Short answer: Choose the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition if your preferred games, existing purchases, and friends are on PlayStation. Choose the Xbox Series S if you specifically want the Xbox ecosystem, its subscription options, or a meaningful current-price advantage for the exact storage configuration you need. The Series S is not an equal-spec alternative to the PS5: it is Xbox’s lower-spec, all-digital model. Check the live price, model capacity, display, and game library before deciding.
The decision in one minute
Both consoles remove the disc drive and expect you to buy or download games digitally, but they target different buyers. Microsoft positions Xbox Series S for 1440p gaming with 4K upscaling, while Sony’s PlayStation 5 Digital Edition belongs to the higher-performance PS5 family. The available evidence does not provide a controlled, game-by-game benchmark, so it would be misleading to assign a precise percentage advantage to either machine. In practice, your platform library and the screen you use matter at least as much as a specification sheet.

- Buy the PS5 Digital Edition when your owned PS4 games, desired PlayStation releases, or friends are tied to PlayStation, or when you want the PS5 family’s performance position and 825 GB configuration.
- Buy the Series S when your games and social circle are on Xbox, you value Xbox’s subscription ecosystem, or the exact Series S configuration is substantially better priced at checkout.
- Pause before either purchase if you own discs, because neither digital-only console can use a disc you already have. Confirm that every important title is available digitally in your region and on your account.
What is being compared?
Xbox Series S
Series S is Microsoft’s compact, disc-free Xbox console and the lower-spec member of the Series X|S generation. Microsoft describes it as designed for 1440p gaming with the ability to upscale to 4K. The product page also advertises frame rates of up to 120 frames per second, but only in games and display setups that support that mode. Those are design and feature claims, not results from a standardized comparison test. Resolution, visual settings, and frame rate can vary from one title to another.
Microsoft lists two storage configurations: a 512 GB model and a 1 TB model. The capacity printed on the box is not the amount left for games after the operating system and reserved space are accounted for. Confirm the exact capacity, color, bundle, and seller on the listing you are about to buy.

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition
The PS5 Digital Edition is Sony’s disc-free version of the PlayStation 5. The cited US direct listing names an 825 GB capacity. Sony’s PS5 product information covers PS4 backward compatibility and Game Boost for selected PS4 titles. The PS5 family has had multiple model configurations, and Sony notes that specifications can change, so read the live listing rather than assuming every Digital Edition has identical physical dimensions or capacity.
These are not two identically positioned products. Series S trades some of the Series generation’s hardware capability for a lower tier within Xbox; the PS5 Digital Edition is the digital variant of Sony’s main PS5 platform. A fair decision therefore asks which platform and model fit you, not simply which console has the larger number in one specification.
Performance and the display you own
| Question | Xbox Series S | PS5 Digital Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor positioning | Designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. | PS5-family digital console; the cited product information establishes PS5 features but does not provide a head-to-head measurement against Series S. |
| High-frame-rate claim | Up to 120 FPS in supported games and displays. | No comparable figure was established in the cited material for a direct comparison. |
| What you should expect | Output depends on the game, its graphics modes, and your screen. | Output depends on the game, its graphics modes, and your screen; do not infer a universal result from the console family name. |
If you use a 1080p television
Either console can feed a 1080p display. The Series S’s 1440p design target will be scaled by the console or television, and a PS5 game will also render according to its own supported modes. At this resolution, library, controller preference, and price are usually more important than chasing a higher output number. Check whether the specific games you play offer a performance mode before assuming a particular frame rate.

If you use a 1440p monitor
This is the display class that most directly matches Microsoft’s Series S positioning. The console is designed around 1440p output, but a title can use a different resolution or dynamic scaling. Confirm that your monitor accepts the console’s output and supports the refresh rate you want. The PS5 Digital Edition can also be used with a 1440p-capable monitor, but the cited sources do not establish a measured advantage or disadvantage in that setup.
If you use a 4K television
Series S can upscale to 4K, which is not the same as rendering every game natively at 4K. Microsoft’s wording is a capability statement, not a promise that all games will use 4K or maintain a particular frame rate. A PS5 Digital Edition is the more natural fit for a buyer prioritizing the PS5 platform on a 4K screen, but you should still consult the modes listed for the particular games you intend to play. Do not buy either console on the assumption that every title has one fixed resolution.
If 120 Hz matters to you
Series S advertises up to 120 FPS only where the game and display support it. You need a compatible high-refresh display and the correct cable and settings, and the game must expose that mode. A 120 Hz television by itself does not make every game run at 120 FPS. The research used here does not establish a directly comparable PS5 Digital Edition frame-rate result, so treat any exact cross-console percentage or universal 120 FPS claim as unverified.
Storage: 512 GB, 1 TB, or 825 GB?
| Console configuration | Advertised capacity | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | Microsoft-listed capacity; usable free space is lower after system reservations. |
| Xbox Series S | 1 TB | Microsoft-listed capacity; verify the exact SKU and current price before purchase. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825 GB | Capacity named in the cited US direct listing; PS5 configurations can change, and usable space is lower than the advertised figure. |
Digital games can be large, and both consoles reserve part of their internal drive for system software. The capacity comparison above is therefore a buying guide, not a promise of a particular number of installable games. A 1 TB Series S gives you more advertised space than the 512 GB version, while the cited PS5 listing sits between those two figures. Compare the exact model rather than referring generally to Series S or PS5 Digital.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card connects through the dedicated expansion port. Microsoft says the card provides additional game storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. That makes it a straightforward option if your Series S library outgrows the built-in drive. It is optional, not a requirement on day one. Check current capacity, availability, price, and compatibility on the live listing before choosing one.

