Start at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details: it shows what the connected screen reports, rather than what its marketing says it can do.
Check 4K TV details before changing settings
On the Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. Xbox recommends this screen for checking a connected TV’s 4K and HDR capabilities. Treat it as your first diagnostic: if a feature you expect is missing, the TV, the selected HDMI input, or something in the connection path may not be reporting support.

The result is specific to the display and connection currently in use. A television’s advertised capabilities do not necessarily apply to every HDMI input, and a receiver or other device between the console and screen can also affect which options are reported.
Choose resolution and refresh rate together
In Settings > General > TV & Display Options, choose the highest resolution and refresh-rate combination the console reports as supported. Xbox Series X|S support refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but that is a platform capability ceiling, not a guarantee that every screen can run every combination. In particular, a 4K television does not automatically support 4K at 120 Hz.

Use the reported options as the practical limit for this setup. If 120 Hz matters to you, verify that the exact TV or monitor model and the HDMI input in use support it at your chosen resolution.
Enable VRR and ALLM when the screen supports them
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are among the Xbox Series X|S gaming features identified in Xbox’s TV-readiness guide. Enable them when the console offers them and your display supports them through the selected input and connection. Availability can vary by screen and setup; neither feature is a universal switch that every display can use.

Match HDR to your particular TV
HDR support and setup are display-dependent. Use the Xbox’s available HDR calibration flow, and follow the instructions for your exact TV model when enabling HDR in its menus. Dolby Vision availability and menu steps can also depend on the screen. Xbox Support lists separate topics for HDR TV settings and Dolby Vision, but its pages could not be read beyond JavaScript shells for this article, so exact current menu paths are not established here. Do not assume a single HDR or Dolby Vision recipe will suit every television.

Xbox says its most advanced display features require an HDMI 2.1 connection. That means the connection path matters: the console, cable, TV input and any device between them must work together. Xbox Series X|S setup guidance also notes that TV inputs can differ in their supported capabilities.

- Check the selected TV input. Consult the TV’s model-specific documentation to confirm which HDMI inputs support the feature you want.
- Connect the console directly to the TV temporarily. If you are using a receiver or another intermediary, bypass it to see whether the console reports different capabilities.
- Recheck 4K TV details. Return to Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details after changing the input or connection.
- Consider a replacement cable only if needed. The cable included with the console may already be suitable. If replacing a cable—for example, because you need a different length—check the full connection path first. A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable cannot add support that the TV or input lacks.
