What changes with the .xcproj format?
An Xcode project bundle can use either the existing .pbxproj property-list configuration or the new JSON-based .xcproj configuration. Apple’s migration guide describes the JSON file as smaller, hierarchical and self-describing. The format choice changes the project configuration file inside the .xcodeproj bundle; it does not mean replacing the bundle itself.

Apple’s stated rationale is that configuration changes in JSON are easier to verify in source-control comparison views because they correspond to actions in Xcode. It also says the format isolates configuration changes, which can make merge conflicts less likely. These are Apple’s qualitative claims, not a guarantee that a particular change will produce a cleaner diff or avoid a conflict.

- Open the project in Xcode 27 or later and select the project in the Project navigator.
- Open the File inspector.
- Under Project Document, choose JSON from the Project Format menu.
- Review the changes in your source-control view. The configuration changes from a
.pbxprojproperty list to an.xcprojJSON file inside the.xcodeprojbundle.
Apple’s migration guide says that to undo the conversion using source control, discard the individual file changes in the .xcodeproj folder: the removal of the .pbxproj file and the addition of the .xcproj file. Follow your team’s normal review and commit process before sharing a format change.

Which Xcode versions can open .xcproj projects?
Apple’s migration documentation says Xcode 27 and later support both project formats. The Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 release notes specifically state that projects using .xcproj also open in earlier versions of Xcode 27. The cited documentation does not establish compatibility with older major versions such as Xcode 26, so check the versions used by collaborators before changing a shared project.
For Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 specifically, Apple lists a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later as a requirement. That requirement applies to this beta build; it should not be assumed to describe other Xcode releases.

Should a team adopt the new format?
The JSON format is worth considering when a team wants a more inspectable project configuration and uses Xcode 27 or later across its contributors. Its potential benefits for diffs, merges and coding-agent edits come from Apple’s description; the cited sources publish no benchmarks or effect sizes. Teams relying on older Xcode major versions should confirm compatibility before converting, and teams using source control can review the file changes and revert the conversion if needed.
