For playing optimized Xbox Series X|S games from added storage, choose the Seagate Storage Expansion Card. A conventional USB external drive is useful for storing games and moving them to console storage when you want to play, but optimized games stored on USB need to be moved to the console’s internal drive or the expansion card first.

What the Expansion Card lets you do
The Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S fits the console’s dedicated expansion port and is the straightforward choice when you want additional storage that can run optimized Series X|S games. Xbox describes the card as adding external memory while maintaining the console’s internal SSD peak speed and performance. That is Xbox’s product claim, not an independent comparison of a particular card with a particular USB drive. Xbox’s product page identifies compatibility with Xbox Series X and Series S.

What a USB external drive is good for
A compatible USB 3.1 external HDD can hold games and help keep console SSD space available for the titles you play most often. Xbox Wire put it simply in its November 6, 2020 storage guide: “Keeping your external hard drive plugged in is a great way to store games, and it saves space on your console’s SSD for the games you play most.” Read the Xbox Wire guide.
#1 Best Overall
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED STORAGE FOR XBOX. Play effortlessly with full Xbox integration and enjoy gaming experiences that adhere fully to Microsoft’s quality standards.
- SPACE FOR MASSIVE GAMES. With up to 2TB[1] of storage, you have plenty of room to grow your game library and explore massive worlds.
- SUPERSPEED NVMe CORE. Revolutionize your gaming experience with reduced wait times, fast responses, and full immersion.
- OPTIMIZED FOR XBOX. Xbox Velocity Architecture unlocks the full potential of the WD_BLACK C50, allowing it to achieve blazing-fast performance and seamless, high-speed access to your favorite games.
- QUICK RESUME SUPPORT. The storage expansion card seamlessly integrates with your console's Quick Resume, enabling instant transition between multiple suspended games — so you can pick up exactly where you left off without delay.
For optimized Series X|S games, however, storage is not the same as being able to launch a game from that storage. Seagate’s support guidance says optimized games on an external USB drive must be moved to the console’s internal storage or the Seagate expansion card to play. In practical terms, USB can suit a library you keep on hand and transfer from, while the card suits games you want to run from added storage. Seagate’s USB-drive guidance.
Which option should you buy?
Choose the Expansion Card if you want direct play
- You want to install optimized Series X|S games on extra storage and play them from there.
- You prefer not to move a stored game back to console storage before playing.
- You want the expansion option Xbox positions as matching the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance.
Choose a USB external drive for storage and transfers
- You want more room to keep games without needing all of them ready to launch from added storage.
- You are comfortable moving optimized games to the internal drive or expansion card before playing.
- You have checked that the exact drive is compatible with the console and uses a supported connection.
There is no single better choice for every library: the key distinction is whether you need to play optimized games from the added storage or mainly want room to keep games and transfer them when needed. Compare current prices and capacities from retailers in your region rather than assuming the two options have a fixed price relationship.
Rank #2

- XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).
Why the two options differ
Xbox’s Series X specifications list 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed I/O throughput for the console. Those are console-level specifications, not benchmark results for a particular expansion card or USB drive. They should not be read as a measured head-to-head drive-speed comparison. Xbox Series X specifications
The Seagate Storage Expansion Card was released in November 2020, according to Xbox’s product page. The practical buying decision remains the workflow: the card is the direct-play expansion option for optimized games, while USB is useful for storing games and transferring them to supported console storage when needed.