PS5 expansion
The material available for this comparison does not verify current PS5 M.2 SSD requirements or recommend a particular drive. Do not buy a random internal SSD on the assumption that it will work. Use Sony’s current support documentation and the exact console model number to check dimensions, interface, heatsink, and performance requirements before spending money on expansion.
A practical storage test
- List the games you expect to keep installed at the same time.
- Identify which are current-generation downloads and estimate their sizes from the current store listings.
- Leave headroom for updates and temporary installation space instead of filling the drive completely.
- Compare the console price plus any expansion you realistically expect to buy, not just the shelf price of the base unit.
Game libraries and backward compatibility
Xbox library
Microsoft says Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. Microsoft describes backward compatibility as a free feature, but that does not mean every historical title is available. Availability can depend on the specific game, publisher rights, region, and whether you own a digital license. Because Series S has no disc drive, a backward-compatible game that you own only on disc cannot be inserted and played on it.
Before buying, sign in to the account you will use on the console and make a shortlist of must-play titles. Check each title’s current store page and edition. A game may have several versions, downloadable content may not transfer in the way you expect, and a title available on one platform may be absent or sold separately on the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlayStation library
Sony’s PS5 information states that PS5 supports the PS4 library and offers Game Boost for selected PS4 games. Game Boost is selective, not a guarantee that every PS4 title receives the same enhancement. As with Xbox, verify your exact owned games, region, account, and edition. A PS4 disc collection does not solve the problem for a disc-free PS5 Digital Edition.
Cross-generation and cross-platform checks
Do not assume that a game’s name guarantees the same edition, save transfer, or upgrade path on both systems. Check whether the publisher lists a native Series S|X or PS5 version, whether your existing purchase includes that version, and whether online progress follows your account. If your friends play on one platform, verify cross-play support for the particular game instead of assuming that cross-play is universal.
Online play and subscription costs
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility page says online console multiplayer requires a Game Pass subscription, sold separately. Sony’s US direct listing says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer. These are general platform rules as described on the cited pages; tiers, prices, free-to-play exceptions, trial terms, and catalog contents can change. Check the current terms in your country before treating a subscription as part of the console’s total cost.
| Cost question | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Online multiplayer on Xbox | Game Pass is required for online console multiplayer according to Microsoft’s cited page. | Current tier, price, eligible games, and any exceptions in your region. |
| Online multiplayer on PlayStation | Paid PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer according to Sony’s cited US listing. | Current tier, price, eligible games, and any exceptions in your region. |
| Included game catalog | Catalog size and contents were not established for a current, date-specific comparison. | Whether the games you actually want are included now and how long they remain available. |
Make a two-year cost worksheet: console, subscription months, games not included in the catalog, storage expansion, and any controller or headset you genuinely need. A subscription can be valuable for one buyer and poor value for another depending on how many included games they would actually play. Avoid choosing from an old article that quotes an expired price or catalog.
Price and value: why the cheaper-console assumption is unsafe
Prices are volatile and vary by country, retailer, bundle, and storage size. A July 2026 TechRadar report said Microsoft would raise US console prices effective August 1, 2026, including a $100 increase for 512 GB models and a $150 increase for 1 TB models. Those are US-market reported changes, not a universal global price and not proof of what a particular retailer charges today. The cited Sony material did not establish a current US direct-store price for the PS5 Digital Edition.

- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
- Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
- Xbox One games and accessories work together
For that reason, do not describe Series S as the cheaper option without checking live listings on the day you buy. Compare like with like: console capacity, included controller, bundled game, warranty, seller, shipping, taxes, and return policy. A discounted 512 GB model may look attractive until you add an expansion card; a bundled PS5 may change the value calculation even when its list price is higher.
| Price-check item | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Exact storage SKU | Series S is sold in 512 GB and 1 TB forms; the difference affects both capacity and price. |
| Region and currency | The reported August 1 changes apply to the US market and cannot be transferred automatically to another country. |
| Bundle contents | A game or accessory can make two apparently different prices less comparable. |
| Retailer and stock | Promotions, marketplace sellers, shipping, taxes, and warranty terms can alter checkout cost. |
| Future storage | Include an expansion card or approved storage only if your library makes it likely. |
Choose the PS5 Digital Edition when…
Your library is already on PlayStation
Existing PS4 purchases, saves, trophies, and friends reduce friction when you stay within the PlayStation ecosystem. Confirm each important title and any upgrade entitlement before assuming it carries over. The PS5 Digital Edition is especially logical when you are replacing a PlayStation console and do not need a disc drive.
You want the PS5 platform rather than an Xbox alternative
Platform-specific releases, controller preferences, social groups, and account history are legitimate reasons to choose PS5. A specification table cannot tell you which community or storefront you will use every week. If the games you care about are on PlayStation, a nominal storage or price difference should not outweigh that library fit.

