apply.”
In-home Xfinity TV on your home network
This is the case the exemption covers. The Samsung TV must be connected to your in-home Xfinity network, and you must be watching Xfinity TV service rather than internet-delivered content. Xfinity describes this as a managed cable service, which is why it is not counted as Internet usage.

TV Go and NOW TV content
TV Go and NOW TV programming is delivered over an internet or mobile connection. Xfinity says it counts toward any applicable data threshold. The exemption described above does not extend to it, so if your plan has a cap, this viewing draws from it.
Quick reference
| Viewing situation | How the programming is delivered | Counts toward Xfinity Internet data usage? |
|---|---|---|
| In-home Xfinity TV service in the Xfinity Stream app on a Samsung Smart TV, connected to your in-home Xfinity network | In-home cable service over Xfinity’s managed cable network | No, according to Xfinity’s overview |
| TV Go or NOW TV content in the Xfinity Stream app | Internet or mobile connection | Yes, toward any data threshold that applies to your plan |
| Internet-delivered programming in general | Internet connection | Yes, counted as Internet usage under Xfinity’s rule |
Xfinity’s support pages do not address how the exemption behaves when the Samsung TV is connected to a network other than your in-home Xfinity network. Treat the exemption as applying only to the in-home case Xfinity describes.

Which data plan you are on matters more than the app
The 1.2 TB figure that many readers associate with Xfinity is not a universal current cap. Xfinity’s “Xfinity Internet 1.2 TB data plan FAQs” page says new Internet plans include unlimited data and equipment at no extra cost, and that the 1.2 TB monthly limit applies to older legacy plans.
New plans with unlimited data
If your account is on a newer plan with unlimited data, the 1.2 TB limit does not apply to you. The in-home exemption still matters only if you are concerned with plan-specific rules rather than a cap.

Legacy plans with a 1.2 TB monthly limit
The FAQ says the 1.2 TB limit applies to eligible legacy plans. It also lists exclusions, including new plans, several named plan categories, unlimited-data plans, and certain markets. Market-specific exclusions named in the FAQ include a set of Northeast states and parts of North Carolina and Ohio. Because exclusions and plan names change, check the plan shown in your own account rather than assuming your plan is covered.
Overage terms on legacy plans
For eligible legacy plans, Xfinity says the first over-limit month in any 12-month period is currently a courtesy month. After that, the FAQ states a charge of $10 per 50 GB over the limit, up to $100 per month. Xfinity says this overage policy is subject to change.

How to check your usage
Xfinity says you can view your Internet data usage online or in the Xfinity app. Only Primary and Manager account users can see it.

- Go to Services, then Internet, then Internet data usage.
- Confirm the plan listed for your account. If you are a user other than a Primary or Manager, the usage section will not be available to you, so ask the account holder to check.
Avoiding usage after you stop watching
Xfinity warns in its partner-device FAQ that “streaming channels or content may keep using internet data even if you turn off your device.” Its guidance is to log out of the app when you are not watching. This matters most for internet-delivered content such as TV Go and NOW TV, which can count toward thresholds. Logging out is also the simplest way to stop background use from accumulating on a capped plan.

What the evidence does not establish
- No Samsung-specific data figure. Xfinity has not published, and the sources do not establish, how many gigabytes an hour the Stream app uses on a Samsung TV. Do not convert the figures below into per-hour estimates.
- The 498 GB average is a general Xfinity figure. Xfinity’s FAQ reports “around 498 GB per month” as average data usage. It is an Xfinity-published number for its customers in general and is not a measure of Xfinity Stream use on a Samsung TV.
- No model-year list. Xfinity lists Samsung Smart TV as a supported category, but the pages do not state which Samsung model years are compatible. Check your model’s Xfinity compatibility before assuming support.
- No independent verification. The exemption and plan terms above come from Xfinity’s own support pages, checked in early October 2026. No independent testing of how Xfinity counts Stream data was available.
Other providers, non-Xfinity home networks, and every channel inside the app are outside the scope of Xfinity’s statements.
