Microsoft lists a 1TB Carbon Black model with a UHD Blu-ray drive, a 1TB Robot White all-digital model, and a 2TB Galaxy Black model with a disc drive. Availability varies by market, so check the options sold where you live before buying.
Which Xbox Series X model should you choose?
Microsoft’s product page lists these Series X configurations. Prices and availability vary by retailer and market; the page does not establish a single price that applies everywhere.

| Configuration | Storage | Disc drive | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Black | 1TB SSD | Yes; 4K UHD Blu-ray | Choose it if you want to play compatible game discs or UHD Blu-ray movies. |
| Robot White | 1TB SSD | No | All-digital: games and other content must be available to you digitally. |
| Galaxy Black | 2TB SSD | Yes; 4K UHD Blu-ray | Offers more built-in storage while retaining a disc drive. |
These are the configurations listed on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page; confirm local model availability and details before purchasing. The page also showed an X25 limited edition as a preorder, so treat that listing as a market- and time-dependent offer rather than a standard configuration.

When a disc drive matters
A drive is useful if you own compatible Xbox game discs, want to buy games on disc, or want to play UHD Blu-ray movies. A disc-based backward-compatible game still needs its disc in the drive to play, even after installation. The all-digital Series X has no optical drive, so it cannot read game or movie discs.

When to choose all-digital
The Robot White model may suit you if you do not need physical media and are comfortable relying on digital purchases and downloads. Do not choose it on the assumption that a disc can later be used to install or verify a game: it has no drive.
How much storage do you need?
Microsoft lists 1TB and 2TB SSD options. The 2TB model starts with more listed capacity, while either 1TB model can be supplemented with external storage. Your practical needs depend on the games you keep installed; the product page does not specify how many games fit on either drive.
Storage Expansion Card
Microsoft describes its dedicated Storage Expansion Card as matching the internal SSD’s performance. It connects to the console’s dedicated expansion port. Seagate also publishes a datasheet for the Xbox Storage Expansion Card. This is the clearest option in the cited product information when you want additional storage described as matching internal-drive performance.

USB external hard drive
Microsoft also lists support for USB 3.1 external hard drives. That is general support, not a claim that every USB drive matches the internal SSD’s performance or can launch every optimized Series X|S game. The cited product information establishes the expansion card’s performance match, but does not set out a title-by-title rule for which games can run from a USB drive. Check the requirements for the specific drive and game before relying on it.
What display do you need to get the most from Series X?
Microsoft advertises native 4K gaming and capabilities up to 8K HDR and 120 frames per second. These are console capabilities, not promises for every game. Microsoft’s footnote says 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a supported display. A game may not offer that combination, and a display without the relevant support cannot show it.
The listed video connection is one HDMI 2.1 port. If a particular resolution or refresh rate is important to you, check that the game and display support it rather than relying only on the console’s headline maximums.

What is the difference between Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?
Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K gaming and offers configurations with a UHD Blu-ray drive; Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. Microsoft lists Series X SSD options of 1TB and 2TB, and Series S options of 512GB and 1TB.
| Decision point | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Disc ownership | Disc-drive configurations are listed, as well as one all-digital configuration. | Disc-free. |
| Resolution positioning | Native 4K gaming capability. | Designed for 1440p, with upscaling to 4K. |
| Listed SSD capacities | 1TB or 2TB. | 512GB or 1TB. |
| Price | Varies by retailer and market; check local listings. | Varies by retailer and market; check local listings. |
Those descriptions and capacity choices are from Microsoft’s console comparison and Series X page. If you own game discs, the disc-free Series S is not a substitute for a Series X configuration with an optical drive. If resolution, storage, or local price is decisive, compare the specific models currently sold in your market.
Can Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games work on Series X?
Microsoft says Series X supports thousands of games across Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the original Xbox. That is a broad platform statement, not a guarantee that every game from those generations is compatible. Check a specific title if you are buying the console for an older game.

For a compatible game on disc, insert the disc to start installation and keep the disc in the drive when playing. Digital ownership does not require inserting a disc. The disc-to-digital entitlement feature announced by Xbox in August 2026 was described as an Insider test for supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs, with testing announced to begin August 31 and thousands of titles planned; Xbox also said not every title would be available at launch. That announcement does not establish that the feature is generally available now or that a particular disc qualifies. Consult the Xbox Wire announcement and check current eligibility and rollout status before counting on it.
What comes in the box, and what accessories work?
Microsoft lists a controller, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and a power cord as included. You do not need to buy a separate HDMI cable just to make the basic console connection. Microsoft says most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories are compatible with Series X|S, but “most” is not “all”; check compatibility for a specific accessory before reusing or buying it.

What to check before you buy
- Decide whether you need an optical drive for game discs or UHD Blu-ray movies.
- Compare the locally available 1TB and 2TB configurations and their current prices.
- Check that your display and the games you play support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- If you need more storage, distinguish the dedicated Expansion Card’s stated performance match from general USB hard-drive support.
- Verify compatibility for a particular older game, controller, or accessory rather than assuming every item works.
- If considering the announced disc-to-digital feature, verify current rollout and title eligibility instead of treating the August 2026 test announcement as a general release.
For current local console listings, Microsoft’s store is at Microsoft Store: Xbox consoles, games, controllers and gear; retailer stock and pricing may differ by market.
