Xbox Series X can play supported physical game discs when you choose a configuration with a disc drive; Xbox Series S cannot play discs at all. Both consoles support selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games, but compatibility depends on the title. On Series X, a compatible disc is used to verify ownership while the game downloads to the console, and you must keep the disc inserted to play.

Series S has no disc drive, and an external USB optical drive does not give it physical-game playback. If your game collection is on disc, Series X with a drive is the relevant choice.
Which older Xbox games work on Series X and Series S?
Both consoles support selected games from Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the original Xbox. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable, but there are exclusions, and supported features can differ by game. Neither console should be treated as compatible with every game from those generations.

Check the specific title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog before relying on it. Eligible digital games can be installed from your library. For a supported physical copy, only a Series X configuration with a disc drive can read the disc.
Original Xbox online features
For original Xbox games in the compatibility catalog, Xbox notes that original Xbox Live services—including online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces—are unavailable. Some supported offline multiplayer scenarios may still work; check the individual game rather than assuming its original online features carry over.

How disc-based backward-compatible games work
- Check the title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog and confirm that your Series X configuration has a disc drive.
- Insert the supported disc. The console uses it to verify ownership and downloads the game to console storage; it does not simply run the game from the disc.
- After installation, leave the disc in the drive whenever you play. The disc is still required for authentication.
Series S has no equivalent disc-installation route. A digital copy is needed to install and play a compatible game on that console.

In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox said Xbox Insiders could begin testing a feature on August 31 that lets players insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said the launch would begin with thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title would be available at launch. This is a dated Insider test and rollout announcement, not a guarantee of current access for every player or game. Check the Xbox Wire announcement and current eligibility for the title.

Where supported, Xbox said a claimed digital entitlement can provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The disc continues to work as before. The announcement does not change Series S hardware: it still cannot read a disc, so it cannot use a disc as the starting point for claiming an entitlement.

Which console fits a disc collection?
- Choose a disc-equipped Series X if you want to play supported physical games or use supported backward-compatible discs. Check the exact SKU before purchase.
- Choose Series S only if digital ownership suits your library; physical discs cannot be played on it.
- For either console, verify individual older titles in Xbox’s catalog, especially if you depend on a particular game or feature.
