A September 2026 report says hardware leaker KeplerL2 estimated 56 TFLOPS for Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, and 40 TFLOPS for Sony’s PS6. Neither figure is an official specification, and the 40% arithmetic difference between them does not establish a 40% advantage in games.
What does the Xbox Helix leak say?
VideoCardz reported on September 23, 2026, that KeplerL2 had attributed GPU compute estimates of 56 TFLOPS to the next Xbox and 40 TFLOPS to the PS6. The report traces the claims to a NeoGAF discussion and labels the story a rumor. It also relays the claim that both chips had taped out; that, too, is an unverified statement attributed to the leaker, not confirmation from Microsoft, Sony, or AMD.

Here is what the reported figures mean, and how firmly each is established:

|---|---|---|
| 56 TFLOPS | KeplerL2, as reported by VideoCardz on September 23, 2026; unconfirmed estimate. | Alleged Helix GPU compute. It is not an official Microsoft specification or a game benchmark. |
| 40 TFLOPS | KeplerL2, as reported by VideoCardz on September 23, 2026; unconfirmed estimate. | Alleged PS6 GPU compute. It is not an official Sony specification or a game benchmark. |
| 16 TFLOPS | Calculated by subtracting the two reported estimates. | The numerical gap between the estimates, if they are accurate and comparable. |
| 40% | Calculated from the reported estimates: 56 is 40% greater than 40. | A relative difference in the rumored numbers, not a measured in-game performance advantage. |
TFLOPS means tera floating-point operations per second, a measure of theoretical compute throughput. A figure can help describe one aspect of a GPU, but it does not by itself tell you how a console will perform in real games.

Does 56 TFLOPS mean Xbox will be 40% faster than PS6?
No. Even if both estimates prove accurate and were calculated using a comparable method, the arithmetic only says the reported Helix figure is 40% higher than the reported PS6 figure. It does not predict frame rates, resolution, image quality, or loading times.
Game performance also depends on GPU architecture and specialized hardware, the CPU, memory bandwidth and allocation, power and thermal limits, software features, and how developers use the hardware. The VideoCardz report makes the same core distinction: “What I wanted to point out is that TFLOPS measure raw compute performance, so this does not mean Xbox will be 40% faster in games.” That is the outlet’s explanation, not a statement from a console maker.

A meaningful comparison would require confirmed hardware details and, ultimately, evidence from shipping games. Useful evidence would include game-specific frame rates and image quality, alongside details such as ray-tracing and other feature hardware, memory, upscaling, and developer optimization. None of those comparisons can be settled by the two rumored compute figures alone.
Have Microsoft or Sony confirmed these specs?
Microsoft has announced Project Helix as a next-generation Xbox project and confirmed a custom AMD SoC partnership, according to Tom’s Hardware’s March 11, 2026 coverage. That coverage also describes compatibility with console and PC games and discusses next-generation graphics features. It does not confirm a 56 TFLOPS specification.

The available reporting does not establish Sony’s confirmation of a 40 TFLOPS PS6 figure. Nor does it confirm the alleged tape-out claim. Treat the project announcement as evidence that Helix is real—not as validation of the leaked numbers.
How do the rumors compare with current-generation figures?
For historical context only, the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2023 provisional findings listed these figures for current-generation consoles:
Rank #4
- Experience the next generation in entertainment with the Microsoft Xbox One games console
- Powerful hardware provides stunning, true-to-life graphics
- Play with millions of other gamers across the web with Xbox Live
- Jump seamlessly between your favourite game, TV show or movie
- Includes a Wireless Controller
| Console | GPU figure in the CMA comparison | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 12 TFLOPS | UK Competition and Markets Authority, 2023 provisional findings |
| PlayStation 5 | 10.3 TFLOPS | UK Competition and Markets Authority, 2023 provisional findings |
Those figures describe the existing consoles and do not verify Helix or PS6 hardware. They are useful only as context for the kind of GPU-compute comparison people make; they cannot establish how the next generation will perform.

What is still unknown?
The reported estimates are not a substitute for final product specifications. The available coverage does not establish either console’s final GPU design, memory configuration for Helix, release timing, price, or performance in shipping games. It also does not independently establish that the alleged tape-out happened as described.
