Xerox’s older guide documents a Linux driver package, but the current Phaser 3250 download page showed no results when checked. That does not prove no archived driver exists, and it does not establish compatibility with current Linux distributions.
Start by identifying the setup
Before changing the driver, note the exact printer variant, whether it is connected by USB or network, your Linux distribution and release, the CUPS version, and the queue’s exact status or error. These details help distinguish a queue problem from a connection or rendering problem; available documentation does not establish one driver configuration that works for every modern system.

- Record the model suffix, such as 3250D or 3250DN.
- Confirm the printer is powered on and the cable or network connection is in place.
- Write down the queue state and any error shown by Linux or the application.
Check the printer and queue
The Phaser 3250 service manual’s Linux troubleshooting section says to check that the driver is installed, the printer appears in the printer list, and the printer is started rather than stopped. Xerox’s user guide also describes installing and configuring the printer using its Linux package.
- Open your distribution’s printer settings and confirm that a Phaser 3250 queue is listed.
- Check whether the queue is enabled or stopped. If stopped, start it and retry a small test job.
- If the queue stops again, note the accompanying error before restarting or changing settings; the error can point to a failed job, connection, or driver issue.
Check the connection and port
For USB, confirm that Linux detects the printer when it is connected and that the configured queue refers to the intended device. For a network connection, confirm that the printer is reachable on the network and that the queue uses the intended connection. The service manual also describes MFP-port locks: another application or a driver process left in an abnormal state can prevent access to a port.

- Close other applications that may be communicating with the printer, then retry.
- If a previous print application or driver process ended abruptly, a port may remain locked; avoid starting multiple print attempts while diagnosing it.
- Do not alter job settings while a job is actively printing.
Review application print options
The service manual flags application command-line options, including a raw-print option, as a possible source of trouble. Option names and behavior vary by application, so inspect the settings for the application that produces the failing job rather than changing unrelated flags system-wide. If another application can print successfully, that is useful evidence that the issue may be application-specific.
What to know about Xerox’s Linux driver
The older installation instructions
Xerox’s Phaser 3250 User Guide says the supplied CD-ROM includes an MFP Driver package for Linux and describes an installer that requests administrator or root privileges. The guide is historical: its installer and examples should not be assumed to match current distributions or architectures.

The current download-page result
Xerox’s Phaser 3250 driver-download page asks visitors to select an operating system, but showed “No results found” when checked. That is a result from the page at retrieval, not proof that no archived Xerox driver is available elsewhere.
A narrowly dated CUPS example
The service manual discusses an IPP/CUPS issue for SuSE Linux 9.2 with CUPS 1.1.21, recommending socket printing or a later CUPS version in that historical case. This example is specific to an old distribution and CUPS release; it is not a basis for upgrading or changing CUPS on a modern Linux system.

If the Xerox driver choices fail
A February 2020 Linux Foundation Forums discussion includes one user report that the Phaser 3150 Foomatic/pxlmono driver worked in that person’s setup after two Xerox driver choices failed. This is an anecdotal lead, not a verified or universal Phaser 3250 solution; compatibility with your distribution, printer suffix, and connection has not been established.
- Record the current queue and driver configuration before experimenting.
- If your distribution offers the Phaser 3150 Foomatic/pxlmono choice, treat selecting it as a reversible test on a separate or easily restored queue.
- Print a basic test page and check whether output is correct, not merely whether the job leaves the queue.
- Restore the previous configuration if the test fails or produces incorrect output.
The forum report is not a comparative test of current driver options. Do not assume that a driver name appearing in a distribution means it is maintained or suitable for every Phaser 3250 setup.

When printing still fails
Collect the exact model suffix, Linux distribution and release, CUPS version, connection type and URI, queue state, and the relevant CUPS error. Those details make it possible to narrow the issue without treating an old manual example or one forum report as a general fix.

Keep consumables separate from software troubleshooting. A depleted toner cartridge can prevent satisfactory printing, but replacing toner will not resolve a stopped queue, a port lock, or an incompatible driver. Verify the precise 3250D or 3250DN variant, region, and cartridge SKU before buying a replacement.
