If an Xbox or Microsoft Store game does not show up where you expect in File Explorer, the first step is to confirm whether Windows and the Microsoft Store recognize it as an installed app. Only after that does a file-location search make sense. Microsoft’s support documentation does not describe one universal folder where every Store or Xbox game’s files appear, so there is no single path to open. The steps below separate the three situations that often get lumped together: the app is missing from Windows search, the title is missing from your Store Library, or the app works but its files are not easy to browse.
Confirm that Windows sees the game as an app
Start here because it takes less than a minute and rules out the most common confusion. Windows Search finds installed apps by name, and Microsoft’s guidance on finding files and apps in Windows lists Start and the taskbar search as the way to do this. Microsoft’s file and app search guidance describes the method.

- Select the Start button or the search box on the taskbar.
- Type the exact game title, for example the name shown on its Store page.
- If the game appears, open it from the results. The app is installed and registered with Windows, and the remaining question is only where its files live.
- If nothing appears, go to the Store Library check below before assuming the game is absent.
Check the Microsoft Store Library for ownership and install state
The Library tells you whether the account you are signed into has the game and whether it is already on this PC. Microsoft’s instructions for getting apps and games from the Store say the Library separates items that still need to be downloaded from those already downloaded or installed, and a Download icon marks an item that has not been downloaded on the device. The Store Library instructions cover this distinction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Select Library.
- Confirm that the Microsoft account at the top matches the account used to buy or claim the game. A game owned by a different account will not appear in your Library.
- Find the title. If it shows a Download icon, the game is owned but not installed on this PC. If it is listed as installed or offers to launch, reopen the Start search step above.
A game can appear in the Library and still be absent from Explorer searches, and the reverse is also possible. The Library reflects Store state and the Start search reflects Windows app registration; neither one is a file browser.

Search for the files only when you actually need them
File Explorer can search a selected folder, a drive, or This PC. Searching a narrower location is faster, so start with the drive where you believe the game was installed. A full This PC search is the broadest option, and Microsoft notes that it can take noticeably longer. Microsoft’s file search guidance describes these search scopes.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC, or select the specific drive in the left pane.
- Click the search box at the top right of the window.
- Type the game title or a file name you already know from the game’s folder, then wait for results.
- If the search returns nothing, widen the search to This PC once, then allow it to finish before drawing a conclusion.
An Explorer search that finds no obvious game folder does not prove that the game is missing. Some Store apps are registered with Windows without presenting ordinary, browsable folders, so the Start search and the Library check remain the reliable indicators of installation.

If the game is missing from the Library or will not install
When the title does not appear in the Library, or the Store shows it but will not install, Microsoft’s support guidance on apps you cannot find or install lists the common causes. Work through them in this order, since the account and region checks take the least effort.

- Region availability: some apps and games are not offered in every country, so a listing may be absent or greyed out where you live.
- Family settings: if the PC is used by a child account, the Store may hide or block certain titles until a family organiser approves them.
- Removal from the Store: a publisher may have withdrawn the title, which removes it from the Store and can make it unavailable for reinstallation.
- Device compatibility: the title may not support your version of Windows or your hardware.
- Pending restart: after Windows updates, a restart is sometimes needed before a new installation or Library change appears.
Microsoft’s list is the authoritative set of reasons to check, and it is more useful than guessing at a cause. Its guidance on Store unavailability is at Microsoft’s page on apps you can’t find or install.

If the game is installed but not working correctly
If the game appears in the Start search and launches inconsistently, the issue is with the app rather than with finding it. Microsoft’s general guidance on problems with Store apps recommends a sequence of recovery steps, starting with checking for updates and then using repair or reset where the app offers them. Reinstalling from the Store Library is the last step. Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting page sets out these options.
- Open Microsoft Store and check for app updates for the game.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, find the game, select the three-dot menu if shown, and choose Advanced options if the app offers repair or reset.
- Run the repair first. If it does not help, use reset, which clears the app’s local data and may require you to sign in again.
- If the problem remains, uninstall the game and reinstall it from the Store Library, following the Download step above.
Repair and reset availability varies by app. If the Advanced options entry is absent, the publisher has not enabled those controls, and reinstalling through the Library is the supported route.

Avoid manual changes to protected game folders
Some guides suggest taking ownership of a game folder, changing its permissions, or moving files by hand to make them visible. Microsoft’s documentation on app permissions describes how Windows governs file-system and install-folder access for apps, but it does not instruct users to take ownership of a Store game directory or move its package files manually. Microsoft’s app permissions page is the reference for what the system controls. Changes to those permissions can break an app’s updates, licensing checks, or uninstall, and they are not a supported fix for visibility. Unless the specific game’s publisher documents a procedure for its files, stay with the Start, Library, and recovery steps above.
Diagnose which of the three situations you are in
The phrase “not visible” can describe three different problems. Each has a different next check, so match your symptom to the row that fits.

| What you see | What it likely means | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No result in Start or taskbar search | The app is not registered as installed on this Windows account | Check Store Library for a Download icon, then reinstall if the title is owned |
| Game absent from Store Library | Wrong account, region, family restriction, removal, or compatibility issue | Verify account, then the blocker list in the Library section |
| App appears in Start but its folder is hard to find in Explorer | The game is installed, but its files are not presented as ordinary browsable folders | Confirm launch works; use a narrow Explorer search only if you need files for a specific reason |
| App installed but crashes or will not open | An app-level fault rather than a visibility issue | Update, then repair or reset, then reinstall from the Library |
Details that narrow down a stubborn case
If none of these checks resolves the problem, the cause depends on details the first steps do not reveal. Note the exact game title, your Windows version and build, the Xbox app version if you use it, the drive where you installed the game, and any error message or code. Those details determine whether the issue lies in account and availability, in the Windows install record, or in the game’s own package, and each of those points to a different fix.
