If Xbox Play Anywhere is not working, first confirm the game is a participating digital title, then check that you are signed into the Microsoft account that has access to it and that the game is listed in the right library. Next check Windows and device compatibility, close the game on other devices, and take care not to overwrite a newer local save while investigating a sync problem.
1. Confirm the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere
Play Anywhere applies only to participating digital games. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing, or check the official Xbox Play Anywhere title list. A disc purchase does not provide Play Anywhere entitlement. If the title is not eligible, its Xbox purchase will not automatically unlock the PC version through this program.

Eligibility is specific to the title and the entitlement involved. Microsoft’s developer overview describes cross-entitlement and cross-progression for supported games, but that does not mean every edition, storefront purchase, or unrelated version of a game shares ownership or saves.
2. Check the Microsoft account and the game library
For Play Anywhere access, sign in on each device with the Xbox/Microsoft account associated with the game. If you are asking, “Am I signed into the right Microsoft account?”, compare the account used to acquire or access the title with the one currently active in the Xbox app or console profile.

- Windows PC: Open the Xbox app and check My Library.
- Still missing on PC: Open Microsoft Store > Library and check owned content there.
These are separate places to verify visibility; a missing listing does not by itself establish why sign-in or entitlement failed.
3. If the game bought on Xbox is not showing up on PC
Before buying the game again or reinstalling it, check whether the title is Play Anywhere, the Windows PC meets the publisher’s minimum requirements, and the Windows version is supported. Microsoft notes that some apps and games do not work on every Windows version. Its device installation troubleshooting guidance also identifies Microsoft account device limits: the Microsoft Store device cap is ten devices. Treat that cap as a Store installation diagnostic, not as a universal explanation for Xbox sign-in or save-sync problems.

If the Store reports a device limit, review devices on your Microsoft account and remove an old device if appropriate, following Microsoft’s linked guidance. If the title is absent from both the Xbox app’s My Library and Microsoft Store Library, recheck the account and eligibility before assuming that a reinstall will fix ownership visibility.
4. Close the game on the other device
The same Play Anywhere game cannot be signed into simultaneously on an Xbox console, Windows PC, and supported Windows handheld. If it is open on another device, exit the game there before trying to launch or sign in on the device you want to use. Xbox’s FAQ and Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules both specify one device at a time for a Play Anywhere game.

5. Xbox cloud save not syncing between Xbox and PC
For eligible Play Anywhere titles, Xbox says progress is saved with Xbox so you can resume on another supported device. That expected feature depends on the game’s implementation: Microsoft’s developer guidance describes cloud game saves and cross-progression using a single TitleID. It should not be assumed that an unrelated edition, storefront copy, or game-specific save system will share progress.
If progress is missing or a save-conflict prompt appears, protect the device you believe has the newest progress. Do not launch the game on another device in a way that could overwrite that save, and do not clear data, reset, or reinstall as a presumed safe fix. Microsoft’s XR-052 save-roaming policy describes a failure case in which a cloud save is not recognized on first launch and can then be overwritten from another device. The consulted player-facing guidance does not give a universal conflict-recovery sequence, so use the specific game’s support instructions before taking a destructive step.
