System76 Launches the First COSMIC Alpha: What It Aimed to Change

System76’s first COSMIC Alpha introduced an ambitious, customizable Linux desktop design. The project has since reached Epoch 1 with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS.

System76 announced the first COSMIC desktop environment Alpha on August 26, 2024, opening an early test of a more customizable Linux desktop—not announcing a finished replacement for the wider Linux desktop landscape. System76 warned that breaking bugs were expected and advised against production use. COSMIC has since moved beyond that stage: Epoch 1 shipped with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS on December 11, 2025.

What System76 wanted COSMIC to change

System76 described COSMIC as a new desktop environment for Pop!_OS and other Linux distributions. The project began as a replacement for the GNOME-based desktop used in earlier Pop!_OS releases, with the stated aim of making the experience more customizable and consistent. Its planned features show what that meant in practice:

  • Shareable themes and customizable panels for changing the desktop’s appearance and layout.
  • Flexible workspaces that could be arranged horizontally or vertically.
  • Integrated window tiling for organizing application windows on screen.
  • A suite of COSMIC applications, including Files, Settings, Terminal, Edit, and an App Store.

These were design goals and components of the project, not evidence that COSMIC had already displaced other Linux desktops. System76’s Alpha 2 announcement explains the project’s motivation and features at System76’s COSMIC Alpha 2 announcement.

What the first Alpha did—and did not—establish

The August 2024 release was an invitation to test unfinished software. System76 asked users to report bugs and cautioned that breaking issues could occur, making the Alpha unsuitable for production use. Its launch announcement also quoted positive first impressions from commentators including Linux Unplugged and Ars Technica, alongside reactions noting the project’s potential. Those comments were selected by System76; they were not a representative survey, adoption measure, or controlled performance comparison. The first Alpha announcement gives the release context and the reactions System76 chose to highlight.

  • Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
  • Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
  • Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.

COSMIC’s status now

COSMIC is no longer only an Alpha project. System76 released COSMIC Epoch 1 alongside Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS on December 11, 2025. In his release letter, System76 founder and CEO Carl Richell described COSMIC as modular and composable, and as software that others could adapt to create their own Linux experience. That statement describes System76’s goal; it does not establish independent adoption or market impact. Read Richell’s Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS release letter.

How to try COSMIC

System76 originally provided instructions for trying the Alpha on Pop!_OS and other distributions. Alpha-era announcements also listed Fedora, NixOS, Arch, openSUSE, Serpent OS, Redox OS, and CachyOS as testing routes at the time; that list should not be treated as a current compatibility guarantee. Check the relevant distribution’s current documentation before installing COSMIC outside Pop!_OS.

  1. For Pop!_OS: Visit the current Pop!_OS download page and select the image that matches your hardware. The page lists Intel/AMD graphics, newer NVIDIA graphics, ARM, and ARM with NVIDIA editions.
  2. Check the current requirements and notes: System76 recommends 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. Its page says Secure Boot must be disabled for installation, COSMIC is not currently optimized for touch devices, and certain display-toggle hotkeys are unsupported. These details can change; consult the live download page before proceeding.
  3. For another Linux distribution: Use that distribution’s current COSMIC installation guidance rather than assuming an Alpha-era testing route is still supported.

System76’s project description and release materials do not make ownership of a System76 computer a prerequisite for trying COSMIC. Confirm hardware compatibility and installation instructions for your chosen distribution before making changes to a working system.

What the launch says about Linux desktops

The first Alpha showed the direction System76 wanted to take: a desktop with more user-controlled layout and appearance, integrated tiling, and a coordinated set of native applications. Its significance at launch was as the beginning of that effort, not proof of a new Linux desktop standard. System76’s announcements do not provide a COSMIC adoption statistic or a comparative performance benchmark, so claims that it is faster, more popular, or has already redefined Linux desktops go beyond the evidence.