The live price gap is small
Because Series S pricing changed in the US and the PS5 listing price is not fixed by the cited material, check both carts. If the final totals are close, the PS5 Digital Edition’s position in the PS5 family may make more sense for a buyer who values that platform and does not need discs.

Your games and friends are on Xbox
Series S gives you access to the Xbox platform, Xbox One games, and selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles through Microsoft’s backward-compatibility system. Verify the exact games you own and whether they are digital. For a household already using Xbox accounts, the continuity can matter more than a raw hardware comparison.
You will use Xbox’s subscription ecosystem
If the current Game Pass options include the games you intend to play and the subscription cost fits your budget, Series S can be a sensible entry point. Do not rely on a catalog count from an old review; check the current tier, regional price, and whether your must-play titles are included when you subscribe.
You have a 1080p or 1440p display and modest storage needs
Series S’s stated 1440p design target aligns naturally with those screens. The 512 GB model can suit a player who rotates a small set of games and manages installs actively. If you keep a large library installed, price the 1 TB model or the official expansion card before choosing the smaller configuration.
The exact configuration is meaningfully cheaper
Only a live checkout comparison can establish this. Include the subscription, storage plan, taxes, delivery, and bundle contents. A dated US price report is useful context, but it is not a current quote.

A purchase checklist that avoids the common mistakes
- Write down your must-play games. Mark the platform, edition, region, and whether each purchase is digital or disc-based.
- Check your friends’ platform. Verify cross-play for the specific multiplayer games you play rather than assuming it exists.
- Measure your display. Note resolution, refresh rate, available HDMI inputs, and whether the screen accepts the console output you want.
- Pick the exact storage SKU. Compare Series S 512 GB, Series S 1 TB, and the capacity shown on the current PS5 Digital Edition listing.
- Calculate two-year ownership cost. Add online subscriptions, games outside the catalog, storage expansion, taxes, delivery, and any necessary accessories.
- Check disc dependence. Neither digital edition can use your existing game discs, movie discs, or disc-only purchases.
- Verify the seller and model number. Confirm warranty, return period, region, included controller, bundle, and stock status.
- Recheck on purchase day. Prices and bundles change; the August 1, 2026 US Xbox increases show why an undated comparison can become wrong.
Migration and setup plan
Before you order
Export or verify cloud saves on your current platform, record the email address and password for the account you will use, and list any paid add-ons. Screenshots of your digital library and subscriptions can help you identify forgotten purchases. If a title is essential, check its current store page from the country where the new console will be used.
On arrival
- Confirm the model, storage capacity, region, included controller, and seal before disposing of packaging.
- Update the console over a reliable connection and sign in with the intended account.
- Install one or two priority games first, then test multiplayer access before downloading your entire library.
- Set the display resolution and refresh rate to values your television or monitor explicitly supports.
- Review storage after system updates and reserve free space for patches.
- If you bought expansion storage, follow the manufacturer’s current installation and formatting instructions; do not assume an unverified drive is compatible.
If you are changing platforms
Plan for purchases that do not transfer between Xbox and PlayStation storefronts. Some publishers support cross-progression, but it is not a platform-wide guarantee. Check account linking, save-transfer rules, downloadable content, and multiplayer requirements for each important game before selling the old console.
Pitfalls and how to correct them
Assuming every Series S game is 4K or 120 FPS
Why it happens: product pages mention 4K upscaling and up to 120 FPS. Correction: read the game’s supported modes and confirm the display; treat those figures as conditional capabilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Comparing advertised storage as if it were free space
Why it happens: box capacities are easy to compare. Correction: expect less usable space after system reservations and include expansion in your budget if you keep many large games installed.
Calling Series S universally cheaper
Why it happens: older price comparisons persist online. Correction: check current regional listings and remember the reported US increases effective August 1, 2026.
Buying a digital console for a disc library
Why it happens: backward compatibility is confused with disc support. Correction: inventory whether each title is attached to a digital account or exists only on a disc. A disc-only purchase cannot be inserted into a digital-only console.
Assuming backward compatibility is complete
Why it happens: platform labels sound broader than the actual catalog. Correction: Microsoft specifies selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles, and Sony specifies PS4 support with Game Boost for selected games. Verify your exact title.

Why it happens: generic M.2 drives look interchangeable. Correction: consult Sony’s current support requirements for your model before purchasing an internal expansion drive.
Final decision
There is no universal winner. The PS5 Digital Edition is the safer recommendation for a reader whose preferred games and existing library point to PlayStation, especially when the current price difference is modest. Series S is the better fit for an Xbox household, a buyer who will use the Xbox subscription ecosystem, or someone who finds a substantial live-price advantage in the right 512 GB or 1 TB configuration. Make the choice only after checking the exact model, storage, display, digital library, online-subscription terms, region, and checkout price.
