XCOM: The Miniatures Game is a solo/co-op miniatures wargame with a player-versus-player option—not the separate XCOM: The Board Game. Modiphius describes a campaign that combines tactical alien-fighting missions with squad creation, base development, and technology research. The game is announced, but the available sources describe its contents and schedule rather than tested play; this is a preview, not a firsthand review.
What kind of XCOM game is it?
Modiphius presents the game as a tabletop adaptation of Firaxis’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown, drawing on material from the Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within era. It is built on Ivan Sorensen’s Five Parsecs From Home adventure-wargame system. Players command an elite XCOM team against an alien threat; the core rules also include a player-versus-player mode in which one player controls the aliens.

That makes it distinct from Fantasy Flight Games’ XCOM: The Board Game. The titles share a setting, but this one is a miniatures wargame with physical operatives and aliens, not that separate board game.

The publisher lists four linked activities: creating a squad, generating XCOM-style missions, fighting tactical miniatures encounters, and developing an XCOM base by expanding it and researching technologies. The campaign pitch is therefore broader than a sequence of isolated skirmishes: squad and organizational development are part of the stated rules package.

Modiphius also says the rules cover advanced technology upgrades, MEC Troopers, and EXALT. These are descriptions of intended game content, not evidence of how balanced, varied, or satisfying the campaign is in play.
What comes in the core rulebook?
Modiphius’s current product page describes a core rulebook with the rules for the Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within era and the planned miniatures range, two sheets of die-cut tokens, and a free PDF copy. The rulebook is sold separately, so it is the clearest starting point for someone who wants the rules before buying miniatures. The publisher also lists separate accessories such as acrylic tokens, reference cards, and official dice.

There is an unresolved page-count discrepancy: the current product page says 280 pages, while Modiphius’s June 18, 2026 announcement said 180 pages. Neither source explains the change, so confirm the specific edition before relying on either count. Modiphius’s current product page is the source for the latest product description.

These are announced releases and roadmap items, not confirmation that every set is currently on sale. Modiphius says themed encounter sets can be added as new aliens appear in the war, suggesting an expansion path alongside the core rules. Check the current listing for availability in your region before planning a collection.
When is it expected to release?
Modiphius’s current product page gives the latest schedule: resin preorders are listed to ship in November, HIPS preorders in January, and arrival at local game stores in early 2027; the retail roadmap is stated to start in February 2027. The page does not attach a year to the November and January shipping months, so those months should not be interpreted independently of the live listing. Its June 18, 2026 press release had instead described retail arrival in Fall/Winter 2026, and GamesRadar’s June reveal report likewise gave a late-2026 target. The current page is the later schedule, but future release dates can change.

Is this a review, and who should keep an eye on it?
No playtest results are established in the available coverage, so there is not enough evidence to judge balance, fun, learning curve, campaign pacing, or miniature quality. The strongest supported assessment is of the proposition: XCOM fans interested in solo or cooperative miniatures campaigns may find the combination of tactical missions and base progression worth watching, while players seeking a finished, independently assessed game should wait for hands-on coverage.
The hobby commitment is also different from buying a self-contained board game: the product is built around a miniatures range and terrain. The sources confirm the physical minis but do not establish assembly requirements, painting expectations, component quality, final pricing, or current retailer stock. The separately sold core rulebook offers a way to assess the rules path, but check the product page for the applicable edition and availability.
